An X indicates a known bug or limitation. Where appropriate, a workaround is provided. n A note provides important related information, reminders, recommendations, and strong suggestions. c A caution means that a speciÞc action you take could cause harm to your computer or cause you to lose data. w Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A A warning describes an action that could cause you physical harm. Follow the guidelines in the manual or on the unit itself when handling electrical equipment. Symbols and Conventions 6 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes Enhancements in Release 7.0.2 This section describes enhancements added to Release 7.0.2. See Avid Media Station WhatÕs New for Release 7.0 for details on new features for Release 7.0. Improved Import Settings Controls The import setting ÒImport sequential ÞlesÓ has been renamed to ÒAutodetect sequential ÞlesÓ which is now set by default. With this option set, when a Þle selected for import is part of a sequence of Þles, the entire sequence of Þles is automatically imported. If the option is not set, only the selected Þle is imported. Graphics Import Enhancements The previous import options in the Import Settings dialog box called ÒForce to Fit ScreenÓ and ÒMaintain Aspect RatioÓ have been replaced by the following three options: ¥ Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect: Use CCIR, non-square creates a fullscreen image from the import, scaling the graphic if necessary. For example, any graphic created using a 3:4 aspect ratio, including one with square pixel dimensions of 640x480 or one with nonsquare pixel dimensions of 720x486, will be imported as a fullscreen image. Larger or smaller images, such as a 320x240 image, are also scaled to Þt the screen. ¥ Enhancements in Release 7.0.2 Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect: Maintain, square maintains the aspect ratio of the graphic as well as its relative size on screen. If the graphic has dimensions smaller than full-screen, or does not have a 3:4 aspect ratio, empty regions of the screen are Þlled with alpha channel for keying over a background. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 7 For example, a square graphic with square pixel dimensions of 320x320 will be imported as a square that occupies roughly a quarter of the screen, centered. ¥ Aspect Ratio, Pixel Aspect: Maintain & Resize, square scales the imported graphic to Þll the frame, while maintaining the visual square pixel aspect ratio of the graphic (in other words, without distorting the visual dimensions of the graphic). For example, a graphic with the 3:4 aspect ratio of the screen, regardless of its size, will be scaled to full screen. A square shaped graphic, however, will be scaled until the vertical dimension reaches full height of the screen, while the remaining areas on the left and right of the horizontal dimension are Þlled with black. Import of small, square pixel graphics has also been improved. In 7.0.1, when importing a small square pixel graphic the black border areas would not be keyed out, so the underlying video would not show through the key. Now, when you import a graphic with alpha that has black borders due to importing a small square pixel image, the border regions are automatically created as alpha channel. Enhancement to Restoring Media with the Avid/Mezzo Archiver Software You can now restore media Þles from tape using the Avid/Mezzo Archiver software while the Avid Media Station is running Ñ that is, without having to close and then restart the application during a restore. Previously when you used the Avid/Mezzo Archiver to restore media Þles from tape, if the Media Station application was running it would attempt to read each of the temporary Þles created by the Avid/Mezzo Archiver software during the process and would display an error message repeatedly. You no longer need to close the application to avoid this condition. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Enhancements in Release 7.0.2 8 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes Enhancements to System Utilities New versions of the Avid System Test and Avid System Utility applications are automatically installed in the Utilities folder with the Easy Install option. These utilities allow you to view a proÞle of the Avid system conÞguration and run various system-level tests. Enhancements with Release 7.0.2 include: ¥ c Avid System Test version 1.3 adds support for testing Revision A of the Mandrill 2D Effects Board, and includes improvements to the ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test. The ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test is does not work correctly when working in PAL mode, and must be turned off before testing a PAL system. For information on turning the ÒPlayback Alladin PIPÓ test off in the Avid System Test utility, see the Avid System Test Setup and UserÕs Guide. ¥ Avid System Utility version 3.3.3 allows you to view alphanumerical rather than a hexidecimal representation of the board revisions for the Advanced JPEG Board (Janus), 3D Effects interface (Boa/Python), the 2D Effects Board (Mandrill). You can also view HUB revision for the Video Base Board (Targa 2000), the Serial Digital card (D1 daughter card), and the Advanced JPEG interface (Avid gasket). For information on using these utilities, see the Avid System Test Setup and UserÕs Guide. Enhancements in Release 7.0.2 Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. Compatibility with Prior Releases Compatibility issues with prior releases of the Media Composer products consist of the following: ¥ c Projects and bins created in Media Composer products with Releases 5.01 and later can be used with Media Station Release 7.0.2. However, projects and bins created in Media Composer products Release 4.5 or earlier cannot be used with Media Station Release 7.0.2. Media Composer products Release 5.x users folders are compatible with Media Station Release 7.0.2 and can be brought forward. However, once you open a user setting in Media Station Release 7.0.2, you cannot return those elements to a Media Composer product with a version earlier than 7.0. ¥ Media digitized in releases earlier than Release 7.0 cannot be used with Release 7.0 without Þrst converting it. Earlier releases use Media File Manager (MFM), and releases starting with Release 7.0 use Media Stream Manager (MSM). See ÒRedigitizing Your MaterialÓ in Chapter 8 of the Avid Media Station Getting Started Guide for digitizing instructions. