ABOUT THE SUVARNABHUMI AIRPORT RAIL LINK (SARL) The Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (SARL) is an airport rail link, with construction completion in 2010, that has a length of approximately 28 km and extends from the airport, passes through six rail stations and ends at the Phaya Thai Station in Bangkok. The large SARL construction project started in 2005.
Five different types of IP Network cameras were used including fixed and Pan Tilt Zoom. All cameras stream MPEG4 and MJPG video over the dedicated GarrettCom CCTV LAN back to the Network Video Recorder. Aimetis Symphony Video Management and recording software was used to manage the streams from the 560 IP cameras. All of the fixed cameras are equipped with Power over Ethernet (PoE) to obtain power via the RJ45 Ethernet connection, eliminating the requirements for external power supplies.

Magnum PoE Switches Network Security Cameras for Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (SARL) SOLUTION (CONT.) of the 100Mb PES42P’s remaining ports may be fiber. The PES42P’s outdoor temperature rating, sealed case, and small footprint made it a good fit for the edges of the network where AC power was not available, cost effective or awkward to implement. Additionally, the PES42P switches are Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) and are IEEE 802.3af compliant. Some surveillance cameras are located far enough from the control room or wiring closet that fiber links are needed to cover the distance. Magnum CS14 Converter Switches were chosen to provide the 100Mb fiber to copper Ethernet conversion (see diagram below). One hardened Magnum CS14 was installed at one end of the fiber link near the camera while another made the fiber to copper conversion near the more centralized switches. Each Magnum CS14 offers an extra copper port, a feature that traditional two-port media converters do not offer. RESULTS AND BENEFITS Completed in 2010, the SARL and SARL CCTV communications subsystem are in place and providing security for the rail travelers. Bangkok travelers and suburban locals now have an efficient rail system and a secure, state-of-the-art surveillance system for safe transportation.
