Feed-dog and fabric feed Feed-dog and stitch length W ith each stitch the feed-dog moves forw ard by one step The length of this step is determ ined by the stitch length selected. W ith an extrem ely short stitch length, the steps
are short. The fabric moves under the foo t quite slowly, even at full sewing speed. Buttonholes, satin stitch and some decorative stitches are sewn w ith a very short stitch length.
Important
Let the fab ric feed evenly!
Pulling or pushing w ill result in gaps.
Holding back w ill result in thread build-up.
If the foo t is at an angle, e.g . w hen sew ing over th ick to thin or vice-versa, the feed-dog cann o t grip and feed the fa b ric.
To solve this problem , place one, tw o or three co m p ensating plates as required behind the needle under the presser fo o t.
W hen sew ing co rn ers only a sm all section of the fab ric is actu ally on the feed-dog so th at it cannot grip the fab ric w e ll.
C o rrect this by placing one or more com p ensating plates as close as possible to the edge of the fa b ric.
Height Compensation Tool
The feed-dog can w o rk no rm ally w hen the fo o t is level.
Feed-dog and sew ing corners
The gap betw een the tw o row s of teeth is relatively large due to the w id th of the stitch plate hole.
To co rrect the height in fro nt of the fo o t, place one or more plates to the right of the fo o t next to the needle. Sew until the fo o t is level again and rem ove the plates.

Cleaning, Maintenance,
T r o u b le s h o o tin g
Cleaning If the m achine is stored in a cold room , it should be brought to a w arm room about 1 hour before use.
Cleaning Perio dically remove thread lint and rem nants w h ich collect under the stitch plate. • turn pow er sw itch to " 0 " • remove presser foo t and needle • open the free-arm cover • press the stitch plate dow n at the back right corn er • lift and rem ove it • clean the area w ith the brush • replace the stitch plate
Cleaning the hook • pow er sw itch to " 0 " • rem ove the bobbin case • clean the hook using the brush provided or a cotton sw ab . The use of any sharp in strum en t could dam age the hook. • insert the bobbin case
Lubricating • squeeze 2 -3 'drops of oil into the hook race • run the m achine fo r a short tim e w ith o u t thread to prevent oil soiling your w o rk
Cleaning the screen • w ip e w ith a damp cloth
Cleaning the machine • w ip e w ith a dam p cloth • if very soiled, w ip e w ith a so lutio n of w a te r and a fe w drops of liquid soap
Important! Never use oil, alcohol or solvents of any kind on any part of the machine!
Replacing the bulp
Front cover • turn p ow er sw itch to " 0 " • loosen the screw
Change the bulb • rem ove the left side cover • rem ove the bulb • insert the new bulb • replace cover and tighten screw
For models w ith new sew ing light see page 75
W arning: Let the bulb cool down before replacing!
Note: Use bulb type 12V 5W W 2.1 x9.5d
Please refer to the safety instructions!
Trouble shooting
75
Trouble shooting In most cases you w ill be able to identify and remedy faults by checking the following. Check whether: • the upper and lo w er threads are threaded co rrectly • the needle is inserted as fa r up as possible w ith the fla t side to the back • the needle size is correct - check the needle/thread table • the m achine is clean - brush out any thread lint • the hook race is clean • any threads are trapped b etw een the tensio n discs or under the bobbin case spring
Upper thread breaks • upper thread tensio n is too tig h t • needle is not designed to be used w ith the chosen thread • needle has been inserted in co rrectly - the fla t side of the shan k must be to the back • needle is bent or blunt • fo r ad ditio nal needle in fo rm a tio n , check the C reative C o n su lta n t and the charts on pages 7 1 -7 2 • poor quality, knotted or dried out thread has been used • use the co rrect spool disc • stitch plate or hook tip dam aged - take your m achine to your BERNINA® dealer
Low er thread breaks • the lo w er thread tension is too tig h t. • the bobbin is jam m in g in the bobbin case. Remove and replace the bobbin. • the hole in the stitch plate has been dam aged by the needle. This m ust be polished by an autho rized BERNINA® service techn ician • the needle is blunt or bent.
Skipped stitches • w ron g needles used - use only 130/705H system • the needle is blun t, bent or incorrectly inserted - push co m p letely to the top w hen insertin g. • the needle point does not suit the fab ric being sew n if necessary, use a ball point or stretch needle for knitted fab rics and a cutting point for hard leather.
Needle breaks • needle clam p scre w loose. • fab ric taken out fo rw a rd instead of behind the presser fo o t. • w hen sew ing over th ick area, the fab ric w as pushed w ith the needle still in the fa b ric. • poor quality th rea d , unevenly w o u n d or kno tted .
Faulty stitching • rem nants of thread betw een the tensio n discs • rem nants of thread under the bobbin case spring • incorrect th read in g . C h eck upper and lo w er th reads • use the co rrect spool disc
Machine fails to run or runs slow ly • plug not fu lly inserted • pow er sw itch in off ( 0) position • m achine has been standing in a cold room ■bobbin w in d e r engaged
Machine sew s in reverse • reverse sew ing fu n ctio n is activated
Defective sewing-light • Please note th at it is forbid den to chang e the new CFL sew in g -lig h t by a u n au tho rized person. For m odels w ith this n ew C FL-se w in g -lig h t, the light can ONLY be replaced by an authorized BERNINA Dealer.
