before using the telephone. See pages 5-6 for easy instructions. If you subscribe to high speed Internet service (DSL - digital subscriber line) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between each telephone line cord and telephone wall jack (pages 5 and 6). The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters. Your product may be shipped with a protective sticker covering the telephone base display - remove it before use. Option 1: To install your telephone in a low tabletop position, insert the fixed tabs of the mounting bracket into the slots labeled a . Press the flexible tabs into the slots labeled b until they click into place. Getting started Telephone installation Option 2: If you have two one-line wall jacks, install your telephone base as shown below. Plug the other end of the clear telephone line cord (2-conductor) into the wall jack. L1 Plug the other end of the black telephone line cord (4-conductor) into the wall jack. L2 Plug the large end of the power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. If you have DSL high speed Internet service, a DSL filter (not included) is required. Plug one end of the clear telephone line cord (2-conductor) into the jack labeled LINE 1/L1+L2 on the back of the telephone base. Plug one end of the black telephone line cord (4-conductor) into the jack labeled LINE 2 on the back of the telephone base. 9V AC POWER Plug the small end of the power adapter into the power jack on the back of the telephone base. Plug the other end of the coiled handset cord into the jack at the left side of the telephone base. One end of the coiled telephone line cord has already been plugged into the handset. Getting started Data port If you want to connect another device (such as a modem or fax machine) to the wall jack, use the jack labeled DATA on the back of the telephone base. The data port uses line 2 only. 9V AC POWER DATA port  Getting started Installation options If you want to mount your telephone on a wall, connect the telephone base to a standard dual-stud telephone wall mounting plate. If you do not have this mounting plate, you can purchase one from many hardware or consumer electronics retailers. Professional assistance may be required to install the mounting plate. Tabletop to wall installation To install your telephone base in the wall installation position, make sure you first unplug the power adapter from the electrical outlet and the telephone line cord from the wall outlet. 1. Hold down the switch hook on the telephone base, then slide the handset tab upwards to remove it from the slot. Rotate the handset tab 1800 degrees. Push the handset tab down into the slot until it locks into position. Switch hook Handset tab 2. Depending on whether the mounting bracket is in low or high tabletop position, press the flexible tabs to release the mounting bracket. Remove the mounting bracket from the telephone base. Plug the coiled handset cord into the handset and the telephone base. Plug the small end of the power adapter cord into the power jack on the back of the telephone base. 4. Plug the telephone line cords into the wall jacks. Option 1: If you have a single two-line wall jack, use only the black telephone line cord (4-conductor). Plug one end of the black telephone line cord into the jack labeled LINE 1/L1+L2 on the back of the telephone base. Plug the large end of the power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. If you have DSL high speed Internet service, a DSL filter (not included) is required. L1+L2 9V AC POWER Option 2: If you have two separate one-line wall jacks, use both telephone line cords. Plug one end of the clear telephone line cord into the jack labeled LINE 1/L1+L2 on the back of the telephone base. Plug one end of the black telephone line cord into the jack labeled LINE 2. Plug the other end of the clear telephone line cord and the other end of the black telephone line cord into the wall jacks. Mount the telephone on the mounting plate until it is held securely into position. Plug the large end of the power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. Wall to tabletop installation To return the telephone base from wall installation to tabletop position: 1. Unwrap the telephone line cord. Remove the telephone base from the wall. Unplug the telephone line cord from the telephone wall jack and the power adapter cord from the electrical outlet. 10 Getting started Installation options 2. Follow the steps in Telephone base installation on pages 4-6 to install your telephone for tabletop use. 11 Getting started Optional headset You can use this telephone hands free when you install any industry standard 2.5mm corded telephone headset (purchased separately). The telephone plays an error tone if you press HEADSET when a headset is not plugged into the headset jack. For best results, use an AT&T 2.5mm headset. Plug a 2.5mm headset into the jack on the right side of the telephone base (beneath the small rubber flap). Directory card Use the directory card to record the names of the speed dial numbers you stored. To write names on the directory card: 1. Remove the clear plastic cover by inserting the tip of a small item such as a paperclip into the hole at the top edge of the cover. 2. Pull out the directory card. 3. Write the information on the directory card. 4. Replace the directory card and the plastic cover. To change the directory card: 1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 above to remove the old directory card. 2. Insert the new directory card and replace the plastic cover. 12 Menu setup Telephone settings Menu overview Use the menus to change the telephone settings. 1. When the telephone is idle, press MENU� /ENTER to enter the main menu. 2. Press or to scroll to the feature to be changed. Press MENU/ENTER. 3. Press or to scroll to the desired settings. 4. Press MENU/ENTER to save your selection. The telephone plays a confirmation tone and returns to the previous menu. To exit without making changes, press CANCEL. -ORPress and hold CANCEL to return to idle mode. NOTE: If no key is pressed within 30 seconds, the telephone automatically returns to idle mode. Press MENU/ENTER to select Set date/time. 4. Use the dialing keys to enter the correct date and Set date/time time. To enter a number that is less than 10, enter a __/__ __:__ AM 0 before the digit. Press CID/ or /DIR to move the MM/DD HH/MM cursor to the left or right. -ORSet DATE/Time 01/01 12:01 AM Press or to scroll to the desired digit. The telephone plays a confirmation tone and returns to the previous menu. NOTE: The telephone plays an error tone if you enter an invalid date or time. Set the primary line Use this feature to select the default telephone line to be used when you make calls. The primary line is set to Line1 by default. 