BCN Dodgeball Rules Any malicious play during the course of the match will not be tolerated and may lead to the expulsion of the player or team. Remember, we are all here for fun!
Teams • Players must be in high school. (Freshmen to Seniors only). • Teams are co-ed and must consist of 6 - 10 players. • Each game will start with six players per team on the court.
There must be at least two female players on the floor from each team at all times. Additional team members will serve as alternates.
Playing the Game • Each tournament match consists of three games. Preliminary pool matches may be limited to one game. • Each team will start behind their respective end line with players on their stomachs on the floor. • An initial whistle will sound and teams will race to the mid-line to try and retrieve the balls. • Once all balls are retrieved, a second whistle signals the start of game play. • The ball is considered “dead” when:
- It hits the floor or wall. - It hits a player. Note: If the ball hits a player and bounces off and a teammate catches the ball, the player who threw the ball is not eliminated. The player who was hit remains in the game. • The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. • Game play may be stopped for player injury. A substitution may be made for the injured player only. • 5-minute time limit for each game. After the time limit, the team with the most players remaining wins the game. • If an equal number of players on either team remain after the time limit, a 2 minute overtime period will take place. The first team to eliminate a player wins the game. • Players can only retrieve balls on your side of the court. • Players must stay inbounds, except to retrieve a ball. • Players cannot hold the ball for more than 5 seconds. Anyone holding the ball longer than 5 seconds must roll the ball to the opposing team. • Small balls may only be thrown or held by female players. Large balls may be used by males or females.
Elimination • Players are eliminated or can eliminate opposing team players by:
- Hitting them with a ball - Catching a ball an opposing player throws - Dropping a held ball after blocking an incoming ball with the held ball. - Crossing the center line into the opposing teams field of play • Head shots are NOT allowed. A player hit in the head is not eliminated. The person throwing the head shot is eliminated, but can return when a teammate catches a ball. “Ducking” into a shot is not considered a head shot. • Eliminated players may re-enter the game when: - A new game begins. - A throw from the opposing team is caught by a teammate. All eliminated team members re-enter the game.
Rule Enforcement • Rules will be enforced primarily by the “honor system.”
Players will be expected to rule whether or not a hit was legal or whether they were
legally eliminated. • All games will be supervised by Field Monitors.
The Field Monitor’s responsibility will be to rule on any situation in which teams cannot agree. The Field Monitor’s Decision is Final - No Exceptions.
