Executive Summary Aras Corporation was founded in March 2000 to create practical, flexible and supportable next-generation enterprise PLM enterprise software to help companies manage their product information and lifecycle processes. Aras’ drive to develop such a solution was born out of the fact that historically, the majority of PLM projects undertaken by companies of all sizes, ultimately fail to deliver on the promised vision of a comprehensive, integrated PLM process. PLM state of the art for the past 2 decades has barely risen above simple document management or CAD file management, because of the inherent limitations in the architecture of the conventional PLM software systems and the need for each customer to innovate business practices in a vacuum. Each PLM project has been a start-from-scratch exercise, and the embedded processes hard-coded by the conventional software vendors cannot be adapted to fit endusers’ goals of the continuous improvement and process innovation. By combing the open exchange of PLM best practices between like-minded market leaders, with a uniquely different architectural approach, the Model-Based SOA, Aras is enabling the deployment of world-class PLM implementations. Enterprise Open Source -- openly distributed, flexible, scalable and robust business software solutions with commercial enterprise-class support provided by a single for-profit company, in which both the source code for the software solutions and the ideas behind the implemented best practices are openly shared between like-minded enterprises. Page 1 of 21 Aras’ practical approach is reflected in its corporate philosophy, as well as its technology. The company prides itself on traditional business values that include listening to customers, understanding their needs, and using this information to provide quality solutions that deliver real business value. Aras is a private company based in Andover, Massachusetts and is funded by leading investment firms Greylock, Matrix Partners, and Oak Investment Partners. Aras’ approach has been validated by external organizations and provided is a sample of what people are saying about Aras. “Aras’ proven ability to quickly develop enterprise applications and business solutions is impressive.” - Ed Miller, President - CIMdata “Aras is driving the cost of (software) change to zero.” - Scott Lundstrum, former CTO - AMR Research “Aras gives our management team a solution that will be both cost effective and able to quickly adapt to any future changes to business requirement.” - Corporate Commodity Manager – Freudenberg-NOK Conventional PLM/PDM systems were designed in an era of big spending, massive implementations, never-ending consulting engagements, high-end custom coding and steep maintenance costs. While the need for PLM has grown and the economic times have changed, the industry’s solutions have remained complex and difficult to manage. Aras has answered the market need to accelerate the deployment and lower the risk of PLM in three significant ways: 1. User-friendly enterprise solutions for everyday users to efficiently manage projects, processes, documents and information in real-time without hiring consultants or requiring extensive programming resources. 2. Aras UNLIMITED Support Subscriptions providing live access to a dedicated support engineer that knows your configuration and implementation. 3. Enterprise Open Source business model to provide answers, innovation, and leadership beyond what a single software company can delivery. What are the requirements for running your system? TM Aras Innovator is a Microsoft .NET based Web application. A Microsoft Windows Server, SQL Server, the .NET environment, and a Microsoft based PC workstation or laptop running Internet TM Explorer 6.0 or higher are required. Aras Innovator can also be run as a multi-tenant hosted service. Contact [email protected] for more information about the hosting packages. 3. What method would be used for project team members to access the system? Internal users will access the Innovator server via their Web Browser 4. What method would be used for suppliers and outsourced manufacturers to access the system? External users and suppliers will access the Aras Innovator with a web browser connecting to the server through either a secure Reverse-Proxy Server connection or a VPN connection. 5. What methods could be used to alert people of status changes, actions required etc.? Assignment of action items, workflow activities, and overdue tasks is made through both email (supporting any SMTP compliant email system such as Exchange) and through an In-Basket within Aras Innovator. Users who do not have access to an Email account will be able to logon to Aras Innovator and view a real-time task list. 6. Do you support automated actions? Based on what criteria? Aras Innovator is able to automate certain actions such as preparing and sending data to an ERP system, automating the check-in of files released from a CAD application, or distributing a report. These automations are called “Methods” and they are triggered by “Events” on either the server or the client. Aras Innovator has a robust set of Events that the administrator can use as triggers for business process automations, including: approval of a document, modification of data, completion of a project assignment, or the receipt of a SOAP message from an external system. Page 10 of 21 7. How is security handled in your system? Data security is enforced through the use of a single database logon and a single privileged user account with access to the file vault. The Aras Innovator application server acts as a proxy for all data and vault transactions, ensuring that all access to data is controlled by the Aras Innovator Identity Permissions control layer. MD5 is used to encrypt certain data fields before transmission (e.g. passwords). All users are assigned a unique username/password account (Identity) within Aras Innovator. These user accounts can be administered within the Aras Innovator administration screens or using LDAP. 8. What information can be restricted? Can it be defined by user, by group? The Aras Innovator Identity Permissions security