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Compatibility with Prior Releases 18 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes You can bring bins forward from Releases 6.5 and 5.5 to Release 7.0.2; media must be converted by using the Conversion Tool in the Utilities folder. This utility works on a per-folder basis for bringing 6.X MediaFiles media into OMFI MediaFiles media. The Conversion Tool does not enable Release 7.0.2 bins and media to be brought backward to Release 6.5.3. Backward compatibility is available by doing an OMFI export out of Media Station Release 7.0.2, and importing these Þles back into Release 6.5.3. OMF Þle transfer is supported only if both the sending and the receiving systems are running OMF version 2.0. For more information about media conversion, see ÒMedia Conversion ToolÓ in the Avid Media Station WhatÕs New for Release 7.0. n c AVR 70 and AVR 75 Þles created within Media Composer product Release 7.0.2 cannot be played on Release 6.5.3 systems. Also, OMF export of rolling and crawling titles is not supported in OMF version 2.0. Consider Þnishing any projects digitized on Media Composer products Release 6.5 or earlier before upgrading to Release 7.0.2. If you upgrade now, make time to redigitize or convert all your media. ¥ Site settings from Media Composer products prior to Release 7.0 are compatible with Media Station Release 7.0.2 and can be brought forward. However, once you open a project using the site settings, you cannot return the settings to a previous version. ¥ Customers upgrading to Release 7.0.2 might notice that some options that were listed in the Console window for prior releases are no longer displayed. This is because a number of features that were previously options now come standard with the system. Compatibility with Prior Releases Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 19 Broadcast Product Compatibility Media Composer products Release 7.0.2 bins and media are not compatible with Avid broadcast products. Additionally, Avid broadcast bins and media are not supported with Media Composer products Release 7.0.2. If you require bin and media compatibility with Avid broadcast products, you should continue to use Media Composer products Release 6.5.3. Bin and media compatibility exists between Media Composer products Release 6.5.3 and broadcast products as shown in the following table. Standalone Products Media Server Client Products NewsCutter¨ 3.8.1 or earlier NewsCutter 4.0 or earlier Single-Channel AirPlay¨ 3.7.3 or 3.9 or earlier AirPlay 4.0 or earlier Multi-Channel AirPlay 3.7.3 or 3.9.1 or earlier Media Recorder¨ 4.0 or earlier If you purchased Media Composer products Release 7.0.2 and require broadcast product compatibility, contact your Avid representative or Avid Customer Support at 800-800-AVID (2843). Transferring Files Media Station Release 7.0.2 includes the new version 3.0 Transfer Tool. Version 3.0 of the Transfer Tool must be present on both the sending and receiving systems to enable Þle transfer. Deleting Slates, Takes, and Script Marks The Media Station online help describes the deletion of slates, takes, and script marks from the script window using script integration. You cannot undo deletion of slates, takes, and script marks. To restore one of these elements after deletion, follow the instructions in the online help for adding slates to the script window, adding takes to slates, or applying script marks to takes. Interpolating Position for Script Integration Interpolate Position is a new option in the Script menu and in Script Settings. This option allows you to match a clip to a take, and to see where a particular line in the script would appear in the clip footage. When you turn on Interpolate Position, the length of the take in the script is matched to the length of the clip in the Source monitor. The position indicator in the Source monitor corresponds to wherever you click in the take. If you set a script mark in the take, the portions of the take on either side of the script mark are matched to the portions of the clip on either side of the IN mark in the Source monitor. For more information about scripts and script marks, see ÒScript marksÓ in the online help index. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. When the Destination Format is MSM Media, the defaults are already selected. 7. Click Convert to convert the media Þles. A progress bar appears. 