Top 5 Nutrients for Healthy Growth 1. Protein-This is one of the most important nutrients because it is a component of every cell. Our antibodies, which fight infection in the body, are also a type of protein. Foods: Meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, Nuts, Beans and Dairy Products 2. Carbohydrates-These are one of the greatest sources of energy. Whole grain products are higher in B-vitamins, iron and fiber as compared to white breads which are stripped of these nutrients in processing. Foods: Breads, Cereals, Rice, Crackers, Pasta, Potatoes 3. Fats-are necessary in building nerve tissues and hormones. Foods: Oils (Preferably olive oil), Meat, Fish, Nuts 4. Calcium– builds healthy bones and teeth, blood clotting, muscle contraction and heart function. Foods: Milk, Cheeses, Yogurt, Ice Cream, Egg Yolks, Broccoli, Spinach, Tofu 5. Iron– builds healthy blood that carries oxygen to cells all over the body. For better absorption, consume iron-rich foods with foods high in vitamin C– Strawberries, Citrus, Tomatoes, Potatoes, Broccoli, Spinach.
