‘Each of the individual parts is designed by Spendor. For The plastic material some we have our own tooling, and they are made used for the cones is specifically to our requirements. But a number of things we do supplied in flat actually make in-house now. All of the plastic cones are made squares with no here. We had tremendous trouble finding an outside company directional grain who could do this properly, because we use materials that pattern. ‘If you use are not run-of-the-mill. ‘You are looking here at the heart of material that comes the loudspeaker. These components determine what the off a roll and has got loudspeaker will sound like. If they aren’t right, there is a natural “set” in it, nothing you can do subsequently, with crossovers or cabinets you will find that it or anything else, to get the sound right. ‘We still say that our doesn’t lose drivers are hand-made. As Philip Swift then start to sacrifice technical performance points out, if you imagine trying to stand on a cone, you and sound quality. ‘We tend to build drive units in batches. can see that the deeper the flare, the more rigid it will be. Our girls who assemble drive units can do every individual stage. It’s more satisfying for some one to build a complete Plug Effect drive unit.’ The Right Glue One of the crucial stages is gluing the cone to the surround. A glue-dispensing machine is used to give precisely the right quantity of adhesive, and an activator spray is used to make the adhesive cure correctly. ‘The adhesive can have a dramatic influence on the sound of the driver. You can’t just pick from an industrial catalogue the one that seems to have the best specification and is quickest and easiest to use, because it might not measure well or sound very good. The adhesive is a transmission interface between the surround and the cone. Some of these materials are quite difficult to bond, because they are waxy.’ Having the ability to make loudspeaker cones in-house is a huge advantage when it comes to trying new ideas and building prototypes. ‘We’ve got on-site facilities for experimenting. If you wanted to
A small but vital feature of Spendor bass/midrange drivers is a phase plug, the bullet-shaped centre projection from the front of the magnet pole piece in the centre, which is shaped to complement the profile of the cone and helps to smooth the response of the drive unit at high frequencies. ‘It’s something that has a very significant effect on the drivers, and it’s surprising how few companies actually use them. It was there in vestigial form even in the original BC1. The effect is something you can measure very easily. ‘In the new 15cm drive unit for the Spendor SA1, the frequency response is remarkably good, up to almost 10kHz. So we are able to cross that speaker over at a very high frequency. We don’t have the crossover down at the usual 2kHz, which is generally the worst area of operation for the tweeter, and it’s also right in the most sensitive areas in terms of brightness, harshness and perception of detail. ‘We introduced phase plugs into the

Consistency Completed drive units are tested and selected into matching pairs before they are assembled into the loudspeakers. However, this pair matching is a much easier process now than it was in the old days of the BC1 and the LS3/5A. ‘If you go back to those days, there was a lot of variation between drivers and it was very difficult to get two drivers that were very much the same. What we’ve really focused on at Spendor over the last few years, is finding engineering solutions which give us very consistent drive units. As they are manufactured, they are guaranteed to be very close to a reference standard, and we’ve made major progress during this last couple of
own precision-tapped inductors which are assembled, along with the other components, onto high-quality circuit boards that have through-hole plating to give the best conductivity in the signal path through the crossover. The track layout also provides a multi-way edge connector for testing. In the early days, when drive units were more variable in their characteristics, tapped inductors were used for matching adjustSoldering the lead-out wires…. ments. Spendor still uses them, but for different reasons. ‘With the circuit topology we use in our crossovers, having the facility to design the inductors like this gives us tremendous control over the way we shape the frequency response of the crossover network, and has a very powerful influence on getting it perfectly balanced through the crossover region. It’s quite fascinating that with an analogue crossover, you can still almost bend or distort things in an artistic form. Whereas with digital crossovers (DSP) you can think, well I’ll have this here, that there and so on, but it doesn’t automatically blend them all in a nice balanced way for you – one section starts and the other stops, and there may be a bit in between! With analogue, it’s automatically smooth.’
The Cabinets

years. ‘With some of the latest drive units we have designed, you could take any two and they would already be way within what constitutes a perfectly matched pair. In the most general terms, we’re talking about matching within 1dB. However, we can then pair two units with variations of only 0.1 or 0.2dB. Even amplifiers are no better matched than that! We think that’s quite an achievement.’ Like all but a handful of the world’s quality speaker manufacturers, Spendor buys in its tweeters from Scandinavia, but crossovers are built in-house. For these, Spendor winds its
Just as its drive unit development can be traced back to the roots of the company, so Spendor’s cabinet designs could be said to have evolved from the early models. However, things have moved on from the old BBC concept of using, essentially, a thin-walled cabinet with damping to move the inevitable resonances down in frequency and so ‘out of harm’s way’. ‘In our speakers today, you have first of all a really rigid cabinet structure. People do want the benefits of a clean, controlled, detailed and articulate yet weighty bottom end. You achieve that best with a more rigid wall to the cabinet. With our dynamic damping, the clever thing is that the damping material is actually clamped between the drive unit chassis and the cabinet. So behind each driver is a visco-elastic damping material, actually a rigid material, which