1. The telephone plays a confirmation tone and returns to the previous me���� nu. 14 Menu setup Telephone settings Choose the preferred mode You can set the preferred mode to speakerphone or headset. Your selection is used automatically when dialing a number from the directory, redial or call history without lifting the handset. Your selection is also used for speed dialing when auto speaker is set to On (see Turn auto speaker on or off on page 29). If a corded headset is not plugged in, the speakerphone is used automatically. The preferred mode is set to Speakerphone by default. To change the setting: Phone SETTINGS 1. NOTES: • Pressing VOL+ or VOL- when the telephone is idle adjusts the ringer volume for both lines. • When a line is ringing, press VOL+ or VOL- to adjust the ringer volume of that line temporarily. The next call will ring at the preset volume. • If the ringer for either or both lines is muted, Ringer off for the corresponding line or both lines (L1, L2 or L1&2) appears on the screen when the telephone is idle or there is an incoming call. Language Use this feature to change the display language that is used in all menus and screens. This telephone is set to use English for display by default. 1. The telephone plays a confirmation tone and returns to the previous m����� enu. 16 Menu setup Telephone settings Set home and local area codes If you dial seven digits to make a local call (no area code required), enter your area code into the telephone as the home area code. When you receive a call from within your home area code, the caller ID history only displays the seven digits of the telephone number, and when you dial from the caller ID history, only seven digits are dialed. This feature makes it easy for you to place a call from the caller ID history. If you must dial 10 digits (area code + telephone number) to make a local call, do not program the home area code. Then, if you receive a call from within your area code, the screen displays the 10 digits of the telephone number, and when you dial from the caller ID history, all 10 digits will be dialed. 1. When the telephone is idle, press MENU/ENTER. CALL HISTORY 2. Press or to scroll to Set area code. Speed dial Press MENU/ENTER. Phone settings SET Area code 3. The telephone plays a confirmation tone and returns to the previous ������ menu. 17 Menu setup Voicemail indicator settings Voicemail indicator If you subscribe to voicemail service offered by your telephone service provider, this feature provides a visual indication when you have new voicemail messages on either line. Voice mail displays and the corresponding line blinks on the screen to indicate there are new voicemail messages on that line. 9:34 L1:00 L2:00 voice am 1/13 new calls new calls mail:l2 Clear voicemail indication After you have listened to all new voicemail messages, the indicators turn off automatically. Use the clear voicemail feature when the telephone indicates that there is new voicemail when there is none (for example, when you have accessed your voicemail while away from home). The clear voicemail feature only turns off the indicators; it does not delete your voicemail messages. As long as you have new voicemail messages, your telephone service provider continues to send the signal that turns on the indicator. To manually turn off the indicator, follow the steps below. 1. When the telephone is idle, press MENU/ENTER. 2. Press or to scroll to VOICE MAIL. Press MENU/ENTER. 3. Press or to scroll to Clear voicemail. Press MENU/ENTER. 4. Press or to scroll to Line1&2, Line1, or Line2. 5. Press MENU/ENTER to save. If you do not subscribe to voicemail service or want to disable the indicator, turn off the COVM feature. 1. When the telephone is idle, press MENU/ENTER. Speed dial 2. Clear voicemail L1 COVM ON/OFF On Off 19 Telephone operation Basic operation By default, the telephone is set to use line 1 for making calls. To change the primary line, see Set the primary line on page 14. When you answer a call, the telephone automatically selects the ringing line. Making, answering or ending a call To make a call with the speakerphone: 1. Press SPEAKER to use the primary line. -ORTo override automatic line selection, press SPEAKER , then press LINE 1 or LINE 2. -ORIf you choose Speakerphone in Choose the preferred mode (see page 15), press LINE 1 or LINE 2 directly to activate the speakerphone. 2. Wait for a dial tone, then dial the telephone number. The screen displays the elapsed time as you talk (in hours, minutes and seconds). 3. Lift the handset to use the primary line. -ORLift the handset, then press LINE 1 or LINE 2 to override automatic line selection. 2. Wait for a dial tone, then dial the number. 3. Place the handset on the telephone base to hang up. To make a call with the corded headset: Make sure the corded headset is connected to the telephone base (see page 12). 1. Press HEADSET on the telephone base to use the primary line. -ORPress HEADSET, then press LINE 1 or LINE 2 to override automatic line selection. -ORIf you chose Headset in Choose the preferred mode (see page 15), press LINE 1 or LINE 2 directly to activate the headset. 2. Wait for a dial tone, then dial the number. 3. Press HEADSET to hang up. 20 Telephone operation Basic operation To answer a call: • Lift the handset, or press SPEAKER or HEADSET. -ORPress the LINE button of the ringing line to answer the call with the preferred mode (see Choose the preferred mode on page 15). On hook dialing (predialing) 1. Use the dialing keys to enter a telephone number. Press REMOVE to make corrections when entering the telephone number. 