Calibration Feedback System Highlights Thank you for purchasing Calibration Feedback System (CFS) software from Canvys. CFS is designed to enable Physicists, Technicians, PACS Administrators, or any end-user to easily calibrate, quantify, and conformance test Canvys Image Systems displays. This ensures all medical images are being displayed optimally and in a consistent manner per the requirements stated in the DICOM Part14 standard and TG18 guidelines.

Recommended Windows Settings Screen Saver All LCD displays will exhibit some “image retention” when an image is left on the screen for a period of time. This is easily remedied by implementing the Window Screen saver function. A moving image such as “Mystify” with a setting of 10 to 15 minutes is recommended. Windows 7 - Click on the Start menu orb, select Control Panel, click the Personalization icon, and choose the Screen Saver icon. Windows XP – Click on the Start menu, select Settings, select Control Panel, double-click the Display icon, and select the Screen Saver tab.

Display Power Management System (DPMS) To extend the life the backlight bulbs the Windows DPMS function is encouraged. A setting from 20 to 60 minutes is recommended. Windows 7 – Navigate to the Screen Saver settings, click the “Change power settings” link, click the “Change plan settings” link, and select the desired power management settings. Windows XP – Navigate to the Screen Saver settings, click the Power button, and select the desired power management settings.
Desktop Wallpaper To minimize “image retention” issues, setting the Desktop Wallpaper to “none” is recommended. Windows 7 - Click on the Start menu orb, select Control Panel, click the Personalization icon, and click the “Desktop Background” link. Windows XP – Click on the Start menu, select Settings, select Control Panel, double-click the Display icon, and select the Desktop tab.
CFS Installation NOTE: Before starting this install process: Install and configure video drivers and card(s) for all grayscale and color monitors. Canvys highly recommends using video drivers supplied on the CD shipped with all Image Systems displays. 1. Log into computer with Administrator rights. 2. Insert the Canvys software CD labeled “Image Systems” into the CD/DVD drive. 3. Select “Install CFS Local”. 4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

By default, the installer will run until completed with no user interaction needed. The installer gives the user the ability to step through the install process by changing the Run radio button to Step.
Installing USB Calibration Photometer (Puck) Driver Windows XP 1. Connect ONLY an Image Systems Calibration USB Puck to USB port. 2. Windows Found New Hardware Wizard will start. 3. Select “Search for a suitable driver for my device” and click Next 4. Select “Specify a location” only and click Next. 5. Browse to C:\Image Systems\Support Files, click OK, click Next, and click Finish.

Windows 7 1. Connect the Image Systems USB puck to an available USB port. 2. Click the Start menu, right-click on the Computer link, and choose Manage.

NOTE: BEFORE unplugging the Image Systems calibration puck it is recommended that you click on the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the System tool tray and “stop” the “Sequel Imaging Chroma Calibrator” device.

Opening CFS CFS Dialog Box After proper installation of your CFS software, the CFS icon will appear in the System tool tray. After initial install it may take several minutes for the CFS icon to appear. Double-click “ISC CFS” in the System Tray (System Tray is usually located in the lower right corner of desktop).

CFS Pop-up Menu When the CFS dialog box is minimized several other CFS features can be accessed with a right mouse click on the ISC CFS icon in the tool tray (see picture below).
Shutdown CFS Click Shutdown CFS to stop the CFS Application. Please be aware that this will terminate all monitoring and calibration operations! Uninstall CFS Clicking Uninstall CFS will remove the application from Windows. The calibration data, event log files, and status reports will remain in the C:\Image Systems directory after uninstall is completed. These can be completely removed by deleting the Image Systems directory. Display Properties This is a link to the Windows Display Properties, Settings tab. If changes are made to the display(s) configuration, CFS will automatically detect the changes. Test Patterns Selecting “Test Patterns” will display a SMPTE test pattern or the last user selected pattern on all displays. Right-click anywhere on the screen to select other test patterns or functions. Select “Exit” to return to normal mode. Uniformity Test Uniformity measurements to the TG18 and DIN standards are possible with CFS using an Image Systems hand held USB photometer (puck). Plug the USB puck into a USB port and right click on the CFS icon in the tool tray. Select Uniformity and then the desired uniformity check (i.e. IS 100%). Follow the on screen instructions. The results of each test are displayed on the screen and recorded in a data file. The data file (c:/Image Systems/CFS/Uniformity.CSV) can be best viewed with Microsoft Excel.

Low Contrast Spot Test This test can be performed by an end-user with no additional special tools. An additional advantage of this test is that it takes into account not only the DICOM 3.14 calibration as performed by CFS, but it also takes into account the ambient lighting in the environment, any modifications to brightness and other settings on the display, and the perception of the eye/brain of the end-user. Since this is an easy test to access and perform at any time, it is recommended that this test be performed frequently, such as at the beginning of every signon to the device, or any time a significant change in ambient lighting occurs. The test can be accessed by right clicking the CFS icon in system tool tray, selecting Low Contrast Spot Test, and then either the "Quick Test" or the "Multi Background" test.
Quick Test - Consists of a single low contrast disc randomly positioned on the display. Multi Background – Consists of three different test images, each image consists of a single randomly located disc at different background luminance levels. The test is successful when the user is able to visually locate the randomly placed disc on the display, position the mouse pointer over the disc, and then left click the mouse to acknowledge the location. If the test is unsuccessful, then the user may need to adjust ambient lighting conditions, display settings, or request support.

