The PA3 series of amplifiers are factory-configured for many different applications. This P48C1 configuration is designed to provide impedance conversion and gain, making passive piezo hydrophones compatible with professional-grade microphone preamplifiers. These include preamps that are built into digital recorders, PA systems, mixing consoles, and high-quality computer sound interfaces. PA3-P48C1 For interfacing piezo hydrophones to balanced phantom-powered microphone preamps Hydrophone Buffer / Preamp PA3 Aquarian Audio QC by: SN#: Thank you for your purchase of the PA3 Buffer / Preamp. The P48C1 configuration is a charge-mode amplifier. It works differently than most amplifier designs in the fact that it is sensitive to charge differences in capacitive sensors rather than voltage signals. The advantage is that long cables can be used between the hydrophone and this amplifier without affecting sensitivity. It can also be used with other piezo and capacitive sensors, including contact mics, geophones, accelerometers, pyroelectric sensors and some types of guitar pickups and microphones. This low-distortion, high-gain amplifier will help you maximize dynamic range and minimize noise while monitoring lowamplitude sounds, making the most of your modern digital recording media or sound analysis software. The PA3's low-impedance balanced output will also be useful for driving long cables between it and your recording device or PA system. The PA3 is built for the elements in a marine environment, using highquality gold-plated connectors, a conformal-coated circuit board, stainless steel hardware, and housing materials of tough anodized aluminum and urethane plastics and rubbers. It is not intended to be submersible. www.aquarianaudio.com/warranty.html This part is warranted for one year, subject to the general warranty terms and conditions noted on our website: Warranty and service: The PA3-P48C1 is factory-configured for your hydrophone or to your specifications. There are no user adjustments. Simply connect the hydrophone to the amplifier and the amplifier to the mic input of your audio device. 48-volt phantom power is required and may need to be switched on within the menu settings of your audio device. Phantom power is an option in most professional-grade audio devices with microphone inputs. 48 volts (IEC P48) is the original standard by which most manufacturers comply, but the need for lower power consumption in battery-powered devices, along with simplification of design, led to other standards. This amplifier is only guaranteed to work with IEC P48 power. This amplifier is intended to be splash-resistant, but is not waterproof. Care should be taken to keep all connectors and electrical components as dry as possible, especially when working in corrosive environments such as seawater or chlorinated water. Technical: In a charge-mode amplifier, gain is set by the ratio of the amplifier's input capacitance to the total of the hydrophone's capacitance, including cable. Gain is also doubled in the P48C1 configuration by the complimentary balanced output. To calculate the gain of this amplifier using your transducer, measure or reference your transducer's capacitance (C TR) in nano-Farads and use the following equation: Open-circuit gain = 2(CTR/2.5) THD: THD+N: Max output: Max input: Current consumption: Input: Output: Z out: Physical: <1> <2> <3> RS RPWR(2) RIN RTR Ext. 9~15V VCC 10V RG XLR M COUT(2) 1 VSS Open-circuit Gain = 2(CTR/CIN) Balanced complimentary output. If configured for single-ended output, total open-circuit gain is calculated by (CTR/CIN)(RG/2000) Fc High-Pass = 1/(2 pi CIN RIN) Also limited by COUT and any coupling capacitors in your signal chain Fc Low-Pass = 1/(2 pi CTR RS) Specifications: Gain: Noise: Response: CIN CTR The PA3-[P48C1] is configured for [P48] phantom power, [C] charge mode, and [1] for general audio applications with our H1 hydrophones, which have a nominal 25nF capacitance. Simplified Block Diagram Hydrophone The PA3 family of preamplifier modules is designed to be highly versatile, offering factory configurations for gain, bandwidth, power supply, output and either charge or voltage mode input. These configurations are done at the board level with selection of key electronic components. The PA3 module has no user-switchable configurations. Also referred to as 1/4” mono. Can be BNC or user-specified. Full-size 3-pin, Pin 2 positive with positive input. Connector can be user-specified. For standard hydrophone cable lengths and auditory frequencies RTR can be considered negligible. For very long cable lengths or extended bandwidth, cable capacitance should be added to CTR and RTR (comprised of cable DC resistance and sensor impedance) should be added to RS. Also limited by RF suppression components in the amplifier, as well as any in the remainder of your signal chain.