2. Lift the handset, or press SPEAKER or HEADSET. -ORPress LINE 1 or LINE 2 to override automatic line selection and dial the number using your preferred mode (see Choose the preferred mode on page 15). ClearspeakTM dial-in-base speakerphone During a call using the handset, press SPEAKER , then hang up the handset. This allows you to use the telephone hands free and lets more people participate in the conversation. Switching between the handset, headset and speakerphone To switch from the handset to speakerphone: While on a call using the handset, press SPEAKER , then hang up the handset. NOTE: If there is no number stored in the redial memory when you press REDIAL, there is an error tone. 22 Telephone operation Options while on calls Volume control You can set the listening volume for the handset and headset to one of four levels, or one of eight levels for the speakerphone. When you are on a call, press VOL+ to increase the handset, speakerphone or headset listening volume. Press VOL- to decrease the listening volume. There are four beeps when you reach the minimum or maximum level. Flash/call waiting If you subscribe to call waiting service with your telephone service provider (see About caller ID on page 35), you hear a beep if someone calls while you are already on a call. • Press FLASH to put your current call on hold and take the new call. • Press FLASH at any time to switch back and forth between calls. Mute Use this feature during a telephone conversation to silence the microphone. You can hear the other party, but the other party cannot hear you. To mute a call: • During a call, press MUTE. When mute is on, the MUTE light turns on and the screen displays MUTE. To take a call off mute: • Press MUTE again and resume speaking. NOTE: The mute function cancels when you change lines, put a call on hold, start a conference call or switch between the handset, headset and speakerphone. Hold Use this feature to hold one or both lines. To put a call on hold: • While on a call, press HOLD. The LINE indicator for that line flashes slowly to indicate the line is on hold. If you are using the speakerphone, the speakerphone turns off automatically when you press HOLD. To release hold and return to the call: • Press the LINE button for the call to continue the call using the preferred mode. -ORPress HOLD again. The LINE indicator for the call remains on steadily when you release hold. 23 Telephone operation Options while on calls Switching between lines Use this feature to switch between lines during a call. 1. While on a call, press the LINE button of the line not in use to establish a new call or answer an incoming call on that line. The original line is automatically put on hold. 2. To return to the first call, press the original LINE button. The other line is automatically put on hold. Conference calls Use this feature to set up a three-party call by using two lines at the same time. To make a three-way conference call: 1. Make or answer a call. 2. Press the other LINE button to establish a new call or answer an incoming call and put the original line on hold. 3. Press CONF to begin a three-party conference call. The screen displays Line 1 & line 2 in conference. If the caller on line 2 hangs up during the conference call, the call continues on line 1. However, if the caller on line 1 hangs up, a tone plays. Press the LINE 2 button to stop the tone and continue the call with line 2. To place a conference call on hold: 1. While on a conference call, press HOLD to hold both lines. 2. Press CONF to release hold and continue the conference call. To talk privately with one caller: 1. Press HOLD to hold both lines. Press the desired LINE button for the caller you want to speak with. 2. Press CONF to continue the conference call. To drop one line: • Press the LINE button for the caller you want to speak with. The other call is disconnected automatically. The number is dialed automatically. 25 Telephone operation Line power mode (no AC power) This telephone provides minimal functionality during a power failure. When AC power is not available, the screen is blank and many telephone features do not function. Only touch-tone dialing and handset volume adjustment are supported. The telephone uses power from the telephone line to enable you to make and answer calls on LINE 1 only using only the handset and dialing keys. To make a call during a power failure 1. Lift the handset and wait for the dial tone. The screen shows NO AC POWER. 2. Dial a telephone number using the dialing keys. Wait to hear each key tone and make sure the digit appears on the screen before pressing the next dialing key. To answer a call during a power failure • Lift the handset. NOTES: • The screen does not show incoming caller ID information during a power failure. • If the telephone loses power during a call, the screen display may become unstable. Try resetting the screen by unplugging the power adapter and plugging it back in after a few seconds, or after power returns following a power failure. 26 Speed dial Speed dial memory overview This telephone has 18 speed dial locations for storing telephone numbers. You can store up to 24 digits in each location. If the number you stored is over 24 digits, the screen displays Only 24 digits are allowed. Only the first nine locations can be accessed by directly pressing the speed dial keys. To access the next nine locations, press LOWER and then the speed dial key for the desired location. You may wish to write the names or telephone numbers of speed dial entries on the directory card, using the white spaces for the first nine speed dial locations and the gray spaces for the lower nine speed dial locations. If the number you entered is over 24 digits, the screen shows Only 24 digits are allowed. A convenient search feature can help you quickly find and dial numbers (see Searching by name on page 33). If you try to add a new contact and there are already 100 entries, the screen shows Memory Full. You cannot store a new number until you delete one. The screen displays STORED to dir with a confirmation tone. 34 Caller ID About caller ID This product supports caller ID services offered by most telephone service providers. Caller ID allows you to see the name, number, date and time of calls. The available caller ID information will appear after the first or second ring. Information about caller ID with call waiting Caller ID with call waiting lets you see the name and telephone number of the caller before answering the telephone, and while on another call. There are fees for caller ID services. In addition, this service might be called different names (such as caller ID with visual call waiting) by different telephone service providers and might not be available in all areas. 8:00 AM 8887227702 L1 1/11 0:00:08 It might be necessary to change your telephone service to use this feature. This product can provide information only if both you and the caller are in areas offering caller ID service and if both telephone companies use compatible equipment. The time and date are from the telephone service provider along with the call information. Caller ID information might not be available for every incoming call. Callers may intentionally block their names and/or telephone numbers. NOTES: • You can use this product with regular caller ID service, or you can use this product’s other features without subscribing to caller ID or combined caller ID with call waiting service. • The format of telephone numbers displayed depends on the home and local area codes you set (see Set home and local area codes on page 17). 