All outlets are powered whenever the Back-UPS ES is switched ON. During a power outage or other utility problems (brownouts, over-voltages), these outlets will be powered for a limited time by the Back-UPS ES. Plug your computer, monitor, and one other data-sensitive device (external disk or tape drive) into these outlets.
The Back-UPS ES protects a single line (2-wire) fax, modem or phone from surges when it is connected through the Back-UPS ES phone jacks as shown.
The supplied cable and CD-ROM provide automatic file saving and shutdown of the operating system in the case of a sustained power outage. Connect the cable to the Data Port on the side of the Back-UPS ES. Connect the other end of the cable to the USB port on your computer.

Troubleshooting
Use the table below to solve minor Back-UPS ES installation or operation problems. Consult APC Online Technical Support or call APC Technical Support for assistance with problems that cannot be resolved using the table below.
Problem Back-UPS ES will not turn on.
Connected equipment loses power.
Probable Cause
Solution
Battery is disconnected and/or utility power is not available at the wall outlet.
Connect the battery by following the instructions listed in the "Connect Battery" section; ensure power is available at the wall outlet.
Circuit Breaker has tripped.
Reduce the amount of equipment plugged into the outlets. Reset the circuit breaker by pushing the button back in.
Back-UPS ES is overloaded.
Make sure that the equipment is not overloading the capacity of the unit. The BE600-LM is rated for 600VA (360W). Try removing some of the equipment to see if the problem continues.
PowerChute software has performed an automatic shutdown of the system.
This is normal operation.
Back-UPS ES has exhausted its available battery power.
The Back-UPS ES can only operate on battery power for a limited period of time. The unit will eventually turn off once available battery power has been depleted. Allow the unit to recharge for at least 12 hours before using again. Recharge by leaving it plugged into an outlet.
The connected equipment cannot run on the stepped approximated sine wave of the Back-UPS ES.
The on battery output waveform of the Back-UPS ES is designed for computers and computer-related electronics. It is not designed for use with motor-type equipment. Call for further troubleshooting.
Back-UPS ES may require service. The Back-UPS ES beeps four times every 30 seconds.
The Back-UPS ES is providing battery power to the connected equipment.
The Back-UPS ES is operating normally. Once on battery, you should save your current work, power down your equipment and turn the unit off. Once normal power is restored, you may turn the unit back on and power on your equipment again.
The Power indicator is lit and the BackUPS ES is making, continuous beeps.
The Back-UPS ES is operating on battery power and the battery is nearly discharged.
The Back-UPS ES is about to turn off due to a low battery charge condition! Immediately save your work and shutdown the system. When normal power returns, the unit will begin recharging its battery. When this beeping starts, you have approximately 1 minute before the unit will shut off.
The Overload/Check Battery indicator is lit and the Back-UPS ES is making a, continuous tone.
The unit is overloaded.
Unplug some equipment.
The Overload/Check Battery indicator flashes and the Back-UPS ES is making continuous short beeps.
The battery may not be properly connected.
See "Connect Battery" section.
The battery may need to be charged.
Allow the unit to charge for at least 12 hours. Initiate a Self-test by turning the unit off and then back on.
The battery may need to be replaced.
If the Overload/Check Battery indicator lights again after completing the Self-test, then the battery must be replaced. Contact APC or visit www.apc.com for more details.

The standard warranty is 2 years from the date of purchase. APC’s standard procedure is to replace the original unit with a factory reconditioned unit. Customers who must have the original unit back due to assigned asset tags and set depreciation schedules must declare such a need at first contact with APC. The customer pays for shipping to APC, and APC pays ground freight transportation costs to ship the replacement to the customer.
