If you get fingerprints on the scan bed there are cleaning cloths and screen cleaner above GIM 5. 3. Launch Adobe Photoshop. Choose Photoshop from the Dock. 4. Go to File > Import > Silverfast (CANON-SE) or you can use the Canon scan software select CanoScan 8800F. Silverfast is the scanning software that is on the Umax scanner, this help guide relates to Silverfast. 5. If you receive an error message that the scanner cannot be found: Make sure the scanner is on. If it is, Quit and relaunch Photoshop, if that doesn’t work > Quit Photoshop > Restart the computer - click the Apple icon in the top left corner, scroll to Restart. If this doesn’t solve the problem please leave me a note and I will resolve it as soon as possible. 6. You will see an image of the last document scanned. Click the general tab if it isn’t already selected. Make sure the settings are correct for your image or document: Device: will always be CanoScan 8800F Scan Mode: to open directly into Photoshop select Normal. If you select Normal (file) you select where to save your scan. Original: Reflective to scan paper, or photographs. Transparency to scan transparencies, slides, or negatives. Pos./Neg: Positive for everything except film negative. 7. Click the Frame tab. For scans from a book, or a magazine there will be a screen over the image, which results in a pattern over the scanned image. To remove the “screen,” set Filter to Descreen. Filter set to None Filter set to Descreen or scans from photographs, slides or transparencies set Filter to None, and Image Type to F Standard. You can make any changes to your document in Photoshop. If you are scanning slides use the scan holder, you can scan upto 4 slides at one time. 8. Make sure DPI is set to 300 for anything that will be printed, or 72 for images viewed only on screen. 9. Click the Prescan button for a preview of your scan. 10. Select the area that you want to be in the final scan by dragging the edges of the red line to fit the image. If there are multiple boxes on your prescan that you do not need, select them, and click the trash icon. 11. If you need to increase the image size, you should know the final dimensions that you need it to be, and then increase the scale by that amount. You can scale by percentage or the final Output dimension. When the original image is scanned at 600dpi, and scaled to fit in Powerpoint the image quality is lower than if you had scaled during the scan and kept resolution at 72dpi or 300dpi. 12. Click on the Frame tab, and re-check the settings. If you are printing film negatives, double-check the Negafix settings. Even if you see the correct settings for your document, click to be 100% certain they are selected. 13. When you are happy with your selection and the settings, click the Scan button. If you selected Normal as the Scan Mode the scan will open automatically in Photoshop. OPTIONAL: You can use the buttons at the top of the main scan dialog to adjust contrast brightness or color if you need to. The most useful buttons will probably be the Automatic Image Adjustment and the Histogram. First click the Automatic Imageadjustment button. Silverfast will adjust the contrast and brightness automatically. Then click the Histogram button to finetune the adjustment. In the Histogram window, the light arrow adjusts the lighter tones. the dark arrow adjusts the darker tones and the middle arrow adjusts the midtones. You can use these settings until you are happy with the results. If things get really messed up, click the arrow at the bottom left of the main window to return to the original settings. When you are satisfied with the preview, click the Scan button at the bottom of the main window. Auto Image Adjustment Histogram