35 Caller ID About caller ID How caller ID history (call log) works The telephone stores caller ID information for the last 99 incoming calls. Entries are stored in reverse chronological order. The telephone deletes the oldest entry when the log is full to make room for new calls. If you answer a call before the information appears on the screen, it does not show in the caller ID history. Review the caller ID history to determine who called, return the call, or copy the caller’s name and number into your directory or speed dial memory. LX: XX NEW CALLS appears if there are new call history entries that have not been reviewed on that line (X is the line number and XX is the number of missed calls). CALL HISTORY EMPTY appears if there are no records in the call log. The time and date of the call and the caller’s name and telephone number are included in the display. Caller ID information appears on the screen as the telephone rings, or until the caller hangs up, or until the call ends. If you subscribe to caller ID service, the time and date are automatically reset with the incoming call. You can also set the time and date manually (see Set date and time on page 14). If the name has more than 16 characters, only the first 16 characters appear. 36 Caller ID Caller ID operation Memory match If the incoming telephone number matches the last seven digits of the telephone number in your directory, the name that appears on the screen matches the corresponding name in your directory. For example, if Christine Smith calls, her name appears as Chris if this is how you entered it into your directory. NOTE: The number you see on your caller ID is in the format from the telephone service provider. It usually delivers 10-digit telephone numbers (area code plus telephone number). The telephone system ignores the area code when searching for a match and displays the name of the corresponding number from the directory. Missed calls indicator All new or missed call history entries are counted as missed calls. Each time you review a call history entry with NEW, the number of missed calls decreases by one. When all the entries in the call log have been reviewed, the missed calls indicator will be removed from the display. Reviewing call history 1. For customer service, visit our website at www.telephones.att.com or call 1 (800) 222-3111. In Canada, dial 1 (866) 288-4268. My telephone does not work at all. • Make sure the power adapter is securely plugged into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. • Make sure you plug the telephone line cord securely and firmly into the telephone jack and the telephone wall jack. • Unplug the power adapter from the electrical outlet. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the telephone to reset. • Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone wall jack and plug in a working telephone. If that telephone does not work, the problem is probably in the wiring or the telephone service. Call your telephone service provider. I cannot get a dial tone. • First, try all suggestions above. • Make sure you plug the handset cord securely and firmly into the handset jack on the telephone base and the corded handset. • Your telephone line cord might be malfunctioning. Try installing a new telephone line cord. • Make sure HOLD is not pressed. • If there is no dial tone when the HEADSET key is pressed, make sure a corded headset is firmly connected into the headset jack. • If you are only using one telephone line, make sure to set it as the primary line (see Set the primary line on page 14). • If the previous suggestions do not work, disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack and connect to a different telephone. If there is no dial tone on that telephone either, the problem is in your wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider. I cannot dial out. • First try all the suggestions above. • Make sure there is a dial tone before dialing. The telephone might take a second or two to produce a dial tone. This is normal. Wait an extra second before dialing. • Check that all the telephones connected to the same telephone line are hung up. 44 Appendix Troubleshooting • Eliminate any background noise. Noise from a television, radio or other appliances might cause the telephone to not dial out properly. If you cannot eliminate the background noise, first try muting the corded handset before dialing, or dialing from another room with less background noise. • If other telephones in your building are having the same problem, contact your telephone service provider (charges might apply). I hear other calls while using my telephone. • Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack, and plug in a different telephone. If you still hear other calls, call your telephone service provider. My telephone does not ring when I receive a call. • Make sure that the ringer is not turned off (see Ringer volume on page 16). • Make sure you plug in the telephone line cord securely into the telephone base and the telephone jack. Make sure you plug in the power cord securely. • There might be too many extension telephones on the telephone line to allow all of them to ring simultaneously. Try unplugging one telephone at a time until the telephones start ringing. • If other telephones in your building are having the same problem, contact your telephone service provider (charges might apply). • Test a working telephone at the telephone jack. If another telephone has the same problem, contact your telephone service provider (charges might apply). • Your telephone line cord might be defective. Try installing a new telephone line cord. My calls cut in and out while I’m using my corded handset. • If you are using the handset when this problem occurs, try unplugging the coiled handset cord and firmly plugging it in the handset and telephone base again. • If you are using the headset, try unplugging it and firmly plugging it in again. • If you are using the speakerphone, eliminate any background noise. Noise from a television, radio, or other appliances might cause the speakerphone to cut in and out. Try pressing MUTE when you are not speaking to eliminate the background noise. • Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone wall jack and plug in another corded telephone. If calls are still not clear, the problem is probably in the wiring or telephone service. Contact your telephone service provider (charges may apply). 