Gainsborough by Pamela Brown Happy to see Mac and Phyliss Marr home after spending the winter in British Columbia. Welcome home! Pamela Brown accompanied Sherman and Annette Brown to Brandon on Saturday where they helped their great-grandson and grandson celebrate his 8th birthday. We were accompanied home by grandchildren Kenzie
and Braxton of Souris who spent the night with Grandpa and Grandma at Carievale. Welcome home to Jim and Donna Shaw after spending the winter in Arizona. Nice to see you. Happy to report I am a proud great-grandmother of my 9th greatgrandchild, Brian Hunter Brown of Brandon.
Bugg Splat by Tyler Bugg It’s inally springtime! That is, if the weather ever decides to cooperate. Farmers are inally getting ready to head out into the ields, the grass is green, calving season is well underway. And allergies. Can’t forget allergies. I always think it’s ironic that even though I’m allergic to grain dust, regular dust, hay, straw, and horse hair, I was born and raised on a farm. So much for the theory that if you are around something long enough you would become immune to it. For those who don’t have allergies, and don’t understand what folks like me are going through, here’s a brief rundown. First, imagine that you have a cold. Now that cold doesn’t go away for at least eight months every year, and really could pop up any time if you start cleaning or have to herd cows. Runny noses, sinus headaches, itching and rashes; they just never go away. Kleenex and other brands will never go out of business, as we allergy suffers prop it up. Also, there is allergy medication that we could take to make it better. The problem is that you either need to take it every day to have a chance of getting rid of the worst symptoms, or if it gets really bad, take a Benadryl that will knock you out for hours. Sleeping aids have nothing on taking Benadryl. The only, temporary relief allergy suffers have is when it rains, making the dust stay down for a while. Sure, I could just clean everything every day and keep the dust away but sometimes it feels like just leaving the dust and not stirring it up would be better for everyone. And this is just the dust allergy. Food allergies can be even worse. I have a friend who is allergic to seafood, some kinds of fruit, milk, eggs and a dozen other things. For myself, I will have a severe anaphylactic shock if I eat peanuts, peanut butter, almonds, walnuts, pistachios… actually, any kind of nut. I could actually stop breathing because of food. The problem isn’t so bad out here in Melita, as it’s usually pretty easy to talk to whoever made food to see if they added nuts and avoided it. When I went to university, it was a lot more dificult, especially since places like the stir-fry line, the salad bar and even the baked good could - and often
did - come into contact with nuts. In their goal to give people healthier options and provide vegetarian meals, I could have stopped breathing if I ate the wrong thing. So there is a reason why I ate a lot of cheeseburgers and poutine. As far as I know, allergies aren’t going anywhere. Dust allergies and hay fever won’t go away until not a blade of grass
or a bale of straw remains. If anything, they seem to be getting worse with each generation. Maybe someday we could cure it, or make it easier to manage. I know until then, I’ll have to carry an Epipen around, just in case I somehow accidentally eat something that was cross-contaminated with peanuts, or just avoid eating anything that doesn’t have an ingredient label.
