Counterpoint for Two Isolated Drum Sets Data Sheet Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie
Preliminary Description: This piece is to be performed by two percussionists, each wearing isolation headphones. Each performer plays along to a separate metronome, set to specific, but different tempos. Duration: 6’45” Minutes A Note to the Performers: Expressive markings in this piece are minimal, and should be reflected in a somewhat mechanical performance. All interpretations should be determined by both performers to keep the parts as similar as possible. All dynamics marked with letters (F, p, ect.) are to be performed as written. All crescendos apply only to the notes they are directly beneath. Groups of notes marked by a crescendo should begin softer, and end louder, than the most recent dynamic marking, at the discretion of the performers. Notes immediately following a crescendo should be reset to the most recent dynamic marking. Instrumentation: Both performers require the same percussion setup. It is okay if the instruments are not the equal in size, type, and sound. Performers should use standard Drum Set Sticks. 1 Kick Drum + Pedal 1 Snare Drum - Snares Off (Could Substitute Tom) 1 Hi-Hat Stage Setup: Performers should set up back to back, facing opposite sides of the stage or performance space. Performers should be centered on the stage or in the space. Alternatively, each performer could set up in very distant parts of a space to exaggerate their separation spatially. Recommended Electronics Setup: Two versions of the metronome audio files are included with this score: 1) a stereo version, including both parts; and 2) a set of files to be synchronized in a DAW. For each of these options, there are 4 versions of the metronome, all at slightly different speeds, for use in rehearsal. The files marked “100%” are the actual tempos and should be used in performance. 1. If using the stereo version, any device may be used to play the file. In addition, a splitter or mixer must be used to separate the left channel to the first performer, and the right channel to the second performer. 2. If using the separate metronome audio files, a computer with any DAW and an audio interface may be used to play the files. Using the DAW, each file must be routed to a separate output. The files must begin at exactly the same time.
