General Information 1.1
Introduction This manual contains information for the proper application, installation, and operation of the Audio International, Inc. (AI), Integrated Audio/Video Controller. The “x” designates the configuration of the unit. Also included are relative physical and electrical characteristics of the unit.
1.2
Purpose of the Equipment The AVMC-2010-10x Audio/Video/Chime/Page unit is an audio and video entertainment system. This unit incorporates two (2) full-range high power audio amplifier output channels for the forward cabin and two (2) full-range high power audio amplifier output channels for the aft cabin. Also included are multiple source audio switching, multiple source video switching, passenger address, and digital electronic chime capabilities. The AVMC-2010-20x Audio/Video/Chime/Page unit is an audio and video entertainment system. This unit incorporates two (2) full-range and two (2) subwoofer high power audio amplifier output channels for cabin audio. Also included are multiple source audio switching, multiple source video switching, passenger address, and digital electronic chime capabilities.
1.3
Operational Features The AVMC is comprised of three major sections that are integrated into a single package. 1.3.1 Chime/Page Section The chime/page section of the AVMC is capable of processing up to four (4) prioritized microphone inputs and a prioritized passenger briefer input. Several types of chime inputs are provided: high-tone chimes, low-tone chimes, and dual-tone chimes. These chimes may be activated by ground or +28 VDC inputs. speaker is also provided. This is commonly used for a lavatory or a galley speaker.
CHIMES: Three (3) two-tone +28 VDC activated chime inputs are available. These are commonly used to indicate ordinance sign activation. These inputs will generate a two-tone chime (high/low) when activated and a single high-tone when +28 VDC is removed. All Mic PTT inputs will activate a high-tone chime. PTT inputs are ground activated and will generate a high-tone chime when the PTT ground is removed. Other single high or low-tone chime inputs are available. Some are ground activated while others are +28 VDC activated. The single tone chimes will only generate a tone when activated; no tone will be generated when the signal is removed. The cockpit chime input is a single high-tone chime that is ground activated. Two (2) 600 ohm outputs are provided to connect to the pilot and co-pilot audio panels. A ground may be applied to the cockpit chime inhibit input to inhibit this chime. INPUT PRIORITIES: Five (5) prioritized audio inputs are provided. Priority 1 has the top priority and will override all other inputs. Priority 5 is the lowest priority and will be overridden by any other input. The priority is as follows: Pilot Mic (priority 1), Co-Pilot Mic (priority 2), Observer Mic (priority 3), Cabin Mic (priority 4), Briefer (priority 5). Mic excitation is provided for all the above with the exception of the briefer input. CHIME/PA KEY RELAY: Two (2) two-pole Form C relays are activated during all chime functions. The relays will close for the duration of the chime tone(s) or PA announcement. All contacts of the relays are uncommitted and may be used to activate other devices during Chime/PA announcements. The relays feature one (1) amp contacts and may be used to switch AC or DC loads. Special note: Chime relays are not active during cockpit call (P4:Pin12). CHIME/PA AUDIO OUTPUTS: Two (2) low-level Chime/PA audio outputs are provided. These may be used to drive high impedance loads (600 ohms MINIMUM). One (1) high-level output is available to directly drive a speaker. All Chime/PA information is internally switched to output from the main entertainment audio amplifier sections.

1.3.2 Audio/Video Entertainment Section ENTERTAINMENT AUDIO: The AVMC is designed to provide full entertainment audio control for aircraft with single or split-cabin configurations. In the case of a split-cabin configuration, both sections may control all available audio selections independently, with switch panel or infrared control capabilities. Inputs for up to five (5) stereo audio sources are provided. Each stereo input features an input level trim control to enable each input to be matched with the other audio inputs. This input trim control is accomplished directly from the entertainment switch panel, which eliminates the need to directly access the AVMC for level adjustments. An audio processor loop is provided for easy installation of an audio equalizer or other audio processor. ENTERTAINMENT VIDEO: Four (4) video sources may be selected in two (2) cabin sections. Each cabin section may select the desired video selection independently. The video may be configured to automatically switch with corresponding audio selections or independently. As with the audio section, video control is accomplished by using the switch panel or infrared remote control interfaces.

