Batteries And Alternator Capacity Recommendations 1. General This information is aimed to be a guidance for a correct choice of alternator and batteries. There is a continuously increase of electric power consumption in the vehicle and to still maintain a high reliability and startability it is of utmost importance to have an alternator and batteries corresponding to each vehicle application. General alternator recommendation is to always have an over capacity of approx. 20A compared to the current consumed under normal conditions. To avoid discharging of batteries at idling please never forget to check alternator supply at idling. Not only the power consumption itself but also other elements like driving time, idle running and climate/temperature are of vital importance for functionality. Volvo batteries always have strong cold condition requirements: - At 50 % state of charge there is at minus 18 degrees C both z a cranking performance requirement and z a charge acceptance requirement 2006 02 01 ENG Version 02 7 (7) Volvo Truck Corporation