45 Appendix Troubleshooting • If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (DSL - digital subscriber line) through your telephone line(s), you must install a DSL filter between each telephone line cord and telephone wall jack (see Telephone base installation on pages 5-6). The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters. My caller ID isn’t working. • Caller ID is a subscription service. You must subscribe to this service from your telephone service provider for this feature to work on your telephone base. • The caller must be calling from an area that supports caller ID. • Both your and your caller’s telephone service provider must use caller ID compatible equipment. • If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (DSL - digital subscriber line) through your telephone line(s), you must install a DSL filter between each telephone line cord and telephone wall jack (see Telephone base installation on pages 5-6). The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems resulting from DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters. System does not receive caller ID when on a call. • Make sure you subscribe to caller ID with call waiting features from your telephone service provider. Caller ID feature works only if both you and the caller are in areas offering caller ID service, and if both telephone companies use compatible equipment. Voicemail appears and L1 and/or L2 flashes on the display. • Your telephone has voicemail indication. If Voicemail appears and L1 and/or L2 flashes on the display, then your telephone has received a signal from your telephone service provider that you have a voicemail message on line 1 and/or line 2 waiting for you to retrieve from your telephone service provider. Contact your telephone service provider for more information on how to access your voicemail. My LCD screen isn’t functioning normally. • When the telephone loses power during a call, the screen may temporarily stop functioning normally and freeze, display text incorrectly or exhibit other unstable behavior. Try resetting the phone by unplugging the power adapter and plugging it back in after a few seconds, or after power returns following a power failure. 46 Appendix Troubleshooting I subscribe to a nontraditional telephone service that uses my computer to establish connections, and my telephone doesn’t work. • Make sure your computer is powered on. • Make sure your Internet connection is working properly. • Make sure that the software is installed and running for your nontraditional telephone service. • Make sure to plug your USB telephone adapter into a dedicated USB port on your computer. Do not plug into a multiple port USB hub (USB splitter) that is not powered. • In a few rare instances, the USB port on your computer may not have enough power. In these instances, try using a USB hub with its own external power supply. • If you are using a firewall, it may prevent access to your nontraditional telephone service. Contact your service provider for more information. Common cure for electronic equipment. If the telephone base does not seem to be responding normally, do the following (in the order listed): • Disconnect the power to the telephone base. • Wait a few minutes. • Connect the power to the telephone base. 47 Appendix General product care To keep your telephone working well and looking good, follow these guidelines: • Avoid putting it near heating appliances and devices that generate electrical noise (for example, motors or fluorescent lamps). • DO NOT expose it to direct sunlight or moisture. • Avoid dropping the telephone or treating it roughly. • Clean with a soft cloth. • Never use a strong cleaning agent or abrasive powder because this can damage the finish. • Retain the original packaging in case you need to ship it at a later date. 48 Appendix Important safety information This symbol is to alert you to important operating or servicing instructions that may appear in this user’s manual. Always follow basic safety precautions when using this product to reduce the risk of injury, fire, or electric shock. Safety information • Read and understand all instructions in the user’s manual. Observe all markings on the product. • Avoid using a telephone during a thunderstorm. There might be a slight chance of electric shock from lightning. • Do not use a telephone in the vicinity of a gas leak. Under certain circumstances, a spark may be created when the adapter is plugged into the power outlet, or when the handset is replaced in its cradle. This is a common event associated with the closing of any electrical circuit. The user should not plug the phone into a power outlet, and should not put a charged handset into the cradle, if the phone is located in an environment containing concentrations of flammable or flame-supporting gases, unless there is adequate ventilation. A spark in such an environment could create a fire or explosion. Calls cannot be made from the handset if the telephone base is unplugged, switched off, or if the electrical power is interrupted. • Power adapter: The power adapter is intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor mount position. The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under-the-table or cabinet outlet. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 49 Appendix FCC and ACTA information If this equipment was approved for connection to the telephone network prior to July 23, 2001, it complies with Part 68 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. Connection and use with the nationwide telephone network The plug and jack used to connect this equipment to the premises wiring and the telephone network must comply with the applicable Part 68 rules and technical requirements adopted by ACTA. A compliant telephone cord and modular plug is provided with this product. It is designed to be connected to a compatible modular wall jack that is also compliant. An RJ11 jack should normally be used for connecting to a single line and an RJ14 jack for two lines, see installation instructions in the user’s manual. This equipment may not be used with coin telephone lines or with party lines. If you have specially wired alarm dialing equipment connected to your telephone line, ensure the connection of this equipment does not disable your alarm equipment. If you have questions about what will disable the alarm equipment, consult your telephone service provider or qualified installer. 