Badminton-rules/strokes/strategies/terminology Serving: 1) Rock/Paper/Scissor for first serve (winner picks serve or court) alternate courts each game (game 3 switch courts after 7pts) 2) We will play 2 of 3 to 15 (not win by 2) 3) Serve underhand and to diagonal court (head below handle and below waist) 4) If a point is scored by server or serving team switch courts and serve again (always say your score first and then opponents score before next serve) 5) Only one serve is allowed (if service hits net and lands in proper court it should be played) 6) Only diagonal court receiver may return the service 7) Fault/Loss of serve if serve is: Long/Short/Wide/Hits Ceiling 8) Line is in 9) Server/Receiver must be IN their proper service court General Rules: 1) 2) 3) 4)
No player or racquet may ever touch the net (Rally scoring is used) Bird must be struck on your side of the net Shuttle can’t be hit twice on the same side of the net Players make all line calls on their court side (avoid replays)
Doubles: 1) Service only (short and fat) then long and wide 2) After server scores, change service sides and serve again, until service is broken then partner serves except for the first serving team of the game, when only one player serves to start the game ONLY 3) Receiving players NEVER change courts 4) Service ALWAYS starts on the right after a SIDE OUT
Singles: 1) Service and playing courts are both long and skinny for entire game 2) Serve from right on even scores, left on odd scores 3) Both players change courts after each scored point Courtesies: 1) 2) 3) 4)
If in doubt, ALWAYS call in favor of your opponent Do not swing if in danger of hitting/running into your teammate NEVER question your opponents calls If you carry/throw the bird or strike it twice, be quick to call it

Hit to backhand side (or between partners in doubles) Hit to the center of opponent: Feet/Belly/Chest Aim for opposite alleys to keep opponent off balance Look for early movements to prepare your shots or reactions Clear to backhand to get to the net Use drop shots and serves to keep them from cheating deep Use drive when out of position L/R alleys Use the entire court
Terminology: 1) Clear- High & deep over opponent to back boundary line 2) Drop- Just over the net from back… Hairpin- Just over from close 3) Drive- Hard horizontal stroke that just clears the net and lands deep 4) Smash- Powerful downward stroke, using wrist, like spike in VB 5) Cut- Any shot that hard wrist action deceives the opponent 6) Fault- Rules infraction causing point or service loss 7) Alley- Side boundaries used only for doubles play 8) Bird- Another term for the Shuttlecock 9) Let- Any replay 10) Match- Best of 3 games