1.3.3 Audio Power Amplifier Section The AVMC features a four-channel audio power amplifier. Each channel is capable of delivering 50 watts maximum output power into four (4) ohms for a total maximum output power of 200 watts. The AVMC-2010-10x features four (4) high range amplifier outputs (20Hz to 20kHz). The AVMC-2010-20x features two (2) high range amplifier outputs (135Hz to 20kHz), and two (2) subwoofer amplifier outputs (20Hz to 135Hz). The audio power amplifier section is protected against excessive voltage, extreme temperatures, and short circuit conditions. 1.3.4 Entertainment Control A bi-directional serial data bus is used to connect the AVMC to switch panels for control of all entertainment functions. This two (2) wire bus may be connected to control panels at multiple locations. The switch panels are programmable for selection of forward or aft sections, number of audio sources, number of video sources, and audio/video source names. The use of the serial data bus greatly simplifies the wiring requirements for the system allowing all switching and status indication over two (2) wires. The data bus also enables the use of the unique feature of adjusting audio input trim levels from the switch panel. AUDIO/VIDEO CONTROL SECTION

1.3.5 +12 Volt Power Supply A +28 VDC to +12 VDC power supply, capable of sourcing up to three (3) amps continuous power, is contained within the AVMC. The power input for this section is independent from the main audio amplifier; this will allow load shedding of the +12 VDC operated entertainment equipment. 1.4
Optional Equipment Audio International, Inc. offers a comprehensive family of Cabin Control Modules. These modules provide convenient solutions for a variety of frequently encountered interfacing needs or special requirements and are an important part of AI’s “building block” system for configuring total cabin management. Application 2.1
Introduction The AVMC provides audio and video selection. It is a high-powered and efficient audio power amplifier. The unit also serves as a public address, chimes amplifier, and video briefer with entertainment audio override.

Configurations 2.3.1 Adjustments 2.3.1.1
All adjustments are accomplished with a single turn rotation potentiometer. The audio levels are adjusted by turning the potentiometer clockwise to increase the level and counter clockwise to decrease. Excessive torque will damage the components. Overall cabin speaker output will be readjusted after all inputs are balanced.
2.3.1.2
Cabin Chime / Page adjustment to set output level of all chime / page audio over cabin speakers is located on the front of the unit to the right of P2; refer to Section 7.1, Dimensions and Connections. Initially, this pot should be set in the center position until all other chime / page levels are balanced. After all chime / page functions are balanced to each other; adjust to meet requirements while the aircraft is operational.

Chime Tone audio level provides digital chime tone level control. This pot is located on the rear panel above the BNC connectors; refer to Section 7.1, Dimensions, and Connections. The level setting is independent of the volume level setting for the cabin speakers or the amplifier gain settings. Center position or slightly lower is recommended for initial setting.
2.3.1.4
Pilot microphone input level provides pilot microphone level control. This pot setting adjusts the input level from the pilot microphone. Balance the input from the microphone to the digital chime tone level using cabin speakers as output.
2.3.1.5
Copilot microphone input level provides copilot microphone level control. Balance the input from the microphone to the digital chime tone level using cabin speakers as output.

