Bathymetron Operation Guidelines: Field Deployment: 1. Turn on Garmin GPS12Map (red light bulb button) 2. Check GPS System Settings a. Select MENU Button and use center rocker button to select SETUP b. Use rocker button to select different tabs. c. Select INTERFACE Tab and verify Format is NMEA d. Select POSITION Tab to verify units hddd.ddddd 3. Plug GPS interface cable into back on GPS (round pin –alligned with grove) and connect to the back of the datalogger box. 4. Switch power on to datalogger (if battery has power you should hear a double beep) 5. Next turn on the Fishfinder (red light bulb button) 6. Plug in the transducer cable and secure transducer to boat so that transducer is collecting data straight down. 7. Select the SETIUP button on the Fishfinder 8. Use Arrow Keys to select Cal Tab – you should enter in the keel offset in units of meters or feet depending on what units you desire. 9. Other things to check in settings is the Sys – NMEA Output should be ON 10. Selecting SETUP button again should bring you back to the depth view window. 11. You may collect data in manual mode or auto. 12. Manual Mode Set red toggle switch to Man. Then hold middle white button down a few seconds until you hear a single beep. A few second later it will give you a double beep to let you know that both the GPS position and depth have been recorded. 13. Alternatively you can collect data automatically as you slowly paddle along. Place red toggle button to Auto. Datalogger will give you a single beep at the beginning of a measurement and a double beep when data has been stored. Troubleshooting: • Make sure cable are all connected tightly • Turn GPS on first and make sure it has a position before you turn datalogger and Fishfinder on. • Datalogger battery should last 2 hours. Have spare battery charged and extra AA batteries for GPS. • Battery level (volts) can be monitored on the Fishfinder (screen just below the depth reading) Instrument should work until battery level drops to ~10v. Downloading and Charging Datalogger Battery: 1. Disconnect GPS cable from datalogger box. 2. Connect the power charger to datalogger box and serial to laptop 3. Make sure red toggle switch is set to Man and turn power on to datalogger. Do not turn Fishfinder on. 4. Start up PC, this PC is ancient and battry does not hold charge, you will need to have it plugged in to operate. 5. Login to Rolando Raqueno, password dirsYYYY 6. Open up Depthloggerv2.2 software 7. Under SetUp select Com1 for the Serial port number 8. Select Connect 9. Download Data Fetching Data from Logger mssg should appear and a transfer % should advance. 10. When complete data should automatically open in MSExcel 11. You can clear all your data Clear Memory or just Disconnect and continue taking measurements. 12. The datalogger can store 1800 data points. After which, it cycles over to start writing over the initial data. It is a good practice to Clear Memory rather than writing over existing data. 13. Close download software, File, Exit What should your data look like? ID 1 Longitude -74.52125 Latitude 43.12345 Depth Time Date 9.3 1328 20080920 *** Note you should save your Lat/Long data to have at least 5 decimal places. You may need to select those rows. Select Format, Cells, Number, 5 decimal places. Date is YYYYMMDD, Time is based on GPS 24 hour time. Depth is recorded as positive wrt your keel offset that you set the Fishfinder at. Assuming the shoreline is a height of 0 you can multiply all depths by -1 to create bathymetric data. This format should be directly imported into ESRI products. Points can be used to create a TIN or interpolated into a grid. There may be a few records that have null or invalid data which is usually indicated with a yyyyy flag. Note: Equipment may be tested inside using the simulator mode of the GPS and Fishfinder. Simulator mode can be found under the Main Menu System Settings. The Fishfinder will automatically enter simulator mode if the transducer is not plugged in.