8. When the conversion is completed, select another folder to convert or click Quit to exit the tool. The Media Conversion tool creates a log Þle in a folder labelled Logs inside the Conversion folder in the Utilities folder. This log of the converted Þles can be read using any word processing or text editing software package such as SimpleText. Documentation Changes Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 43 Tips and Guidelines For Media File Conversion The following are some tips and restrictions to keep in mind: ¥ All the Þles must be in either MSM or MFM format. Do not mix Þles of different types in the Source Folder for conversion. ¥ The media drive where you create the Destination Folder for the converted Þles must have at least as much available storage space as the size of your Source Folder containing the original Þles. ¥ Consider using a media drive for the Destination Folder for the converted Þles that does not already have an OMFI MediaFiles folder in order to allow the system to automatically create an OMFI MediaFiles folder for the newly converted Þles. ¥ If a number of errors occur in the conversion process for no apparent reason, consider splitting the source Þles up into smaller groups in separate folders, and convert the folders one at a time. ¥ Most precompute media Þles for effects wonÕt convert. ¥ If an audio Þle in the AIFF format does not convert properly, consider reimporting the audio Þle in the SD II format, and re-editing the Þle into your sequence. ¥ After converting, relink all the master clips Þrst, before relinking sequences. ¥ Occasionally clips edited into a sequence from other projects or clips that have had their tape names modiÞed will not convert properly. AudioSuite Plug-Ins and Time Compression/Expansion Appendix A of the Avid Media Station User Guide states that you should not use any Digidesign AudioSuite Plug-ins that use time compression because the output would have a different sample duration than the original Þle. You can use the time compression/expansion plug-ins as long as you perform an audio mixdown on the results. The reasons for this are described below. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Documentation Changes 44 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes The problem stems from the fact that the length of the audio segment does not change. SpeciÞcally, when performing time expansion, the audio portion that is expanded past the length of the audio segment is truncated. Time compression on the other hand, pads out the remaining length of the Þle with silence. If you use time compression (i.e., to speed up the audio) then you usually want to trim out the silence. However, if the time compression AudioSuite effect should ever become unrendered, rerendering the effect reintroduces the silence. This means that you would have to recreate the effect from scratch. Therefore, we recommmend performing an audio mixdown of the time compression effect before continuing editing. Importing Audio Files to Pro Tools or AudioVision This section describes how to import audio Þles to Pro Tools¨ and AudioVision. Media Composer products support both AIFF and Sound Designer II (SD2) audio Þle formats. If you know that you will be exporting audio Þles to Pro Tools or AudioVision, make sure you use SD2 format. Exporting SD2 Audio Files to AudioVision If all your audio Þles are in SD2 format, use the following procedure: 1. Choose Export from the File menu. 2. Choose OMFI Composition. 3. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The Media Station application now displays a message to notify the user when updating the MSM databases. ✔ Previously, the option ÒAutodetect Sequential FilesÓ in the Import Settings dialog box caused the Single Frame Import setting ÒFormat: Media FileÓ to be ignored when chosen. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, OMF exports of retimes and varispeeds got the correct speed but did not receive the direction. This problem has been Þxed. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 51 ✔ Previously, the last frame of a digital cut contained the Þrst Þeld twice on the tape. This has been Þxed. The last frame of a digital cut now consists of the two correct Þelds of the frame. ✔ In 7.0.1, importing a shot log that contained Ink Numbers might create master clips that would not batch digitize. This problem is Þxed. ✔ Previously, importing a shot log using either of the two merge options (Merge with known sources and automatically create subclips or Merge with known master clips) might cause the message ÒNot enough adjacent material to create the transitionÓ to appear erroneously during the import. In some cases, one or more of the master clips that were selected before the import might become corrupted by the operation; you might notice error messages when you tried to open, display or save the bin. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, importing a shot log that contains a syntax error might cause the import routine to get stuck displaying the same error message repeatedly and not progress through the input Þle. An example of such a syntax error is the use of spaces instead of a tab to separate columns in an ALE Þle. In this case, an error message will come up indicating that there was a problem reading the data from that line in the Þle. Choosing OK will cause the same error message to be displayed again (although it will incorrectly indicate that it is now reading the next line in the Þle). Choosing Abort will stop the import, but choosing Quit will hang the system. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, in Þlm projects, splicing certain clips from the source monitor to the record monitor might yield a CM_OFFSET_OUT_OF_RANGE error. This bug occurred when working in 35mm Þlm projects (4-perf or 3-perf). If an audio-only clip that contained locators was loaded into the source monitor and edited into the record monitor, the error CM_OFFSET_OUT_OF_RANGE might appear and the edit operation would not be performed. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, the AutoSequence operation did not properly handle AutoSynced subclips. Using AutoSequence on subclips that were cre- Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Fixed Bugs 52 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ated by AutoSync would either fail to generate a sequence at all, or the sequence that is generated would contain timecodes that were derived from the audio timecodes on the subclips rather than the video timecodes. