Case Study: Canadian-Based Hospital Improves Workflow and Avoids Potential Data Loss Efficiency is a hospital’s top priority when it comes to workflow; a lack of efficiency can result in a decrease of productivity, a surplus of waiting patients, and more stress for the doctors and nurses. Such was the case for an Ontario, Canada based hospital. As one of Canada’s largest acute-care teaching hospitals and a major trauma center, this hospital determined that the workflow in the Emergency Room needed to be reformed to help improve patient care and reduce wait times. Previously, the staff used medical carts that were challenging to maneuver since they held a 3550 pound SLA battery at the base of the cart right above the wheels. For nurses and doctors, this bottom-heavy cart impeded their movement throughout their active schedule, adding superfluous strain on an already demanding occupation. When looking for alternative products, they needed a solution that fulfilled the requirements of both the IT department and nursing staff. After researching multiple brands for this vital reform, the hospital chose Ergotron’s StyleView® Medical Carts because of its upgraded, ergonomic design. Continuing to revolutionize their workflow, they also chose to integrate Anton/Bauer’s Elora Modular Battery System into the carts, offering the ideal experience and solution for the staff. The EloraTM Modular Battery System improves battery management for workstations on wheels and future portable point-of-care technologies. And unlike the 35-50 SLA battery, the Elora weighs a total of four pounds and attaches to the back of the cart’s pole, avoiding the inconvenience of bottomheavy, cumbersome carts and making it easier for the nursing staff to travel with the cart through the ER. One of the hospital’s main needs was to have a power system that allowed personnel to switch batteries without the system shutting down. This transition can be a continual challenge, since it can cause important patient information to be lost. With Anton/Bauer’s Elora, the staff has two-minute bridge power that allows them to change the battery without powering down the system or losing data. Most of the staff were comfortable with the Elora in minutes because of its distinct, easily comprehensible pictorial indicators. The interface includes a pain scale fuel gauge that monitors the battery’s health with a range of happy and sad faces based on the Wong-Baker Pain Scale. Once informed on what the symbols represent – the battery’s charged if the face is happy, it’s depleting if the face is crying – doctors and nurses can easily recognize when it’s time to switch the battery to ensure the system continues running without interruption. To properly test the batteries, the hospital ran a wireless Cytrix connection during shifts – a connection that rapidly depletes batteries. The result averaged a 4-6 hour run time and the battery yielded around 1,000 cycles before needing to be replaced. Although it wasn’t a critical factor that they had to consider, Elora’s cost of ownership also provided fiscal savings for the hospital. Not only did the Elora system improve their workflow, but it also provided a cost-effective solution for them since Elora batteries only need to be changed every year based on their test. Elora demonstrates Anton/Bauer’s commitment to providing healthcare professionals with an improved, uncomplicated solution that decreases agitations with movement and workflow and increases concentration on patient care.