model is an Identity membership-based security scheme combined with a “need to know” object-level access list technology developed in partnership with Aras aerospace & defense industry customers. User’s are assigned to Identities (analogous to Groups) and all tasks, objects, forms etc. have a ‘need-to-know’ list of Identities that are allowed to access them for read, update, management and deletion. Similar to ActiveDirectory, the Identity based security scheme is a membership manager. Each user is assigned membership into one of more groups (Identities). Those groups have a hierarchy of membership within other groups, inheriting the rights of the organizations of which they are members. Each business item (BOM, Drawing, Supplier, Workflow, Material Master, etc.) has a default access assigned to it upon creation. This default is then modified, as required, for each instance of the business item, throughout its lifecycle, to produce a true “need-to-know” list for each. Company business rules determine the level of security required; simple broadbrush, role based access or specific “need-to-know” lists of individuals for each Item/object. The power and flexibility of this model enables companies to include their suppliers and customers as real-time users within the PLM system with the confidence that visibility is restricted and intellectual property is protected. 9. Can your system be setup to integrate into an ERP? Through what methods? Aras Innovator is successfully integrated with numerous ERP systems. Aras Innovator is a native XML application and the preferred data exchange technology is XML sent as SOAP messages. Since many ERP systems are not yet XML-ready, interfaces are often built with direct ODBC database connections or ASCII file exchange. ERP and CAD systems that have robust API’s can be interfaced using the API functions. All of the .NET languages are available for creating custom interfaces, and Microsoft BizTalk Server enterprise application integration solution or other EAI solutions can be used to deliver the needed integrations. Page 11 of 21 10. Describe the process of editing or adding a workflow to the system. Tailoring Aras Innovator is performed using the Administrator’s Solution Studio screens using Internet Explorer. Forms, Workflows, Lifecycles, Identity membership etc, are all administered using an intuitive drag-n-drop interface. The Aras enterprise solutions are provided with preconfigured workflow process maps. The customer is able to modify these maps or create entirely new processes using the GUI-based solution studio provided. 11. How are additional solutions or extensions to existing solutions handled? Aras Corp is unique within the PLM industry with application templates for product engineering, program management, quality planning, quality systems, manufacturing tooling, and other supply chain functions. If the necessary business processes are not addressed with existing solutions new solutions can be created quickly and easily using the Solution Studio to deliver new forms, workflows, and business logic that inherently integrate to existing solutions and provide a consistent look & feel for users. Page 12 of 21 Application Architecture Aras Innovator is a web application framework implementation of a Model-Based SOA (service-oriented ® architecture). The Aras Innovator architecture delivers robust, flexible applications that are exceptionally easy to maintain, change, upgrade, integrate, and extend. The Aras Innovator architecture is entirely based on standard Internet protocols including HTTP/HTTPS, XML and SOAP. The server is a .NET application running inside IIS. Client interface and all integrations are via XML and Web services. The Model-Based approach makes creating and changing applications intuitive. Flow charts and process diagrams are used to define applications. An application is modified by changing a diagram instead of programming a large block of complex code. The diagrams that describe applications are defined in XML and subscribe to a set of shared services. When a change is made to an application diagram the running system is updated instantaneously. By using a model-based approach, non-technical personnel can quickly and easily tailor and deploy many applications without programming. Any required application or integration programming is accomplished using the .NET programming languages, XML and JavaScript. Integration is simplified with open APIs that link deep into the architecture. The APIs send and receive XML / SOAP messages, and publish a complete data dictionary providing a standard interface making the exchange of data with other systems straightforward. Federation capabilities enable the incorporation of data from other enterprise systems without directly managing the data within Aras Innovator. End-users, administrators and developers use the same intuitive browser-based interface. The interface requires no client-side administration. The Aras Innovator architecture dramatically reduces the time, cost, and effort associated with implementing and running enterprise applications. The result is a faster time to value and lower total cost of ownership significantly lower than conventional enterprise systems Page 13 of 21 Other Clients Web Interface Solution Studio Reporting Business Logic Outlook .NET UI Components Word Excel Project SharePoint Innovator Object Model Web Parts Microsoft Reporting Services XML/SOAP Client Side Server Side Federation Services Vaulting Services Cache Event Services Transaction Mgt Security Services O-R Mapping Search Services Data Access Components Classification Services Meta Data Management Lifecycle Services Business Objects & Processes Configuration Services Business Logic Workflow Services SOA Web Services XML/SOAP Web Services .NET Integrations ADO ODBC Flat File Direct API ADO.NET Data Access SQL Server Legacy Systems Business Logic Business Objects & Processes Object Definitions Process Definitions Aras File Vault System Definition Page 14 of 21 Typical Technology Architecture Technology Specifications: Platforms & Standards Aras ® Corporation is committed to standard Internet protocols and common platform.
