2014 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships Belden ® ensures reliable Broadcast of the 2014 Alpine Junior World Ski Championships despite extreme cold and tight schedules.
When RTVS set out to broadcast Slovakia’s largest sporting event, they turned to Belden to help meet strict schedule constraints, while ensuring reliability and performance amidst extreme cold, snowy conditions.
With the ideal climate for world-class skiing and Slovakia’s largest ski area, Jasná, a small village situated in the Low Tatras Mountains, received much attention earlier this year when they hosted the 2014 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships. The event was organized by the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS), the highest governing body for international skiing and snowboarding, and it was broadcast live by Radio and Television Slovakia (RTVS). As state-owned broadcaster and member of the European Broadcasting Union, RTVS also broadcast the event to Eurovision. To connect cameras and outside broadcasting (OB) vehicles in an environment that experiences extreme cold temperatures, RTVS demanded a heavy-duty, reliable fiber solution. At the same time, the aggressive schedule to prepare for the event required fast installation and a trusted partner with the ability to ensure fast deliver of quality products. Belden had the quality, easy-to-install products and customer service to meet all of these needs. The Challenge To connect HDTV cameras to the OB vehicles, RTVS required SMPTE fibre optic cable with LEMO 3K.93C series connectors, the standard industry connector for HD camera systems among national and international broadcasting companies. Considering the tight time schedules and time consuming field termination practice,
RTVS decided on a pre-terminated solution. They also demanded fast delivery times and products that are to withstand the rigors of outside broadcasting environments, including Jasná’s cold conditions that make it the perfect location for skiing. With temperature averages around -6˚C in January and snow cover reaching beyond 2 meters thick , Jasná was a challenging installation venue. The Solution Belden’s Brilliance pre-terminated Hybrid Optical Fibre Cable Assemblies were selected for the outdoor camera system by RTVS and Centron, the system integrator responsible for specifying and delivering the solution. These assemblies provide a simple plug-andplay installation that allows for much faster deployment than field terminating the connectors – a process that can take up to an hour and a half per termination with today’s complex 3K.93C series connectors. Designed to meet the SMPTE311M standard for HD television cameras, the Belden cable assemblies were selected due to Belden’s ability to meet short project turn-around deadlines via fast delivery and provide guaranteed performance and superior durability. The multiple varieties available for the assemblies also made it extremely easy to order each camera cable with the correct connector, length and jacket material.
Product Information
For the pre-terminated assemblies that connect HDTV cameras to the OB vehicles, RTVS used Belden® SMPTE311M Hybrid Optical Fibre Cable in customized lengths. The cables are pre-terminated to straight (FUW) LEMO 3K.93C plugs on one end that connect directly into the camera and a LEMO 3K.93C free receptacle (PUW) on the other end for connecting to the plug at the vehicle. They selected the heavy-duty polyurethane (PUR) jacketed version of cable, which features a rugged, watertight dry construction that is rated for temperatures as low as -30˚C, well below Jasná’s average coldest temperatures. The Belden SMPTE311 Hybrid Optical Fibre Cable Assemblies feature four 20 AWG power conductors, two 24 AWG signal conductors and two tight-buffered bend-insensitive singlemode fibres that comply with ITU G.657A standards for improved bend radius compared to other cables. Ideal for multiplexing audio, video and power for HD cameras, these cables are also designed with portable applications in mind. The cable’s central strength member provides extra durability to withstand flexing and twisting caused by the repeated coiling and uncoiling found in live broadcast applications. With standard components to choose from for building an entire end-to-end camera system, the Belden SMPTE311M Hybrid Optical Fibre Cable Assemblies are extremely easy to configure and order to further speed deployment. Ordering involves simply selecting the cable type and specifying the lengths. The simplicity of the components also means less waste and energy throughout the manufacturing and supply chain process for an overall greener solution. Belden pre-terminated assemblies feature a factory termination that is extremely reliable and secure. Each assembly comes with test results for guaranteed performance, eliminating the need for time-consuming testing with virtually no troubleshooting required. The Result The combination of durability, plug-and-play installation and fast delivery of the SMPTE311M Hybrid Optical Fibre Cable Assemblies met RTVS’ strict schedule constraints, ensuring that camera cables were in place and ready for the event’s OB vehicles. The cables also ensured excellent picture quality for worldwide viewers of the 2014 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships regardless of the extreme temperatures. As a result, Belden provided the system integrator, Centron, with complete peace of mind that they were providing their customer with the best overall value and performance.