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, when selecting tapes in the digitize tool or batch digitize, if there was no Video Input tool setting with the same name as the tape, or one labeled ÒDefaultÓ or ÒUntitledÓ, the input values were all set to the default values, including the input channel, which was set to ÒCompositeÓ. The work-around for this problem was to save a setting named ÒDefaultÓ, which speciÞed the preferred input mode, as well as any custom parameter values. Now, as before, the system will Þrst look for a setting with the same name as the tape, then for a setting named ÒDefaultÓ. If neither of these exist, the system creates an ÒUntitledÓ setting which speciÞes the default input parameters, but leaves the input channel set the way it was. n Fixed Bugs A side effect of this change is that it is no longer valid to save a setting named ÒUntitledÓ. You may still use a setting named ÒDefaultÓ to customize input parameters, if, for example, you have a series of tapes that require a similar adjustment. ✔ Previously, changing audio output via AvidDroid garbled dB display in the audio output window. If you attempted to change the audio output of a sequence via the AvidDroid's audio output dial, the dB display would become garbled. This would only occur while the sequence was being played. This problem is Þxed. ✔ In 7.0.1, you could not map menu functions to the AvidDroid buttons, as you can on the other controllers. This has been Þxed. ✔ In 7.0.1, you could only ÒOKÓ or ÒCancelÓ any of the deck conÞguration dialogs by using the mouse. Now you can use the Return or Enter key to ÒOKÓ the dialogs, or the Escape key to ÒCancelÓ them. Now you can close deck conÞguration dialogs using the Return or Enter key. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 53 ✔ Previously, the drop/non-drop option was being presented to users as a deck setting in PAL projects, even though these options are irrelevant. Now, if you are using a PAL project, the popup menu is disabled. ✔ Previously, long audio-only sequences would sometimes drift using VLAN. If you did not have a reference going into the VLAN, the audio might drift on long digitized clips. We now test to see if the VLAN or direct-connect deck has reference before we digitize. ✔ Previously, MUI speed settings were not persistent after quitting and re-launching the application. This has now been Þxed. ✔ Previously, the deck RECORD light would illuminate when digitizing from a deck using VLAN. In order to attain frame accuracy when digitizing with VLAN, we were simulating an edit (to get proper coincidence), with all tracks explicitly disabled. However, some decks would still illuminate their RECORD light even if all tracks are disabled. This has been Þxed by using the VLAN Rehearse command, which simulates an edit and does not illuminate the RECORD button. ✔ Previously, if you armed a higher-numbered video track for a sequence in the Digital Cut tool, and then changed to a sequence with fewer video tracks, none of the visible video tracks would be armed (e.g., arm V3 on a sequence; change to a sequence with 1 video track; V1 is not armed). This has been Þxed so that switching to a sequence with fewer video tracks will cause the Þrst video track to be armed. ✔ Previously, digitizing with Fostex D-20B, Sony BVU or BVH decks would generate ÒSBV_Unknown_CommandÓ exceptions when digitizing. These decks were not on the deck supported list for Media Station 7.0 or earlier, but some customers were able to use them with Media Station 6.5. However, when digitizing with 7.0.1 and one of these decks, ÒSBV_Unknown_CommandÓ exceptions occur. It turns out that these decks do not recognize the Preroll Sense command in the Sony SBV protocol. This was Þxed through a software change and new machine templates. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Fixed Bugs 54 Fixed Bugs Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ✔ Previously, controlling a Tascam DA-60 MK II would generate communications faults. This deck was not on the deck supported list for Media Station 7.0 or earlier, but some customers were able to use the deck with Media Station 6.5. However, when controlling this deck with 7.0.1, occasional communications faults would occur. This deck occasionally generates a software overrun error. This has been Þxed by immediately resending any command when a software overrun error has been detected. ✔ Previously, controlling a Tascam DA-98 would generate communications faults. This deck was not on the deck supported list for Media Station 7.0 or earlier, but some customers were able to use the deck with Media Station 6.5. However, when controlling this deck with 7.0.1, occasional communications faults would occur. This deck occasionally generates a checksum error. This has been Þxed by immediately resending any command when a software overrun error has been detected. ✔ Previously, track arming on Sony D2 (DVR-18, DVR-20, DVR-28) decks didnÕt work properly. This has been corrected by updating the machine templates for these decks. ✔ Previously, a sequence that began with Þller might have all of its clips play as Òwrong format.Ó If the sequence began with Þller and the elements of the sequence were 2 Þeld resolutions and the compression tool was set to a 1 Þeld resolution, then the clips in the sequence would play as wrong format. This is also true for sequences containing 1 Þeld resolutions with the compression tool set to a 2 Þeld resolution. