The basic types of optical attenuators are xed, step-wise variable, and continuously variable. Fiber optic attenuators are used in the ber optic links to reduce the optical power at a certain level. Commonly used ber optic attenuators are the female to male type, which is also called a plug ber attenuator. Fixed value ber optic attenuators can reduce the optical light power at a xed level. Variable ber optic attenuators are with adjustable attenuation range. 8 www.eaglephotonics.com Passive Components Fiber Optic Connectors Optical Connectors prevent the reflection of light that are present at open end systems, Fiber optic terminator can terminate unused fiber connector ports in fiber optic systems . Fiber Optic Adapters Fiber optic adapters are designed to connect two fiber optic cables together. They come in versions to connect single fibers together (simplex), two fibers together (duplex), or sometimes four fibers together (quad). Adapters are designed for multimode or singlemode cables. The singlemode adapters offer more precise alignment of the tips of the connectors (ferrules). It is ok to use singlemode adapters to connect multimode cables, but you should not use multimode adapters to connect singlemode cables. This can cause misalignment of the small singlemode fibers and loss of signal strength (attenuation). 9 www.eaglephotonics.com Passive Components Bare Fiber  Bare Optical fiber of 0.25mm size can also be supplied in various lengths wrapped on plastic spools with or without connectors (SC/PC, SC/APC, LC/PC, LC/APC, FC/PC, FC/APC)  Option are most commonly used low water peak Single Mode (G-652 D), Non zero dispersion shifted Single Mode (G-655), bend insensitive Single Mode (G657 A and B), Multi-mode of of Om1 (62.5/125), OM2 (50/125), OM3 (Laser optimized 50/125) available.
