Please ensure that an “Off Hire Note” and number is collected when equipment is returned. • • Equipment may be booked in advance at no extra cost, either by telephone, email, website or by visiting your local depot. Please take care when using our hire equipment. Read and follow all instructions carefully and use the correct safety equipment where necessary. • New equipment is continually being added to our stocks, if you do not see what you require please ask for information from the hire desk. • Damage waiver and hire insurance are available please ask for more information from your local depot. • We reserve the right to alter, amend or increase the times of opening, hire periods, prices or types and specifications of equipment shown, without prior notice. • Terms and conditions of hire are printed on the reverse of the contract. • A delivery and collection service is available at competitive rates. • Credit accounts are available, please ask for an application form. • The hirer is responsible for ensuring that all equipment hired is kept in a safe working condition, as damage is chargeable. Alan Guthre visited both of them: W hen we profiled Artisan Hire Centres exactly five years ago, the world was a different place. The ‘credit crunch’ would go on to effect businesses at a national and local level. At the time, Artisan had plans to expand its operation by adding to existing locations in Swindon, Melksham, Chippenham and Bristol. As Directors Chris Comer and Jason King put it back then, “We have a clear plan of where we want to be in five years. Our goal is a network of ten depots - but not at any cost.” This level-headed outlook has subsequently paid off, with Artisan initially re-focusing on growing its existing operations, ensuring a sound platform for the eventual opening, during the second half of 2012, of two new depots in Staverton near Cheltenham, and in Oxford. Following the economic uncertainty, we, like everyone else, adopted a cautious outlook and put expansion plans on hold. Nevertheless, we were still extremely busy and so were our customers. November 2008 was, up to that date, our best month ever. The slowdown came overnight the following month, and trading conditions were challenging until around June 2009. However, we kept all our staff, spent wisely and focused on developing our customer base. “In fact, although new depots were put on hold, overall we continued to expand, meeting customers’ needs. Demand dictated that we needed to add our first mini excavators but, as an independent, you cannot go out and buy a fleet overnight.We would add, say, two machines plus other equipment we required. The fleet grew gradually and, in a sense, we have grown with it, responding to customers who appreciate our service and expect to pay a realistic rate for it.” Indeed, as Artisan’s customers won business over a wider area, they looked to the hirer to serve them in areas such as Bracknell, Cheltenham, Cullompton, Gloucester, High Wycombe, Oxford, Reading and Tewkesbury. “We increased our fleet of vehicles, which were covering a greater mileage, recruited more drivers, and, at times, hire desk staff were making deliveries,” said Chris. “We also put in place measures such as upgrading our inspHire computer software to handle increasing business volumes, and continued to buy more equipment for key markets. We could have invested the resources in another depot immediately, but it was more important to get the infrastructure right first.” REVISITING THE PLAN Having weathered the recession and grown its business, revisiting the plan for additional depots was the logical next step. “Early in 2011, a customer told us he was working on an industrial unit being built in Staverton, Gloucestershire, opposite what he thought was the busiest builders’ merchant he had ever seen, and that the owners would eventually be looking for a tenant whose activity complemented their business. We visited the trading estate site and were similarly impressed. The location was perfect, positioned between Cheltenham and Gloucester, had great motorway links” said Chris. Staverton opened its doors in early April 2012, “ahead of schedule because people had seen us moving in and wanted to hire from us,” said Jason King. “As the building was brand new, we had a blank canvas to work with and tailored it to our requirements. We have bought new equipment for the fleet, such as Pramac petrol generators, Thwaites 1 tonne Hi-Tip dumpers, Red Band power floats and Niftylift trailermounted booms. However, we do not regard equipment as ‘belonging’ to any one depot, and we move it between locations to wherever it is needed.”. No sooner had Artisan begun contemplating opening Staverton, than the decision was made to establish another depot in Oxford, particularly as one of the people principally behind the recommendation was Chris’ father, Roger, who is still a Director of Artisan. Roger Comer, and Mick Batten (who still works at the Bristol depot) were amongst the founders of Action Plant Hire, in whoseSwindon depot Chris first worked in hire. “My father is normally very cautious, so when he suggested we should also open in Oxford, it reinforced our belief that it was the right thing to do,” said Chris. “We found a great site on a trading estate in Botley, on the Swindon side of Oxford, again with excellent road connections. It has 3,000ft2 of space plus a mezzanine floor, and there are many ‘trade counter’ type businesses around us bringing potential customers virtually to our door.” Oxford opened in mid-October 2012 with Depot Manager Tony Wood transferring from Artisan’s Swindon branch. Throughout its six locations, the company now employs 40 full-time and part-time staff. Artisan continues to develop its fleet, with other recent purchases including Atlas Copco compressors, Husqvarna K760 cut-off saws, Ox Group diamond blades and PPE, GenSet 6kVA and 10.5kVA diesel generators, and Fairport hydraulic breakers. The company also augments its TowerLight lighting tower fleet by using MHM Plant’s re-hire service, ensuring it has additional equipment available without committing capital resources. “We enjoy dealing with suppliers who understand hire and provide quality equipment”.Reflecting its expansion, Artisan has also bought another KFS Plant & Go vehicle, its fifth. It has a low 560mm deck height to facilitate loading. “It is ideal for the kind of equipment we offer, as it can carry loads of up to 1600kg,” said Jason. “It also means we do not have to tow trailers, and anyone with a standard licence can drive it.” More growth can be expected at Artisan.