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, exported QuickTime video levels were not using the correct color range. When exporting to a QuickTime movie using a nonAvid codec, the color levels in the resulting QuickTime Þle would be in the CCIR range (16-235) rather than the full RGB range (0-255). This has been Þxed. ✔ In 7.0.1, an attempt to mute or solo a track using the green mute or solo buttons from the Automation Gain Record Tool would sometimes just Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 55 ßash yellow (solo) momentarily and then immediately revert back to green (normal). This prevented the user from pre-selecting the track states before initiating an automation gain recording. This problem is Þxed. ✔ Previously, if your Import options were set such that alpha is ignored on import, the Title Tool would fail during regenerate because it didnÕt override that setting and, instead, attempted to save and then import the title without alpha. This problem is Þxed by having the Media Composer ignore the default options setting when regenerating titles. ✔ There was a bug which caused the system to crash when you attempted to render audio dissolves with SDII media. The problem was in very low-level code which manages memory, and is now Þxed. ✔ There was a bug with video mixdown that included a uniform source, such as Þller (black) or a single graphic image imported such as a slide. When such a source was included in the material to be mixed down, sometimes the resulting frames would all be from the uniform source. So if you mixed down a sequence that started with Þller (black), the entire mixdown would be black. This bug is Þxed. ✔ Previously, Multigroup quad playback would revert to full-screen. In some cases, quad playback of Multigroup clips reverted to full-screen playback when clips had different starting timecodes. This worked in 6.5.x releases. The problem arose when 7.0.1 tried to support multiple resolutions in Multigroup. For this CPR, multiple resolution support may not work. We are investigating if we can support multiple resolutions in Multigroup in a future CPR. ✔ In 7.0.1, it was very difÞcult to shuttle a deck at speeds below 1x play using the shuttle control in the digitize tool and deck controller windows. This has been Þxed. ✔ If you run the board diagnostic portion of the Avid System Test in PAL mode, an invalid failure no longer occurs if you select the Playback Genieª PIP test located under the PCI 3D Effects Board. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Fixed Bugs 56 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes Bugs Fixed in Release 7.01 The following problems or limitations documented in previous release notes were corrected in Release 7.0.1. Additional bugs have also been Þxed. The most recently Þxed bugs appear at the beginning of the list. Fixed Bugs ✔ Previously, when you used the A and S keys or the arrow keys to ÒGo to Next EditÓ or ÒGo to Previous EditÓ in the Timeline, the position bar occasionally skipped over transitions. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, single-Þeld resolution caused edge jitter on some effects. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, an Òincompatible tracksÓ error appeared while you were editing VA1A2 into VA3A4 sequence. If you created a sequence by editing audio-only from a source clip that had audio tracks 3 and 4 and you didnÕt use A1 or A2, the sequence was created with audio tracks 3 and 4, but not 1 and 2. If you attempted to edit a VA1A2 clip into the sequence, you got an Òincompatible tracksÓ error. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, the Reverse Effect button may not have worked properly on transition effects. It now works properly. ✔ The Avid calculator used to default to the video rate of the type of project you were in; thus, in Film Projects, the calculator defaulted to 30 fps for NTSC or 25 fps for PAL. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ For 16mm cut lists, Opticals listed in the ÒFirst/Last KeyÓ column of the assemble list showed 35mm durations. Other columns in the assemble list, including ÒAt this FootageÓ and ÒDuration,Ó would display the opticals in correct 16mm durations. The Optical Lists themselves were correct for 16mm. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ In a Matchback project, the (EC) display veriÞed the key numbers but did not calculate duration. You had to use timecode calculations or Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, you couldnÕt get an optical block cut list from ink numbers in optical block format. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, if you wanted the assemble list to reßect the ÒHandlesÓ cell, you had to enter the data and clear the list twice. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The Console used to report an incorrect port for deck control. Even if you had your deck connected to your printer port, the Console still assumed the deck was connected to the modem port. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ An ambiguous error message used to be displayed if you attempted to launch the Media Station without the required library extensions installed. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If the Media Station failed to render an effect because it didnÕt have enough memory, you would have gotten an error message, after which, the amount of available system memory might have decreased signiÞcantly. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The system might have crashed to MacsBug if you tried to print from Media Station before you had selected a printer. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Previously, when you loaded a clip that had both audio and video and played it back at 10x speed, a DIGI_INIT_OVERRUN exception was raised once or twice a minute. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Softness might have disappeared for the Þrst frame of a vertical edge wipe with certain combinations of transition lengths and softness values. This problem has been Þxed. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Fixed Bugs 58 Fixed Bugs Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ✔ In a PAL project, the incoming video (B-channel) showed through on the edges of some effects. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The interpolation of frequency was jittery on waves and multiwaves. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The stamp buffer cleared one Þeld later than the foreground image. This was only visible on the client monitor where you could see two Þelds. