• AVCHD is a new standard for recording HD signals onto memory cards, DVD discs, and hard disks. It uses the H.264 standard to achieve more than twice the compression of conventional MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. • AVCHD motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played from a device that does not support the AVCHD standard. • Do not insert a disc containing AVCHD-recorded images into a device that does not support the AVCHD standard. The disc cannot be played on such a device, and it may not be possible to remove the disc once inserted. *In HG (high image quality) mode. 1920 x 1080 full-HD recording with a Panasonic home-use camcorder refers to recording with 1,920 pixels in the horizontal direction and 1,080 pixels in the vertical direction.

“V”48HOURS Furious Filmmaking. Lights! Cameras! Action!
The competing team names give an insight to the characters who enter New Zealand’s largest and most audacious film-making contest; ‘Fractured Radius’, ‘Guerilla Monkeys’, ‘Smashing Pants’, with the 2008 Grand National Winner entering as ‘Team Puppy Guts’.
S
ix years ago the 48 HOURS was a gleam in the eye of its energetic manager Ant Timpson. Panasonic recognised that vision. “We had a belief in the concept and that it was going to take off,” says Panasonic’s James Smith. “It was a worthy idea with legs.” “It seemed to have a really good fit with our professional camera range,” adds Rick Haywood, Panasonic’s Manager of Broadcast Display Systems. 04
A gold level supporter of this exceptional festival since day one, Panasonic sponsor the Best Cinematography Award for each region in New Zealand. The six winners receive Panasonic professional cameras and from there one of the six is selected for best cinematography overall, and is awarded a High end broadcast camera for their efforts. And all of their efforts are Herculean; with just one weekend to take their idea from script to finished film, ready for viewing by audiences and judges. Contrast this with some of the more mainstream movies with production timetables of months if not years, and the achievement is even more impressive. Last year over 600 teams and over 8000 people across six regions in New Zealand competed for a prize pool of over $100,000. Contestants range from first timers through to seasoned professionals. As part of their support, Panasonic
provide the projection equipment to the cinemas to screen the finalist’s entries to thousands of fascinated supporters. “Whether you’re a slick professional team, or just beginning in the industry, we want to be part of it,” says Haywood. Attending finalist screenings is an experience in itself. “You are sitting amongst the teams and getting the sense of competition, and somewhere in the dark you hear the team yelling when their work appears on the screen,” Haywood explains. The 48HOURS is a virtual career springboard for some contestants. The resources and experience they gain here equips them for bigger and better assignments in the industry. Past competitors have contributed their creative skills to iconic Kiwi productions including Sione’s Wedding and the Jackie Brown Diaries. “Eagle Vs Shark’s Taika Waititi enters every year from where-ever in the world he is,” adds Ant Timpson.
More people watched the 48HOURS shorts on television and online than all the other short film festivals in New Zealand combined. Ant Timpson reports with some pride that there were over 1,000,000 views of the 48HOURS last year. “We’ve got great long term support from sponsors like Panasonic – the prizes are phenomenal,” says Ant. “This year is a whole new ball game, as we’re pulling in the younger, energetic, highly crazed individuals from high schools around the country, and you can expect a few new surprises too.”

Panasonic KWN – Kid Witness News. Newsmakers of tomorrow. Making global news today.
Teachers receive brochures in the post every day, but the one that Jonathan O’Neil opened in 2006 would transform the lives of dozens of students at a small North Island school.
I
t was Panasonic’s invitation for Ngatea Primary to join other New Zealand schools to enter the KWN (Kid Witness News) programme and produce a short documentary. “I’d been wanting to set up video production at the school and with KWN providing camera equipment to make the documentaries, it was just the way to achieve that,” explains Jonathan. While children enjoy interacting with TVs and computer screens, when you put them behind a camera, they have the opportunity to grow. That’s the thinking behind Panasonic’s KWN program which came to New Zealand in 2005. Launched in the USA in 1989 by Panasonic, KWN is a global education 06
initiative designed to encourage creativity and teamwork among school children through video production. Quite simply, it’s about kids making the news. Ngatea’s first entry into the 2006 contest was called ‘Polluted Piako’ and looked at the levels of pollution in their local river. It won the New Zealand competition, taking the thrilled team (including parents and teacher) to Malaysia for the Asia Pacific Regional finals (pictured above). “We made it to the top two in Asia Pacific and were flown to New York to receive the International Award against winners from six continents,” Jonathan continues. “Everyone at school got fired up for KWN and wanted to get involved. The free equipment to make the video really set us up and kicked it along in the school.” Ngatea School, whose competition included international schools that were larger than the town of Ngatea itself, entered 4 documentaries in 2007. They won the NZ contest and were flown to Singapore for the Regionals. ‘Eco Energy’