Feature Article: A visit to the Spendor factory in Hailsham (continued) has two benefits. It clamps the drive units so that you don’t get any micro-vibration, which can tend to blur very fine detail and make the sound just a little bit coarser or hazier than it should be. And any energy which is flowing in the cabinet, when it reaches that point, is dissipated silently into heat. ‘We felt that this was quite an innovative element when we first came up with it for the S Series, because instead of having to apply damping all over the cabinet walls, strategically placed modern polymertype materials – which are also rigid materials, they don’t have to be Work in progress – somewhere in really soft and flexible – this group of development are just perfect for getting samples lurks another forthrid of the energy.’ This coming model approach avoids problems of energy storage in the cabinet. ‘If you make a cabinet four inches thick, what you’re going to do is push the coloration down to very low frequencies, but you are still going to hear it. Even if you do push it right down to tens of Hertz, you are still going to get second and third harmonics of that. So getting rid of it, that’s the answer!’
the future so much in terms of making big ranges of speakers that meet every size and physical requirement. It’s much more that we are aiming to create distinctive individual products, that are hopefully a little bit clever and a little bit different. Obviously the classic speakers have retained their 1970s appearance, quite deliberately. Then we have the modern but relatively understated look of the S-Series loudspeakers. Now, with the SA1 mini-monitor and the ST we have far more dramatic products in modern finishes, and with the ST the potential for actually customising. ‘A loudspeaker has got to have a little bit of personality and character. If you wring that totally out of the product, it’s not very interesting, and that applies to electronics also. But it’s not something you ought to be immediately able to put your finger on, because that would be a problem coloration.’ ‘However, Spendor’s whole basis is performance and engineering. And out of that, fabulous-sounding products that appeal to a very broad spectrum. It has continued to amaze me how strong the reputation of Spendor is all over the world, and if you interfere with it and try to modify it too quickly, you do that at your peril! I think we are starting to move now, but move in a positive way, which retains all of the good things which people value’.
Testing is an important aspect of speaker production. In routine quality control checks, frequency response and impedance measurements are run on completed speakers. ‘There is a set procedure for testing each loudspeaker. But because the crossover has been tested, and the drive units have been tested and calibrated, we know for a certainty that when we put them together, everything will be fi ne. The only thing that really can go wrong is if you have wires the wrong way round. Once in a blue moon it happens, and that’s why you always do the test.’
A Clever Future Needless to say, though, Philip Swift spends more time looking ahead than looking back on past glories. ‘We don’t see

Japan News: JVC develops Super Hi-Vision projector chip – 17x Full HD resolution! - 19 May 2008
Sound and Vision Expo 2008
(We have reported on developments in next generation Super HD formats in our May 2008 edition. In addition, JVC has recently made the following announcement:) It's just under a year since we brought you news of the work being done by Japanese broadcaster NHK to prepare for Super HiVision TV, offering many times the resolution of current HD TV systems. Now JVC has announced the development of its latest projector chip, offering more than 17 times the resolution of current Full HD systems, and forming the final link in the Super Hi-Vision broadcast/viewing chain. The 1.75in 8K4K D-ILA chip is claimed to be the world's first single display device able to handle Super Hi -Vision. It offers a resolution of 35 megapixels – 8192x4320 pixels, against 1920x1080 for current HD TV systems – meaning the 7680x4320-pixel resolution of Super Hi-Vision is well within its capabilities. The new system is four times the resolution of the 4K2K digital cinema standard already available in JVC's DLA-SH4K pro-use projector. As well as being used for Super Hi-Vision, JVC says the chip will play a part in the development of what the company calls "the ultimate in imaging technology: ultra-realistic 3D displays." And this amazing picture quality is going to need a sound system to match. NHK is currently considering 22.2-channel capability.

Hi Jeandre. I have received the (HDMI) cable (Furutec h HDMI-N1 V1.3) and install ed it on my Denon DVD – connected to my 40” Samsung LCDTV.
The noise generated through my power s up ply was totally eliminated. The small amount of noise still present is “generated” through the signal cabl e.
I had my components connected at the same ti me as the Furutech HDMI s o was abl e to make quick changes to see quality differences with the di fferent DVDs. Thes e di fferences are very clear es pecially in the vibrancy of the colours, the components hav e a more bl and appearanc e whereas the Furutech colours were sharp and in your face, es pec ially on a DVD such as “CARS” PIXAR where they use hi gh contras ti ng colours .