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ In a single-Þeld resolution sequence with 3D enabled, back-to-back color effects didnÕt play in real time. They played Þne if one effect was rendered or if 3D was disabled. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you converted a master clip from one resolution to another, the second import caused play problems. If you converted from one AVR to a different AVR, you might have gotten an error if you tried to play the master clip in the Source monitor and the sequence in the Record monitor. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you imported a master clip and media via OMF¨, you couldnÕt delete them using the Media Tool. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you exported an m resolution clip using OMF, and then imported it at a different AVR, the imported video would have had its left and right sides squeezed to the center. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Audio level changes didnÕt show up in AudioVision¨ when EQ was on the clip. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The Media Composer codec did not always default to the correct compression setting window. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you exported a QuickTime video and audio clip or sequence that had 24 audio tracks, the Media Station exported only the audio tracks, not the video track. Now the video tracks are exported as well. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 59 ✔ QuickTime export of some NuVista+¨ resolutions did not convert the media correctly. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Importing stereo QuickTime audio Þles added 6 dB to the signal. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ QuickTime audio export ignored any volume changes on export. If you exported an audio-only sequence with gain automation to QuickTime, QuickTime audio didnÕt reßect the volume changes. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ When you exported a QuickTime movie, one or two white frames might have appeared at the end of it. The number of white frames depended on the length of the exported clip. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you imported a QuickTime movie, the last frame would not import, so the duration in Media Station would have been one frame less than the movie duration. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ (Film projects only) The PICT import time was inaccurate. If a PICT Þle was imported in a Þlm project as a media Þle and a duration was entered, the Þnal PICT Þle in the bin might not have matched the duration entered. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you selected a bin and opened the Digitize Tool by pressing kÐB, the bin might have repositioned itself at the base of the Digitize Tool, behind the Project window. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Depending on the print driver, attempting to print the Timeline might have caused a Macintosh error 192. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The following Variable Speed Play (VSP) problems have been corrected: ¥ Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Performance might have been slow in sequences that contained complex real-time effects. Fixed Bugs 60 Fixed Bugs Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ¥ When changing direction over a title, a ßash of the alpha channel might have occurred. ¥ The play indicator light might have stayed on after the sequence had Þnished playing. ¥ A 3D effect from one clip might have ßashed in another clip. ¥ In reverse VSP, the blue bar often stopped in the middle of the sequence or it did not go all the way to the beginning of the sequence. In addition, you could not use mouse shuttle or mouse jog, or the jog buttons, to go to the head of the sequence when you were using reverse VSP. ¥ You might have seen black ßashes when using reverse VSP. ✔ Multicamera mode did not support AVR 6m in PAL unless you were using striped drives. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The Media Station did not recognize precomputes correctly in multicamera mode. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ If you grouped clips at AVR 75 and played them in hardware multicamera mode, you might have experienced ßashing in the client monitor when you clicked on the different quads. ✔ Partial redigitizing of multicamera media Þles that changed the AVR of those media Þles would cause the quads to show up as gray frames. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The ÒSwitch to emptiest driveÓ digitize setting pertained only to video. If audio media Þlled a drive during digitizing, the Media Station reported an error and you had to switch drives manually. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ An error might have occurred when you stopped an audio punch-in. This problem has been Þxed. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 61 ✔ If you used the Media Reader to create a subclip based on Sound Timecode, the bin information may have been one frame off from what you speciÞed. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ The Digital Cut window may have taken a long time to open after you changed sequences or used the Digitize Tool. That no longer happens. ✔ Placement of burn-in numbers was off for burn-in on output/digital cut when you used Media Reader. This problem has been Þxed. ✔ Media conversion had a 2-GB limit. If you tried to convert more than 2 GB of media, you would have gotten the error message ÒNot enough room on destination.Ó If you continued, Media Station would have converted the rest of the Þles. This problem has been Þxed. Known Bugs This section describes known bugs listed by functional category. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the bug description. The most recently found bugs appear at the beginning of each category. n If you encounter a problem with your system, consult these release notes to see if a known bug or workaround associated with your problem exists before contacting Avid Customer Support. General ✘ A bin with the size of zero K and a .write extension shows up in the Project window after an error forces you to quit Media Station. Workaround: If a bin with the .write extension appears, delete the .write bin and drag the original bin from the attic. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Known Bugs 62 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ✘ The Þrst clip of the sequence sets the AVR category, unless the Þrst clip is a video mixdown, then the second clip sets the AVR. In this case the sequence takes the AVR of the second clip. OMF Import/Export ✘ If you are bringing an EQ/AudioSuite effect forward to ProTools¨ using OMF, only the source media Ð not the rendered effect media Ð is brought forward. Any adjustments to the source audio beyond fades will need to be redone in ProTools. ✘ The Media Station system does not correctly import a Photoshop¨ graphic created on a transparent background that uses a blend to transparency. The blended portion is imported as a soft white outline. Workaround: Files created with the same blending to an alpha channel will look correct. ✘ If you import an OMF with alpha composition and change the resolution on import, you may encounter problems if you delete the media clip and then attempt to reimport the Þle to the same bin. If you attempt to reimport the same Þle to the same bin (or to a different bin while the Þrst bin is open), the system imports the composition but not the media. Workaround: Close the bin, open another bin, and import the Þle to the new bin. You can also try closing and relaunching the Media Station application and then reimporting the Þle. Known Bugs ✘ You cannot export AVR 70 or AVR 75 from Release 7.0.2 to Release 6.x versions of the Media Station application. Release 7.0.2 versions of AVR 70 and AVR 75 are not compatible with earlier releases. ✘ You cannot export an OMF composition to a remote volume if you do not have write permission to the root level of the volume. You will get an ÒUnable to export the bin ÞleÓ message and the system may Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 63 create a Þle that cannot be deleted until you quit the Media Station application. Workaround: Make sure you have write permission to the root level if you are going to export an OMF composition to a remote volume. QuickTime Import/Export ✘ OMF is not supported in Apple QuickTime 3.0. ✘ Locators in subclips are in the wrong place after batch digitizing. ✘ On systems with a 2-D effects board, Option-clicking for clip info in the Digitize Tool doesnÕt work. ✘ Digitize allows capture to begin on a mismatched tape. If you have a Non-Drop Frame (NDF) tape and a portion of the tape is Drop Frame (DF), the DF portion canÕt be digitized due to the NDF designation of the source. The message ÒThe source tape is non-drop frame but a drop frame tape was expected. Please insert the correct non-dropframe tapeÓ appears. Once you press OK, digitizing will abort. ✘ The Record monitor in the Digitize Tool, when in either of the Telecine Slave modes, might redraw incorrectly when you open a User Setting from the Settings scroll list in the Project window. Digitizing Workaround: Close and reopen the Digitize Tool. ✘ Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A The Record monitor in the Digitize Tool, when in either of the Telecine Slave modes, will not update when you change the number of Known Bugs 64 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes information rows or button rows using the Composer settings dialog box. Workaround: Change the Digitize Tool to either of the Telecine Slave modes, then open the Digitize settings and click OK. Editing ✘ Creating a sequence from the contents of the clipboard and loading it into the Record monitor causes an error. (You create a sequence from the Clipboard contents by grabbing the sequence icon on the Clipboard monitor and dragging it to a bin.) You may see an error message or the Media Station may hang. If the error message occurs or the Media Station hangs, exit to the Finder and restart the Media Station. Grouping and Multicamera ✘ The in/out ÒiLÓ markers donÕt display when you are in Quad Split Mode. ✘ When you use the Decompose command on a sequence that contains Group or Multigroup clips, the media will remain linked to the original clips. ✘ If the highest value audio track is turned on for playback, but is not active, Automation Gain wonÕt work. For example, if channels 1 Audio Known Bugs Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 65 through 4 are on and only channels 1 through 3 are active (only the A1, A2, and A3 buttons are on), automation will not work. Workaround: Either make sure that all channels are active when recording automation gain and donÕt touch the other faders while automating, or turn off playback for the inactive channels. ✘ When clips are digitized as audio only, the Þller level is at 15ire when loaded in the monitor. Workaround: Cut in a piece of video so there is an AVR for reference, then take the video out after youÕve Þnished digitizing. ✘ You canÕt import 8-bit AIFF or SD2 audio. ✘ Aggressive moving of the faders before an Automation Gain recording begins can result in a DIGI_INIT_OVERRUN error. If you move the faders a lot before recording starts, the system may become overloaded with volume-adjust messages. ✘ The Media Station system does not warn you if you import method 2 clips into a method 1 project. Since the audio play rate between method 1 and method 2 PAL projects is different, audio from a method 1 project will not play in a method 2 project. ✘ The system sometimes displays inappropriate messages when encountering a disk