a documentary about a local family whose home runs on renewable energy won the ‘Best Artistic Award.’ “In the four years that New Zealand’s been competing in KWN we’ve had four winners including Avondale, Kauri Park and Ngatea School,” says Panasonic Marketing Manager Chris Key. In 2008 over 8,000 children from 617 schools in 25 countries and regions participated in KWN. “KWN lets me teach my philosophy – of getting kids out of the classroom doing the real learning outdoors,” explains Jonathan. He reports that one of Ngatea’s 2006 winners is determined to make a career in film production. Keeping it in the family, the younger sister of the 2006
winner produced a video on Kiwi conservation that placed second in KWN in 2007. Spurred on by their KWN success, Jonathan is now teaching Digital Technology skills to all the classes at Ngatea. Using their Panasonic equipment, the school is also producing a short (5 minute) drama series that will screen on Central TV’s Freeview this year. As you read this, 2009 entries are underway at schools across six continents. Tokyo hosts the six finalist teams for the Award ceremony in July. A small school in Ngatea has KWN in their sights.

HS200
3MOS Sensor
TM200
The HS200 and TM200 feature three of Panasonic's new 1/4.1-inch 3,050,000-pixel MOS sensors. One sensor is used for each of the three primary colors (red, green, and blue), with each sensor containing an effective 2,070,000 motion-image pixels, making it full-HD size. The three sensors team up to capture all the color information in the scene (see diagram) and produce full-HD (1920 x 1080) images. Virtually no light is lost, so images are rich and vivid. With its total of 9,150,000 pixels (including an effective 6,210,000 motionimage pixels), the 3MOS System captures a huge amount of visual data, which translates into accurate, true-to-life images with vivid color and stunning detail. And thanks to 1,080 lines of horizontal resolution, detail is exceptional. This advanced system uses the same approach as the 3-sensor systems that were first developed

New Leica Dicomar Lens
The HD camcorders also introduce a new highperformance Leica lens in which both resolution and contrast have been improved by refinements to our low-dispersion lens and aspherical lens. A multi-coating process applied to all lens surfaces helps suppress ghosts and flaring, so you get sharp, crisp images even in strong outdoor lighting. The superb rendering ability of this advanced camcorder lens makes it ideal for capturing expressive full-HD images. *Leica is a registered trademark of Leica

Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) Panasonic's advanced O.I.S. helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot, for both motion and still images. This system uses gyrosensors to detect even tiny amounts of hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts the optical axis to compensate – all at an astounding 4,000 times per second. It also covers approximately 3 times the stabilization area of our previous SD9 model. Because the system is optical, there's only minimal loss of image quality even when viewed on a large-screen TV. In addition, to shoot high-resolution still images, the normal O.I.S. Mode 1 is joined by an O.I.S. Mode 2*, which has a higher stabilization capability. The O.I.S. corrective lens shifts and stabilizes the image the instant that the shutter button is pressed, to enable greater precision in stabilization. You get all the beauty and minimal blurring.

Ultra Zoom
This 70x zoom lens has the power you need to take dramatic close-ups or get remarkable shots of even distant subjects. But with longdistance zoom shots, even a tiny bit of hand shake has a huge effect on picture quality. That's where optical image stabilizer comes in. Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. shifts a corrective lens as you shoot to help eliminate the effects of hand shake, so you get clear, sharp shots even at high zoom levels. It's an essential feature for getting the most out of this incredible zoom lens.

iA (Intelligent Auto)
With the H80 and S26, you can use the iA function whether you're shooting motion or still images. In iA mode the camera detects the shooting situation and automatically activates whichever functions – such as Advanced O.I.S., Face Detection, and Intelligent Scene Selector – will deliver the optimal results. Forget about bothersome settings during important scenes and trust iA to give you the optimal shots.
O.I.S. ON
Inside or out, you can adjust the LCD brightness.
High-performance image processing.
The LCD brightness can be adjusted manually to suit the surroundings. In Auto mode, the LCD brightness is adjusted automatically in 16 smooth steps, depending on the surroundings. In darker rooms it adjusts to a lower brightness, making it easier to frame the shot. Outside, it adjusts to around twice the brightness for easy viewing even on sunny days.
The Pure Colour Engine converts the CCD output signal from a complementary color signal into an RGB signal at an early stage and extracts the lowfrequency luminance component f ro m t h e R G B s i g n a l . T h i s innovative engine also achieves truly superb color reproduction for high-zoomed pictures.

The SW21 is designed to resist damage even if dropped from a height of up to 1.2 m. We fortified the outer body casing, making it thicker to improve rigidity and strength. Inside, we provided an intermediate resin chassis to cushion and protect the main circuit board and lens.
Take the SW21 underwater as deep as 2.0 m and get some great video shots in the pool or ocean. Swim along with tropical fish, capture shots of a beautiful coral reef, or get action footage of a friend snorkeling. Waterproofing also means you can shoot in the rain or snow with no worries.
A dustproof design keeps t h e S W 2 1 s a fe e v e n i f handled with dirty hands or used in a place with swirling dust. The SW21 is protected against sand too, so you can take it to the beach with no worries. And it's waterproof, so if the body gets dirty you can simply wash it off with water.