Luminance Sampling Luminance sampling is possible with CFS using an Image Systems hand held USB photometer (puck). Plug the USB puck into a USB port and right click on the CFS icon in the tool tray. Select Luminance Sampling, then Continuous Automatic.
When the user selects Continuous Automatic, the Luminance Sampler dialog box is displayed. The sampling mode has 3 options: Paused (not sampling) Capture single sample Sample continuously at selectable intervals When a sample is taken the Luminance parameters are displayed as shown below:

NOTE: Before proceeding, the room lighting should be set to “viewing” level and displays should be fully warmed up! (At least 20 minutes) DICOM Calibration Professional Series and X-Series displays are fully calibrated in the factory. The CFS status will read “In full compliance” without completing step DICOM Calibration. However, it is recommended that DICOM calibration be repeated at this time to capture your ambient room lighting and achieve the best possible results. 4.
Click the General tab Click “Recalibrate all displays to DICOM Standard”
NOTE: This will take approximately 12 to 15 minutes depending on the number of displays.
Your Image Systems displays are now DICOM calibrated and ready for use.

Set “White Level Target” to appropriate value. In most cases the best target for individual displays will already be set on the displays Display tab automatically.

To set unique luminance targets for individual displays select each Display tab and select a luminance target.

Low Level Offset Change this setting to adjust for ambient (room) light. Most reading conditions are in relatively low room lighting and the default of 0.0 cd/m2 should be used. For rooms with bright lighting such as Operating Rooms, values of 1.5 to 2.0cd/m2 are common.
Calibration Steps The default of “0,5,10,15…” should be selected. This takes 52 measurements. Selecting smaller steps (more measurements) may slightly improve the calibration but will take much longer to complete. Selecting larger steps (0,15,30,45…) and below is not recommended except for certain testing purposes.
Verification Steps The default of “0,15,30,45…” should be selected. This takes 18 measurements. Selecting smaller steps (more measurements) may slightly improve the verification but will take much longer to complete. Selecting larger steps (0,17,34,51…) and below is not recommended except for certain testing purposes.
DICOM Compliance Check Check this box to perform a DICOM compliance check on all displays.
DICOM Calibration Check this box to perform a full DICOM calibration on all displays. This will take approximately 12 to 15 minutes depending on number of displays.
HTTP Interface These optional settings allow for connection to the CFS WebManager server. CFS WebManager Name/IP - Input the IP address or computer name for the computer running the CFS WebManager software.
Hierarchical Group Name - Assign the system to a group/sub group. Group/sub group assignment allows the user to easily filter and view systems on the CFS WebManager home page. Examples: Hospital ABC/Radiology Hospital 123 In this example the user could filter the view on the CFS WebManager home page by “Hospital ABC”, or by sub group “Hospital ABC/Radiology, etc. Activity Level – The Activity Level shows the connection status between CFS and CFS WebManager. If the HTTP Interface settings have been entered correctly, the Activity Level will show as Active.

System Status
CFS Identifier The currently installed CFS version and release date are displayed here. CFS Service This is the status of the ISCcfs Windows service. CFS runs as a Windows service in Windows 2000 and XP and will display an “Active” or “Not Active” status here. Because Windows Vista and 7 have advanced security, CFS does not run as a service and will display a “#0: Access is denied” message here. CFS Mode – Administrator is the default mode Administrator mode allows for changes to CFS parameters so you may tailor your workstations to your specific needs. In User Mode, users are only allowed to run a DICOM compliance test, a DICOM recalibration and view the CFS Calibration Report. User Mode View

DICOM deviation tolerance is set on the Scheduler Tab NOTE: Displays “waking up” from power saver mode may show “Not Available” or “Out of Compliance” for a short period of time until warmed up.
Display Identification To show the display order number from CFS, click the Identify button. A pop up box will show the display Number, Name, and Unique ID according to CFS. Identify can be used to compare the Windows display numbering with the CFS display numbering, which should match.
Exit CFS Clicking the Escape button will close the CFS window. Doing this or closing CFS will keeps CFS running in the background. CFS can be reopened by double-clicking the monitor icon in the Windows system tray.
About CFS This opens the About CFS dialogue box where users can view the ReadMe document and Canvys corporate contact information.
Large GUI Clicking this button will increase the size of the CFS window, which is useful while operating CFS from high-resolution displays.