full situation when you are creating effects. For example, when you are re-creating a title, the system may display the message ÒAMEFS_FILE_SIZE_EXCEEDEDÓ when the disk becomes full. PAL Effects Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Known Bugs 66 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ✘ If an audio dissolve is created on a transition where one of the clips is currently ofßine, that effect wonÕt ÔunrenderÕ. This prevents you from being able to use ÒRender In to OutÓ. ✘ Systems with older Advanced JPEG boards may display vertical lines with titles. This only happens on upgraded systems with older boards that do not support AVR 77. The problem may happen when you single step, play backward, or fast play through a title. It can also happen when you render the top layer of a sequence containing a title. Titles Workaround: Either render the sequence by selecting all tracks between IN/OUT marks or change the image by decreasing the foreground intensity slightly (for example, from 100% to 99%). Film ✘ The text processor, Vantage, may have problems opening and printing very large cut lists. Workaround: Open the cut list in another word processor, such as Microsoft¨ Word, ClarisWorksª, or BBEditª. ✘ If you place IN and OUT marks on a 35mm audio only clip that has one or more locators, when you splice into the sequence you get an error message. Workaround: Remove the locators before you splice in the clip. Known Bugs ✘ If Comments and Locators are selected in Optical List, they show up in the Assemble List. ✘ If in the Cut List Tool you get an Optical List in Optical Block format, and select Show Transition Effects as Cuts from the Assemble List options, you might get an error message viewing the list. For Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 67 example, this will happen if you create a sequence with three cuts, place dissolves on the two transitions, and then place a segment effect such as a ßop, blow-up, or paint, on the third shot. Workaround: Use the Columnar format. ✘ If you do a digital cut with Burn-In with the Media Reader/Reader 1 set to LTC, the footage count that is burned in is incorrect. The Þeld count repeats when the frame count changes improperly. Workaround: Set the Media Reader to VITC during the digital cut. ✘ If you start at the head of a sequence and type +10000, you only go to +1000. Workaround: Type +5000 twice. ✘ Burn-in on digital cut is off by a Þeld at video rate. If you do a digital cut at video rate with Enable Burn-in on, the timecode is correct when the burn-in starts, but the edgecode incorrectly starts at 00 1999+ 15. ✘ Confusing error message digitizing with Media Reader. If you set the Media Reader Tool to decode bits of VITC and then you digitize from a tape that doesnÕt have VITC, at the end of digitizing a clip you get the message ÒSM_FILM _ROLL_MISMATCHÓ. The clip is not digitized. ✘ A motion effect over 200 fps causes a Cut List error in PAL Þlm. Workaround: Set the motion effect to less than 200 fps. ✘ When you create a new PAL project and select Þlm options, the next dialog box incorrectly defaults to 25 fps. It should default to 24 fps. ✘ Switching from 2-line to 3-line project settings in the Media Reader Tool, then switching back to 2-line, causes the original 2-line settings to be corrupted. Reselecting custom settings doesnÕt correct them, you have to re-create your settings. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Known Bugs 68 Release 7.0.2 Release Notes ✘ You canÕt digitize if Media Reader is set to Start/End Timecode and no VITC is incoming. YouÕll see the error SM_DF_NDF_MISMATCH. No clip is digitized. ✘ You canÕt change Cut List counting if you use settings from unlike projects. For example, if you create and save a Cut List view setting in a 35mm project then open a 3-perf project using the 35mm project setting, when you switch the Show Durations As to 3-perf, the Cut List still counts as 35mm. Workaround: When you want to switch counting, close one project and then reopen the different project. Known Bugs ✘ If you enter the wrong key number when you are digitizing the error message you see is unclear. (The error message is ÒSM_FILM_ROLL_MISMATCHÓ.) If you see that error message, try re-entering the key numbers. ✘ The Cut List window status isnÕt saved as part of the Workspace User settings. ✘ If you choose Modify from the Clip menu, select Set Key Number Generic (PreÞx), and then click OK, youÕll get an error message if you hadnÕt entered any key numbers when you created the clip. (The error message is ÒCM_NO_SOURCEÓ.) ✘ Field width in Burn-In tool does not work on Digital Cut. ✘ Audio track information appears incorrectly in exported ALE. For example, if you create a clip with VA1-2, A4 then export it in ALE format, the log displays only tracks A1-2. Part 0130-01392-01 Rev. A Release 7.0.2 Release Notes 69 Media Tool ✘ You canÕt delete audio clips from the Media Tool if their track designation is above A8. Workaround: Drag the clip to a bin and delete it from the bin. ✘ Opening the Media Tool in Frame view with PAL and NTSC media on your system might take some time, because the 3D hardware has to switch the frame rate for every clip that has a different frame rate. This only happens with the 3D effects board. Systems with the 3D effects module will display black in frames that have a different frame rates from the hardware setup. FieldPak Clips ✘ FieldPak¨ clips digitized in Editcamª and imported into Media Station from the DeskTop FieldPak Adapter display a half line of active video 2 lines early, at line 261 instead of line 263. Hardware and Software Limitations This section describes known limitations in hardware and software. Some of these limitations are in Avid products and some are in thirdparty products used with your Media Station system. ✘ Media Station 7.0.2 supports real-time AVR 77 playing at up to 500KB per frame.
