According to the Wisconsin Arts Board, the state’s nonprofit arts and culture sector alone supports more than 15,000 full-time job equivalents and is responsible for over $418 million in economic activity annually. In 2009, a delegation from NWTC toured a variety of communities dependent on cultural tourism. These towns echoed Americans for the Arts’ conclusions – funding for the arts promotes uniqueness and differentiation, small business development, and increased tourism. The NWTC Artisan and Business Center was created based upon these findings. The Center supports traditional program students wanting a creative outlet to enhance their learning, Residents with time to pursue an interest in the arts and a desire to earn supplemental income, and displaced workers seeking to capitalize on their artistic abilities and reinvent themselves in a challenging job market. The facility began offering credit and non-credit courses in ceramics, quilting, woodturning and entrepreneurial skills training in January 2011. NWTC will form strategic partnerships with arts-focused agencies to foster appreciation for and participation in the arts across Northeast Wisconsin. An NWTC Event Marketing class worked with Service-Learning Team members to plan, market and staff the facility’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, which took place April 29, 2011. The class split into teams to focus on one or two aspects of the event. The grand opening featured speeches by Simon Levin, an internationally renowned potter who helped design the ceramics curriculum; Former Lt. NWTC students involved in project: 17 2010-2011 NWTC Service-Learning~Page 13 General Studies Literacy Green Bay Literacy Green Bay promotes a better standard of living for residents lacking basic English oral or written communication skills. While approximately 90 percent of the organization’s clients are English Language Learning (ELL) students, they also assist a number of native speakers who struggle with reading and writing. During the past year Literacy Green Bay students obtained U.S. citizenship, earned high school level credentials, found employment and entered postsecondary education programs. Many of these goals were met as a result of participation in the organization’s ELL classes, family literacy programming and direct weekly tutoring from one of over 200 volunteers who work to serve more than 650 adult learners annually. Like many nonprofits, Literacy Green Bay works with limited funding; however, they do maintain a substantial collection of resources for use by tutoring matches. Three Oral Communications students and NWTC’s AmeriCorps*VISTA member worked with an Audio Engineering 2 class to expand the organization’s library, creating audio book versions of four beginning level publications. These recordings allow learners to associate spoken words with those written on the page and will help non-native speakers learn the rhythms and sounds of the English language while studying at home. In a separate project, NWTC students in a Macintosh Video Editing-Advanced course worked with Literacy Green Bay to produce three promotional videos. Students created a tour of the facility, a tutor recruitment video featuring current volunteers, and a segment showcasing the diverse population of learners. 2010-2011 NWTC Service-Learning~Page 14 General Studies International Student Service-Learning Internships Course: Psychology Community Partner: Country Kids Inc. Clinic at NWTC continues to provide access to care where there are gaps in the area’s health care system. The clinic offers assistance for low-income, uninsured, underinsured, and medical assistance patients, while enhancing the education of tomorrow’s health care providers. The clinic reduces unnecessary emergency room use. An average of 50 percent of clinic clients would have gone to the ER if the clinic did not exist. The Clinic also helps its patients to save money. An average visit to the clinic costs about $45, which includes the doctor visit, lab tests, interpreter (if needed), and sample medications. This year was a big milestone for the N.E.W. Clinic at NWTC. The Clinic celebrated its fifth year of service on the campus. Over the last five years, more than 17,000 patients have been treated at the clinic. The N.E.W. Clinic takes pride in providing quality service-learning opportunities for students in a variety of NWTC programs. During the 2010-2011 academic year, students from the Clinical Laboratory Technician, Health Care Business Services, Health Information Technology, Associate Degree Nursing, and Respiratory Therapist programs served at the clinic on the NWTC campus. Students provided quality patient care under the guidance of clinic and instructor staff, allowing students to meet Service-Learning requirements for their classes. During the 2010-2011 academic year, 204 students were involved in direct service in the clinic. 2010-2011 NWTC Service-Learning~Page 16 Health Sciences International Student Service-Learning Internships Program: Health Care Business Services Certificate Community Partner: Bellin Hospital Area Served: Brown County Project Description: As a part of a scholarship program, each visiting international student completed an unpaid internship of at least 60 hours related to his/her field of study. The program was piloted in 2007 with the Village of Allouez, a suburb of 15,000 south of Green Bay. Police cadets were assigned to focus on the enforcement of village ordinances in areas with high disturbance frequencies and identify chronic offenders. Since then, the program has expanded to other communities; students were stationed in Gillett, Oconto, Oconto Falls, Pulaski, and Sturgeon Bay during 2010-2011. Students benefit from the program by learning to solve problems, think critically, and apply techniques they have studied in the classroom. Rural communities have struggled to keep pace with more urbanized areas in regard to technology, as it is often not profitable or feasible for companies to provide broadband internet access. Because of this, the “digital divide” developed and exists today among different demographic and geographic areas. Households in rural America are less likely to access the internet than households in urban areas or central cities, regardless of income level. However, households at certain income levels in rural areas are 50 percent less likely to own computers than comparable households in urban areas or central cities. Many rural areas have tried to bridge the digital divide by forming grass roots organizations to meet community needs. The Niagara Community TV Co-op was formed in the late 1950s with the purpose of serving the city of Niagara with cable television service. The co-op is a not-for-profit organization owned by its customers and run by an elected board of members. Major upgrades and expansions have been completed throughout the years to keep up with the growing demand for services; most of these upgrades have been handled in-house, with little help from outside contractors. In 2007, the TV Co-op began a major expansion project which targeted people living outside the city of Niagara. Cable fibers can now be run to the outlying areas to provide for high-speed internet and phone services. Students in the Electrical Power Distribution program traveled to Niagara to assist with the installation of poles needed to upgrade services to rural areas in northern Wisconsin. Eight students set poles, assembled hardware, and strung cable during the first measurable snow in the northern region. One student said, “I learned how to string in messenger wire to the right tension and how to use the clamps to hold the wire on to the pole. Working around real traffic was a plus too because you get to experience the public and how they drive and how to setup barriers for safety. I would strongly suggest having more of these [experiences] in the future. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us to get out of the yard and into the public to learn. This was a great experience for me ,and I hope to have another possible one this year.” 2010-2011 NWTC Service-Learning~Page 25 Trades & Engineering Technologies International Student Service-Learning Internships Program: Organic and Sustainable Agriculture Community Partner: Full Circle Organic Dairy; Tysunekwa Area Served: Brown County Project Description: As a part of a scholarship program, ( Joon-henk-wa) (Oneida Nation) & Park Ridge Organics International students participated in internships related to his/ her area of study.
