Because of this, any gigabit switch conforming to IEEE 802.3ab will suffice. However, we recommend using managed switches for improved control performance and providing the ability to enable redundancy. Momentum can also be integrated in existing building networks as long as care is taken to ensure ample bandwidth is available for Momentum. Also, if another device (computer, printer, etc ...) on the building network has the same IP address as a momentum device, it will result in erratic behavior. NETWORK LIMITATIONS »» A Momentum Input device uses a bandwidth of 2.38% at 96K sampling and 1.19% at 48k sampling. »» ALL devices on the network must be at 1000BASE-T or have multicast filtering to prevent switch back buffering. »» Ethernet distance must not exceed 100 meters (CAT6). »» Power over Ethernet (PoE) distance must not exceed 50 meters. SWITCH REQUIREMENTS »» Layer 2 Gigabit (1000BASE-T) Switch »» Capable of layer 2 multicast filtering »» Managed switch POE SpECifications »» The switch is required of producing 15 watts of 48 volts DC per port, which is the IEEE 802.3af standard. MULTICAST FILTERING If the Momentum system is going to be controlled by a PC, the MTS or another control device, it is recommended that you use a managed switch capable of layer 2 multicast filtering. If you have more than 48 channels on the network it is required. By filtering the multicast packets (the audio data) we are preventing the computer network device from being overloaded with audio data. The multicast address that must be filtered out is 01-15-AB-C6-00-00. Please refer to your switch manual or manufacturer for instructions on applying this filter. Pro Co Sound 225 Parsons Street | Kalamazoo, MI 49007 888-253-7360 »»www.procomomentum.com TECHNICAL white paper MOMENTUM NETWORK DESIGN REDUNDANCY To achieve switch to switch redundancy, we recommend utilizing Spanning Tree Protocol (STP). STP is an OSI Layer-2 protocol which ensures a loop free topology for a bridged LAN. STP is defined in the IEEE Standard 802.1D. STP allows us to connect multiple switches together using multiple cables without creating circular loops and thus redundancy. If multiple switches are used within the Momentum network, they should be connected in a circular loop. SWITCH SETUP »» Elect a root bridge. The root bridge of the spanning tree is the switch with the lowest bridge ID. »» »» »» »» »» »» »» You can determine which bridge is the root by configuring its priority to be lower than any other bridge on the LAN. Enable RSTP (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol) Adjust the Hello Time to 1, Max Age to 6 and the Forward Delay to 4. If this switch is the root bridge, set it’s priority to a lower value than the other switches on the network. Repeat these steps for the other switch(s) that you are bridging with. Connect the switches together using a primary and secondary cable or connect the switches in a circular loop if using more than two switches. After a few minutes the switches should have established the STP root and backup paths. Test that the redundancy is working by unplugging your primary connection. The switch should begin using the secondary connection in less than two seconds.