3. Repair instructions If this equipment is malfunctioning, it must be unplugged from the modular wall jack until the problem has been corrected. Programming/testing of emergency numbers If this product has memory dialing locations, you may choose to store police, fire department and emergency medical service telephone numbers in these locations. We recommend that you also write the telephone number on the directory card (if applicable), so that you can still dial the emergency number manually if the memory dialing feature doesn’t work. b. This feature is provided only as a convenience, and the manufacturer assumes no responsibility for customer reliance upon the memory feature. c. Testing the emergency telephone numbers you have stored is not recommended. However, if you do make a call to an emergency number: • You must remain on the line and briefly explain the reason for the call before hanging up. • Programming/testing of emergency numbers should be performed during off-peak hours, such as in the early morning or late evening, when the emergency services tend to be less busy. 51 Appendix Part 15 of FCC rules Some telephone equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy and, if not installed and used properly, may cause interference to radio and television reception. This product has been tested and found to meet the standards for a class B digital device, as specified in Part 15 of the FCC rules. These specifications are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. Enables remote call answer/end with your headset. 3 HL10™ Lifter Automatically lifts handset and returns it to the cradle. Enables remote call answer/end with your headset. 6 Customize Your Headset Your headset comes configured for your right ear with a pre-installed small eartip and medium earloop. You can also configure your headset for your left ear, install a different sized eartip and earloop, or install the headband. Change Headset Configuration 1 Gently pull the eartip from the headset. Rotate the earloop down 90°. NOTE You will feel resistance when rotating the earloop down; this is normal. 90º 2 Remove the earloop from the headset. 3 To wear the headset on the right ear but with a different size earloop or eartip, select the size you want and reinstall in reverse order as shown. Be sure notch in the eartip faces the microphone. 90º Left Earloop Assembly 90º the earloop as shown and insert it 1 Choose the size of earloop that fits most comfortably. Align onto the headset. Be sure the earloop is flat against the headset and rotate the earloop up 90°. 90º 90º 90º 2 Choose the size of eartip that fits most comfortably. Align the eartip with the notch facing the microphone as shown. Press on to attach. 7 Headband Assembly The headset can be rotated for wearing on the left or right ear. NOTE Before installing the headband, remove the eartip and earloop from the headset. 1 Hold the headband so it is aligned to receive the headset as shown and insert the headset into the headband. 2 Rotate the headset up. 3 To optimize the position of the headset, push the headset in so the microphone is close to the corner of your mouth. 8 Position Your Headset When you wear the headset, the microphone should rest as close to your cheek as possible without touching. The microphone can be adjusted inward by the pivoting earpiece to optimize the position of the headset. 1 Slide the headset over and behind your ear and fit the eartip into your ear. 2 Holding the base of the headset, push it in and back towards your ear to allow the pivoting earpiece to bring the microphone close to your mouth. As the base of the headset moves backwards, you will feel soft clicks until the microphone rests close to your cheek. 9 Connect Your Desk Phone This section describes how to connect the base to your desk phone. Connect the Power Plug one end of the power supply into the power jack on the back of the base and the other end into a working power outlet. The Power On LED will be solid white. Charge the Headset = 20. Place the headset in the charge cradle. The charging LED on the base will flash green when charging and turn solid green when the headset is fully charged. Charge for at least 20 minutes prior to the first use. A full charge takes 3 hours. NOTE This product has a replaceable battery. Use only the battery type supplied by Plantronics. 10 Connect and Configure Your Desk Phone There are three setup options for connecting the CS540 to your desk phone. Select one of the following and continue. • Desk phone (standard) • Desk phone + HL10 lifter (sold separately) • Desk phone + EHS cable (sold separately) NOTE If you will be using a standard desk phone set up or a desk phone with an HL10 lifter, continue below. If you will be using the desk phone with an EHS cable, refer to Desk phone plus EHS cable section in this guide. For further installation information refer to the EHS Getting Started guide that came with your EHS cable or at plantronics.com/accessories. Desk Phone (standard) 1 Connect one end of the telephone interface cable to the back of the base. 2 Disconnect the handset coil cord from the desk phone and re-connect it to the telephone interface cable junction box. 3 Connect the remaining end of the telephone interface cable into the open handset port on the desk phone. NOTE Your desk phone handset will continue to work; it’s just hooked up differently. USE NOTE If your phone has a built-in headset port, you should only use the headset port if you will not be using the HL10 lifter. In this configuration, you must press both the headset button on your phone and the call control button on the headset to answer or end calls. 11 Check Configuration and Make a Test Call 1 If your desk phone has a volume control set it to mid-range. 2 Look at the bottom panel of your base and make sure the default settings are correct. Set your desk phone’s volume also. listening volume dial ( ) = 3 and speaking volume dial ( )=3 configuration switch = A desk phone volume = mid-range 3 Remove the handset from desk phone cradle. 4 While wearing your headset, press the call button on the headset. 5 If you do not hear a dial tone, adjust the configuration switch (A-G) until you do. NOTE For most phones, these factory default settings will sound the best. 6 Dial a test call from the desk phone. If needed, fine tune the volume with the headset volume controls. You can also adjust the desk phone speaking and listening volumes on the bottom of the base. 12 Desk Phone plus HL10 Lifter (sold separately) NOTE First follow the steps above for Desk Phone (Standard). 1 Firmly press the handset lifter power cord into the handset lifter jack. USE 2 While wearing your headset, slide the handset lifter arm under the handset until the lifter base touches the side of the phone. 3 Slide the lifter up to where it nearly touches the handset earpiece. 4 Press the call control button on your headset to activate the lifter. 5 If you hear a dial tone the lifter is set correctly and needs no adjustment. 6 Remove the protective strips from the 3 mounting tapes on the underside of the lifter. 7 Gently place the lifter on the desk phone in the pre-determined position. 8 Press firmly to adhere. 13 If You Do Not Hear a Dial Tone 1 If you do not hear a dial tone, raise the lifter height switch to the next highest position. 