2.3.1.6
Observer microphone input level provides observer microphone level control. Balance the input from the microphone to the digital chime tone level using cabin speakers as output.
2.3.1.7
Cabin microphone input level provides cabin microphone level control. Balance the input from the microphone to the digital chime tone level using cabin speakers as output.
2.3.1.8
Briefer input level provides level control for the passenger briefer microphone input. Balance the input from the briefer audio source to the digital chime tone level using cabin speakers as output. No excitation current is provided. Direct audio input is required.
2.3.1.9
Chime / Page output level controls the combined chime generated signal and microphone information to pins 14 and 40 of P4. Typical output load impedance is 600 ohms. This adjustment operates independently of cabin speaker output and should be adjusted to desired final level.
2.3.1.10 Sidetone level provides output control of all sidetone outputs which include pilot, copilot, and observer (pins 46, 33, and 32 of P4). Sidetone output is the sum of all audio inputs including digital chime and briefer. Typical output load impedance is 600 ohms. 2.3.1.11 Speaker level provides output control of the Chime/Page speaker output on pin 50 of P4. The Chimes / Page circuit board features an on-board power amplifier rated at 12 watts and is capable of driving four (4) ohms. The output level of the amplifier is controlled by this adjustment, which operates independently of the amplifier gain settings or volume control level. Insure that the microphone and chime levels are balanced to produce the best results. 2.3.1.12 Cockpit level provides output control of the cockpit level on pins 30 and 31 of P4. Typical output load impedance is 600 ohms. Two (2) outputs are provided and the signal audio ground returns may be returned to any ground pin. The settings will be independent of the

amplifier gain settings or volume control level. Insure that the microphone and chime levels are balanced to produce the best results.
2.3.2 Entertainment Audio Adjustments 2.3.2.1
Proper audio adjustments will help to improve signal to noise ratios, produce balanced transitions between audio selections, and smooth volume control
2.3.2.2
An entertainment switch panel is used to control the AVMC via the serial data bus. A serial interface circuit board is installed within the switch panel. Serial data is transmitted to the unit when a switch button is pressed. Source selection, volume control, and input trim levels are performed by the serial data bus.
2.3.2.3
The control panel can be used to change the volume of one (1) channel of audio with respect to the other channels (TRIM). Using an entertainment switch panel in the cabin, select the audio channel that needs to be adjusted. The TRIM mode is entered by pressing the UP and DOWN button simultaneously and holding them for five (5) seconds. When the TRIM mode is entered, the display will show “T%”. For example, when the UP or DOWN button is pressed, the display will change to “T98%”. If no buttons are pressed, the switch panel will deactivate in approximately four (4) seconds. The trim level may be set to any level from 0% to 100% in increments of 2%. The TRIM mode can be exited by pressing the AUDIO SELECT button or it will deactivate within a few seconds if no buttons are pressed. The control panel is capable of independently adjusting all five (5) potential stereo inputs. Set the trim level at 80% for setup. The setting may be readjusted after amplifier gains are set.
2.3.2.4
The AVMC is equipped with a 400 watt stereo amplifier. There are four (4) independent audio output channels. The four (4) adjustment potentiometers control audio output level of the four (4) output channels. There are master gain left and right adjustments as well as high

pass attenuator left and right adjustments (-20x ONLY). These controls should be set to the center for initial set up. While the system is playing, the adjustments may be adjusted to provide the desired volume level.
2.3.2.5

Verify that the trim level for the currently selected audio source is set at 80% and that the gain adjustments are set in the center position. Set the volume level on the switch panel between 88% and 96%. Adjust the left and right master gain adjustments using bass output on woofers for reference. The master gain pots are located on the front of the unit immediately to the left of P1. A typical setting for these pots will be approximately a ½ turn or slightly lower. Adjust the left and right “high pass” attenuator pots using the balance between bass and mid-tweet output for reference.
Data Bus Control There are no controls on the AVMC. Switching control of the unit is handled by commands via the serial data bus*.

Installation 3.1
Prior to Installation Prior to installation the following items should be considered: 3.1.1 During the design and layout of the aircraft cabin, careful consideration of the location of the AVMC is necessary. Some of the items to consider include: • • • • •
Space Proximity to other devices (i.e. source equipment) Available power supply Length of cable runs Environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.)

