EndoWorld ORL 104-E/03-2009 Bronchoscopy Giant Optical Grasping Forceps Rigid Bronchoscopy The history of rigid bronchoscopy dates back well over 100 years to when Gustav Killian performed the world’s first bronchoscopy with a rigid endoscope at a hospital in Freiburg back in 1897. The intervention was performed to remove a foreign body, which in those days was often a common cause of death. Today we know that rigid and flexible bronchoscopy should not be viewed as two separate procedures for all endoscopic indications in diagnostics and treatment methods, but rather it is more important that both techniques be combined together to achieve optimal results. The new giant optical grasping forceps are available in two versions. The first version can be ordered using article no. 10350 F and features a special spoon on its working end similar to biopsy forceps. This spoon can be used for the large-scale, simple removal of tissue. The second version is equipped with fluted jaws and used for grasping tissue fragments and foreign bodies securely. When closed, both jaws come together atraumatically as is standard. Let yourself be amazed by the excellent quality of the KARL STORZ range of rigid bronchoscopes and corresponding optical forceps. 2 3 Clinical Use Fig. 1a: The right main bronchus on the anatomical model is completely blocked by a piece of nut. Fig. 1b: The endoscopic image shows the size of the foreign body in comparison to the jaws. Fig. 1c: The piece of nut can easily be grasped using the giant grasping forceps… Fig. 1d: ... and safely removed under complete endoscopic control.