2 Repeat steps 2 through 5 above as necessary until you hear a dial tone. 3 When you hear a dial tone, secure the lifter as described in steps 6 though 8. Additional Parts (if required) Use extender arm when the handset lifter needs additional stability lifting and returning handset to cradle. Extender Arm 1 Slide extender arm onto lifter. 2 Stabilizers can be shifted left and right. Position stabilizers on outsides of handset to gently grip the phone. 2 1 2 Ringer Microphone Use ringer microphone only when the telephone speaker is not located directly under the handset. 1 Remove cover from ringer microphone jack on back of lifter. 2 Connect ringer microphone plug. 3 Place ringer microphone over phone speaker. Remove adhesive tape and attach. 3 1 2 14 For Nortel Phones Only Desk Phone plus EHS Cable 1 Connect the end of the EHS cable to the base and the other end to the desk phone as described in the EHS Adapter Getting Started guide. NOTE For further installation information refer to the EHS Getting Started guide that came with your EHS cable or at plantronics.com/accessories. 15 Position Your Base The minimum recommended separation between your desk phone and the base is 6 inches. The minimum recommended separation between the base and computer is 12 inches. Incorrect position can cause noise and interference problems. 16 Your Headset Now that you’ve configured your headset and connected your desk phone, read this section to learn about the headset features, how to use the controls and more. Headset Controls 1 2 3 1 Volume/Mute button This table describes volume controls if you wear the headset on the right. The volume controls are opposite if you wear it on the left. Increase the volume Press the volume button up. Decrease the volume Press the volume button down. Mute/unmute a call To mute/unmute the headset, press the volume/mute button in. 2 Call button Place, answer, end a call 3 Headset LED Briefly press the call button. Flashes white when in use. IMPORTANT For your safety, do not use headset at high volumes for extended periods of time. Doing so can cause hearing loss. Always listen at moderate levels. For more information on headsets and hearing visit: plantronics.com/healthandsafety. Talk Time With a single full charge, the CS540 will provide up to 6 hours of talk time. Talk time will be reduced when operating in wideband mode or if the headset is used consistently at a far distance from the base. 17 Battery This product has a replaceable battery. To ensure replacement batteries meet Plantronics high quality standards and for optimal performance, only use replacement batteries provided by Plantronics. Low Battery Warning If you are on a call and the headset battery is critically low, you will hear a repeated single low tone every 15 seconds indicating that the battery is low. You should recharge the headset immediately. If you are not on a call and press the call button, you will hear three low tones if the battery is critically low. You should recharge the headset immediately. Battery Replacement If after long use you notice that a fully charged battery is no longer lasting long enough, you can replace it. 1 Slide battery cover down and remove from headset. 2 With your thumb and index finger, pull the battery out from the attachment clip. 3 With you thumb and index finger, grasp the battery connector and disconnect connector and battery from headset. 4 Install the new battery by reversing the previous steps. Muting Your Headset During a Call To mute/unmute the call, press the volume button in. When mute is activated, the Call/mute LED on the base will be solid red and you will hear three high tones (you will still be able to hear the caller). Adjusting Your Headset Volume Fine-tune your headset volume by pressing the volume/mute button up (increase) or down (decrease) if you wear your headset on the right. If you wear it on the left, it’s opposite: press down to increase the volume and up to decrease the volume. Make set up volume adjustments for the desk phone with the base volume dials. 18 Out of Range Warning Tones If you are on a call and go out of the operating range, you will hear three low tones. You will hear a single mid tone when you are back in range. If you stay out of range, an active call will be suspended. The call will be re-established when you walk back into range. If you remain out of range for more than 5 minutes, the system will drop the call. If you are not on a call and go out of the operating range and then press the call button, you will hear a single tone for the button press and three low tones for the failure to make a link. 19 Your Base Base Phone Button and Switches 1 2 1 Subscription Button 3 The headset and base that came in the box are subscribed (connected) to each other. However, if you wish to use a new headset or need to restore subscription to your current headset, the units can be subscribed to each other by the following two methods. Automatic Secure Subscription With your system idle, docking a headset will automatically subscribe it to the base, making it the primary headset. The Power On/Subscription LED will flash white during subscription process and become solid white when the new subscription is established. Manual Over-the-Air Subscription 1 With your system idle and your headset undocked, press and hold the subscription button on the base for three seconds. The Power on/subscription light will flash white. 2 Press and hold the volume up button on the headset for three seconds until the headset LED turns solid white. When the Power on/subscription LED on the base becomes solid white, the headset and base are subscribed to one another. NOTE If the subscription process times out after two minutes or if the subscription process fails, the subscription LED on the base will go dark for three seconds and then re-illuminate steadily to indicate power is applied to the base. If this occurs, try to re-subscribe the headset again. Ending Subscription If the base is in subscription mode and you want to stop the base from searching for a headset, press the subscription button again. The subscription LED on the base will go dark for three seconds and then re-illuminate steadily to indicate power is applied to the base. Power On/Subscription LED Base Status Power On/Subscription LED Primary headset subscription Flashes white Primary headset subscribed to base Solid white Conference call headset subscription Flashes white Active conference call with guest headsets Flashes white 20 2 Wideband/Narrowband Switch The CS540 has wideband audio, which allows speech to sound clearer and more natural. If your desk phone is capable of wideband audio, set the Wideband-Narrowband switch to green for wideband. Set the switch to red (narrowband) for longer headset battery life or to increase the number of systems that can work in a small area. 3 Auto Answer Switch Auto answer saves a button press to establish the radio link between headset and base. When auto answer is set to red you must press the headset call button to answer an incoming call. When Auto Answer is set to green you can answer a call just by lifting headset from the base. NOTE Auto answer/end capability requires the use of an EHS cable or HL10 lifter. Visit plantronics.com/accessories for more information. 