Location of other aircraft systems (i.e. oxygen delivery) Access for service repair (if applicable) Convenience for user interface (if applicable)
3.1.2 The module shall be installed to conform to the standards designated by the customer, installing agency, or other specified requirements. 3.1.3 The unit shall be bonded to the aircraft frame. 3.1.4 Unit should be located as close to the source equipment as possible. 3.1.5 Unit should be positioned for accessibility to the system adjustments for setup and maintenance. 3.1.6 Select a mounting location that will NOT prohibit the cooling of the device. For additional information, refer to Section 3.3, Cautions & Warnings and Section 7.1, Dimensions and Connections. 3.2
Unpacking and Inspection 3.2.1 Carefully open the packaging and remove the AVMC. Verify that all components have been included in the package per the packing list. Inspect the unit for shipping damage. 3.2.2 If damage has occurred during shipping, a claim should be filed with Audio International WITHIN 24 hours and a Return Request Authorization Number shall be obtained from AI. Refer to the front cover of this manual for address and telephone number of Audio International, Inc. Repackage the unit in its original packaging materials and return it to AI following instructions given by the AI representative. If no return is necessary, retain the packing list and the packing materials for storage.
3.3
Cautions & Warnings 3.3.1 Location of unit should allow for adequate clearance from all objects and allow sufficient air exchange for cooling. 3.3.2 It is important to do a pin-to-pin power and ground check on all connectors. Ensure that power and ground are applied only where specified. Damage to the unit can result if power or ground is applied to the wrong points.

3.3.3 DO NOT connect or disconnect the unit while power is applied. 3.3.4 DO NOT connect or disconnect any inputs or outputs when power is applied to the unit. 3.3.5 DO NOT remove any factory-installed screws. Damage to the unit can result and void any warranties. 3.3.6 ESD (Electro Static Discharge) guidelines shall be followed. 3.3.7 Unit shall NOT be installed with the heat sink fins facing down or to the side. This will prohibit effective cooling of the unit. 3.3.8 A MINIMUM of one (1) inch of open airspace shall be maintained above the heat sink fins for proper cooling. 3.4
Wiring Requirements The installing agency shall supply and fabricate all external cables and connectors. The length and routing of external cables should be carefully studied and planned before attempting installation of the equipment. Allow adequate space for installation of cable and connectors. 3.4.1 Audio Input/Output Lines All audio lines shall be 22 AWG, MINIMUM, twisted and shielded cable with the shields grounded at the source. 3.4.2 Video Input/Output Lines All video lines shall be RG-179 or equivalent coaxial cable. 3.4.3 Power Wires All power and ground wires shall be 18 AWG, MINIMUM, with exception of the power amplifier section, P2: pins A and B. These wires shall be 16 AWG, MINIMUM. Power ground wires shall be grounded within 12 inches of the unit. Protect power wires with circuit breakers or fuses located close to the electrical power source bus. 3.4.4 Data Bus The AVMC is designed to interface with other Audio International equipment via the serial data bus. The serial data bus shall be

implemented using a twisted shielded pair cable in accordance with the standard military specification of MIL-W-27500 or equivalent. The wire size for the conductors in this cable shall be 22 AWG, MINIMUM. All data bus shield connections should be grounded within six (6) inches of the AVMC. The shield shall be connected everywhere a shield pin is provided. Shield terminations shall be made as close to the connector pin as possible. 3.4.4 All modules on the serial data bus shall be connected in a daisy-chain configuration. 3.4.5 All wires shall be in accordance with the standard military specification of MIL-W-22759 or equivalent. Twisted, shielded cable shall be in accordance with the standard military specification of MIL-W-27500 or equivalent. 3.4.6 A 10 AWG, MINIMUM, wire shall be attached to the ground stud on the front of the unit and bonded to aircraft ground. This ground strap shall be no longer than 12 inches in length. 3.4.7 When running cables, avoid sharp bends and placing cables near aircraft control cables. Maintain a MINIMUM clearance of three (3) inches from any control cable. If wiring is run parallel to combustible fluid or oxygen lines, maintain a separation of six (6) inches, MINIMUM, between the lines. 3.5
Physical Characteristics 3.5.1 The AVMC should be located away from heat sources, magnetic fields, direct sunlight, and areas with excessive dust. The unit shall NOT be mounted to the skin of the aircraft. 3.5.2 Refer to Section 7.0 for unit dimensions and mounting hole sizes. 3.5.3 The unit shall be rigidly mounted to its location using the appropriate fastening hardware supplied by the installing agency. 3.5.4 When mounting the unit to the aircraft’s frame, allow sufficient space for mating connectors.
3.6

