Backed by Dell EMC global service and support, these 1U appliances are preconfigured for specific virtualized workloads, and are designed to maintain data availability in case of node and disk failure. The XC Xpress infrastructure is a scalable cluster of high-performance appliances (up to 4 appliances), or servers, each running a standard hypervisor and containing processors, memory, and local storage (consisting of solid state disk (SSD) flash for high performance and high-capacity SATA disk drives). Each appliance runs virtual machines just like a standard hypervisor host as displayed in Figure 1. Standard hypervisor host. 9 Azure Backup for Dell EMC XC Xpress Hyper-Converged Appliances – Solutions Guide | 000028 | A01 2.1.1 Nutanix architecture Nutanix software provides a hyper-converged platform that uses DSF to share and present local storage to all the virtual machines in the cluster. The general Nutanix architecture is shown in Figure 2. Nutanix Architecture. DSF virtualizes local storage from all appliances into a unified pool. DSF uses local SSDs and disks from all appliances to store virtual machine data. Virtual machines running on the cluster write data to DSF as if they were writing to shared storage. XC Xpress supports multiple hypervisors and provides choice to customer. In addition, DSF virtualizes local storage from all appliances into a unified pool. DSF uses local SSDs and disks from all appliances to store virtual machine data. Virtual machines running on the cluster write data to DSF as if they were writing to shared storage. XC Xpress offers customer a choice of hypervisors without being locked-in. In this document, the focus is on using Microsoft Hyper-V. In addition, the solution includes the Nutanix Controller VM (CVM), which runs Nutanix software and serves I/O operations for the hypervisor and all VMs running on that host. Each CVM connects directly to the local storage controller and its associated disks thereby reducing the storage I/O latency. The data locality feature ensures virtual machine I/Os are served by the local CVM on the same hypervisor appliance, improving the VM I/O performance regardless of where it runs. 10 Azure Backup for Dell EMC XC Xpress Hyper-Converged Appliances – Solutions Guide | 000028 | A01 2.2 Azure backup from Dell EMC Azure Cloud Services from Dell EMC provides comprehensive end-to-end solutions, including public cloud provisioning, billing, support, and services. Azure Backup for Dell EMC XC Xpress Hyper-Converged Appliances – Solutions Guide | 000028 | A01 A.3 MABS backup server configuration Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS), is functionally equivalent to System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) with three differences:    MABS does not integrate with System Center. MABS does not support backup to tape. MABS requires an active Azure Backup subscription. DPM server hardware requirements applies to MABS. For more detailed information about supported configurations on which MABS can be deployed, go to following site: https://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh758176.aspx For more details on the DPM server hardware requirements to be used for a MABS, go to the following site: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj651645(v=sc.12).aspx  For more details on MABS, go to the following site: https://docs.microsoft.com/enus/azure/backup/backup-azure-microsoft-azure-backup Below are limitations for MABS: Azure Backup Server is designed to run on a dedicated, single-purpose server. You cannot install Azure Backup Server on:  A computer running as a domain controller  A computer on which the Application Server role is installed  A computer that is a System Center Operations Manager management server  A computer on which Exchange Server is running  A computer that is a node in a cluster A.4 Network configurations The network diagrams below in figures 53 and 54 show the ideal network topology used for this solution. This solution used a Dell Networking S4048-ON switches. A minimum of two 10 GbE interfaces are recommended for each host. Each host should connect to dual redundant switches for network path redundancy.