21 Daily Use Place an Outgoing Call 1 Wearing your headset, press the headset call button. 2 Remove the handset from the cradle. You will hear a dial tone. NOTE This step will be automatic if you install a lifter or EHS cable accessory. For a complete list of accessories, visit plantronics.com/accessories. 3 Dial the number using your desk phone. 4 To end the call, press the headset call button and hang up the handset. Answer an Incoming Call 1 Wearing your headset, press the headset call button. 2 Remove the handset from the cradle speak to your caller. NOTE This step will be automatic if you install a lifter or EHS cable accessory. For a complete list of accessories, visit plantronics.com/accessories. 3 To end the call, press the headset call button and hang up the handset. Conference Up to Three Additional Headsets You can conference up to three additional headsets to a call in progress. Join a Conference Call While the base has an active link (on a call), place the guest headset into primary user’s charge cradle (this connects the headset to the base). When the base subscription LED stops flashing white and becomes solid white, the primary headset/user will hear a tone indicating a guest wishes to join the call. Press the primary user’s call button to accept the guest headset within ten seconds or the request is terminated and the guest will hear an error tone in their headset. To connect a guest headset that is of different variety than the primary headset press the base subscription button while the base has an active link. Next, press the guest headset volume up button until the indicator light turns on. When the base subscription LED stops flashing white and remains solid white, the request to join will be heard in the primary user’s headset and the primary user will have to press their call button within 10 seconds to accept the guest Exit a Conference Call Guests headsets can remain as guests through multiple calls. To remove a guest headset, press the guest headset’s call button or dock the primary user’s headset in the charge cradle. A single tone in the master headset will be heard as each guest leaves the call. 22 Troubleshooting Headset My headset is unstable. When you wear the headset, the microphone should rest as close to your cheek as possible without touching. The microphone can be adjusted inward by pivoting the earpiece to optimize the position of the headset. See Position your headset. Talk time performance is significantly degraded even after a full recharge. Battery is wearing out. Call Plantronics at (800) 544-4660 for ordering a replacement battery or contact us at plantronics.com/support. Desk Phone I can’t hear a dial tone in the headset. Make sure your headset is charged. Make sure your headset is subscribed to base. See Subscription button. Press the call button on your headset. If using a lifter, make sure the lifter is lifting the handset high enough to operate the hookswitch; set to a higher setting if necessary. Adjust the configuration switch on the base until a dial tone is heard. Fine tune the listening volume on the headset. If the volume is still too low, adjust the Listening volume dial on the base. I hear static. Make sure there is at least 12 inches between your base and your computer, and 6 inches between your base and your telephone. You may hear static as your headset is going out of range; move closer to the base. The sound is distorted. Lower the Speaking volume dial or Listening volume dial on the base. For most telephones the correct setting is position 3. If your desk phone has a volume control, lower until the distortion disappears. If the distortion is still present, adjust the headset volume control to lower the headset speaker volume. If the distortion persists, lower the Listening volume dial on the base. Make sure there is at least 12 inches between your base and your computer, and 6 inches between your base and your telephone. I hear echo in the headset. Lower the Listening volume dial and Speaking volume dial on the base. For most telephones, the correct setting is position 3. If the audio level is too low in this position, adjust the headset volume control to increase the headset speaker volume. If your speaking volume is too low for your listener in this position, adjust the position of the headset to make sure the microphone is as close as possible to your mouth. Adjust the Configuration switch. The most commonly used position is “A”, which is the default position. People I talk to can hear a buzz in the background. Move the base further away from your phone. If the base power supply is plugged into a power strip, plug it into the wall directly. The handset lifter is installed but does not lift the handset. Be sure the handset lifter power cord is firmly pushed into the handset lifter jack on the base. 23 Congratulations! The product you have just purchased carries the TCO Certified Headsets 2 label. This means that your headset is designed and manufactured according to some of the strictest performance and environmental criteria in the world. The manufacturer of this headset has selected it to be certified to TCO Certified Headsets 2 as a sign of usability, high performance and reduced impact on the natural environment. Products certified to TCO Certified Headsets 2 are specifically designed for limiting the risk for hearing impairment. The headsets have acoustic limit protection to protect the user from sudden “sound-spikes” caused by interference on the telephone lines. Other features of TCO Certified Headsets 2: Ergonomics • Volume control, individual adjustment and adaptation, replaceable parts and quality durability. Energy • Low energy consumption on the charging station. Emissions • Low SAR value. Low electromagnetic fields surrounding the charger. Ecology • Product is designed for recycling. Manufacturer must have a certified environmental management system such as EMAS or ISO 14 001 • Restrictions on o Chlorinated and brominated flame retardants and polymers o Hazardous heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium and lead.