Pin Out Assignments and Description 3.8.1 P1 connector provides left/right audio input, remote turn on, +12 VDC output, and +28 VDC input. The +28 VDC power contains a soft mute feature. Remote turn on does not need to be triggered externally for chime/page functions as it is automatically keyed internally. The +12 VDC output pins are connected together internally with a MAXIMUM draw of three (3) Amps. 3.8.2 P2 connector provides +28 VDC audio amplifier power, left/right audio stereo output, and left/right subwoofer output (-20x ONLY). input receives the digital output of the infrared transmitter/receiver. The mute ground input mutes audio output from P3 outputs #1 and #2. A one (1) to two (2) second delay occurs after key is removed from mute ground input. 3.8.4 P4 connector provides +28 VDC, ground, all chime/page functions. Additionally, +28 VDC emergency power input is provided via this connector to power in load shed conditions. Additional ground reference pins are provided for audio minus references. All ground pins are referenced to pin 2 of the P4 connector. 3.8.5 BNC1 and BNC4 provide video input connections. 3.8.6 BNC5 and BNC 6 provide video output connections.

Operation 4.1
Introduction The AVMC system provides complete single or split cabin entertainment control using switch panels or infrared remote control.
4.2
Operation 4.2.1 The entertainment board provides the switching and level control for up to five (5) stereo audio sources and up to four (4) video sources. The entertainment board contains two (2) sets of switching and control circuits to enable independent control of audio and video in two (2) sections of the aircraft. A two-wire data bus is used to interface the unit to the remote mounted control

panel for audio/video selection and level controls. An additional input for interface with an infrared remote control is also provided. An AI infrared detector (part number IFR-9A) is required for infrared control. 4.2.2 The Chime/paging board produces chime tones for passenger address notification or passenger alert notification. Microphone audio from the cockpit is also processed through the chime/paging board. All audio inputs to the chime/paging board will override the entertainment when keyed. Priority is automatically controlled with the Pilot microphone having top priority and the passenger briefer with the lowest priority. Adjustments are provided for each audio input level and chime tone level. 4.2.3 The audio power amplifier section takes the audio from the entertainment board or the chime/page board and amplifies it for the cabin speakers.
4.2.4 A +28 VDC to +12 VDC power converter section is also included in the package. This power converter will provide up to three (3) Amps of continuous power, one (1) Amp per output, and will withstand combined output surges of up to five (5) Amps. This is adequate power to operate several automotive source equipment items. The +12 VDC output lines are provided. These output lines are paralleled internally. The current draw from any one (1) or all three (3) outputs combined shall NOT exceed the maximum ratings.
5.0
Troubleshooting 5.1
Introduction Most functional problems are detected during the post installation test; refer to Section 3.9. Once the unit has passed these tests, it can be functional for many years of service.
5.2
General Troubleshooting Procedures Many problems can be isolated with the following general techniques:

Verify power to the unit – recheck +28 VDC power is applied to the proper pins on the unit. Use a voltmeter to verify correct level.
•
Reset – remove power from the unit for at least one (1) minute and reapply power to verify that the problem still exists.
•
Check connections and wiring harnesses – recheck all connections to the unit for security. Check all harness runs for possible pinching. Recheck all pin outs for application accuracy.
•
Isolation – general troubleshooting procedures involve isolating the problem. Attempt functions at different switch points. Try different source equipment. Once the problem is isolated to its lowest level, study all documentation on this unit and the aircraft’s entertainment system in an attempt to determine the cause.
•
Verify all adjustments by referring to Section 2.3, Configurations.