Back Light Intensity settings All Image Systems displays utilize an internal backlight sensor to measure the brightness of the backlights every minute. By adjusting the “Auto-adjust when off target by” setting you can control how closely the displays will maintain the Target White level luminance value set on the General tab. Settings of 3% to 5% are typical. Should the luminance value vary more than the “Log alert when off target by” setting, an alert message will be logged in the Event Log. Typical settings are from 5% to 7%. The “Check brightness value every” should be set to “sliding scale” when an AFS (Add on Front Sensor) is used. This allows CFS to act as a Stable Backlight Control (SBC) for displays lacking this built-in feature.

White Level Luminance This section sets the schedule on which a White Level Luminance check will occur automatically using the Side Bezel Sensor built into each display or the AFS option. Typically this check is scheduled during off-hours so as to not disrupt workflow. Common frequency settings are once per week or once per month. During the scheduled check, should the reading vary outside of the Auto adjust target (typically 3%) CFS will automatically change the White level to the Target White level luminance value set on the General tab and log an alert to the Event Log if the reading varied outside of the Log alert target (typically 10%).
DICOM Compliance This section sets the schedule on which a DICOM verification check will occur. Typically this check is scheduled during off-hours so as to not disrupt workflow. Common frequency settings are once per week or once per month. During the scheduled check, should the reading vary outside of the Auto adjust target (typically 5%) CFS will automatically recalibrate and log an alert to the Event Log if the reading varied outside of the Log alert target (typically 10%).
CFS Calibration Report Checking the “Auto-generate reports file” box will cause a calibration report to be created* each time a conformance check is run (see sample report on page 26-27). The report file is saved in C:/Image Systems/Reports. The default file name is the local computer name with the current date appended to the end. The file type is HTML. The “File name” field in the “Event Log Export” section on the Preference tab sets the file name used for export of the CFS log file and the CFS Calibration Report.
NOTE: If your displays are in the Windows power saver mode when a scheduled White Level Luminance or DICOM Compliance check occurs CFS will automatically power up the displays, wait 15 minutes for the displays to warm up and then initiate the check*.
*Windows 7 does not allow programs to run as a service in the same way as previous versions of Windows. This prevents the CFS Scheduler from running at the log in screen. However, if an event is missed, CFS detects this when the next user logs in and it will display a dialog box with the option to either initiate or postpone this action.
Visual Acceptance Scheduler This section configures CFS to display a confirmation image along with an informational message on a scheduled basis. The visual confirmation image will remain on the screen for four hours or until the user confirms the image and enters their initials. See the preference tab to configure the informational message and select a confirmation image. Example Visual Acceptance image with default message.

Front Ambient Sensor Control All Image Systems Professional-Series displays have a front ambient room lighting sensor. CFS receives current room lighting readings from this sensor and alerts the user should the lighting change significantly from the reading taken during the last calibration process. Should the reading vary greater than the “Display warning when brighter by” setting a popup warning will appear. The “Check ambient LUX every” setting adjust the time interval for CFS to take readings from the Front Ambient Sensor (LUX - a measure of the apparent

intensity of light). In the case of a pop-up warning it is recommended the user either returns the room lighting to the conditions set at the last calibration or recalibrates the displays. NOTE: With Image Systems M-series displays this section does not apply.
CFS Event Log Tab
Clicking on a Heading will sort the Event Log by the selected item. The default is sort by Date and Time
Event Log The Event Log tab shows all past CFS activity. The information is stored in a text file on the C: drive of the local computer. While in CFS administrator mode the log file can be edited or exported to any location on the local computer. Settings in the Preference tab allow for automatic export of the event log on a user-defined schedule as well.

Permission Popup When a scheduled event from the Scheduler tab is initiated a popup message will appear on the screen. The popup box allows anyone sitting at the system to initiate or terminate the scheduled event. If no action is taken the event will execute automatically after the set countdown time. Should a user terminate a scheduled event a message is recorded in the event log and an error message is sent to the CFS WebManager.

Event Log Export The CFS event log can be automatically exported to any location on the local computer on a set frequency by changing the “Export log file every” setting from Never to a desired frequency. Set the path location by typing the desire path or click the Browse for path box. The default file name is the local computer name. Selecting the Append date to file name box will append the date to the end of the file name. Purge log file after export is recommended to keep the Event Log file at a manageable size. (The Event Log will automatically truncate old entries after reaching 2048 lines) Exporting the Event log on a monthly basis is common.
Visual Acceptance When the Visual Acceptance Image is set or enabled on the Scheduler tab a default SMPTE image and generic message are displayed. To select a different image enter the path and file name in the Confirmation Image box. Click the “Browse for image” box to browse. GIF, Bitmap and DICOM formats are supported. To change the default message, type your desired message in the Confirmation message box.
CFS Activation Code Some display and video card combinations require an activation code for CFS to continue functioning after the 30 day trial period. After 30 days the popup message below will appear when the CFS service starts. Contact Canvys technical support to receive a valid activation code.
Auto Update Function This option allows CFS to update to a new CFS version automatically. The latest CFS version can be found at http://teklink.canvys.com - downloads. Update one system to the new version. Copy the ISCcfs.exe file found in C:/Image Systems/CFS folder to the path specified in the “UNC Path” setting on all other systems running CFS. At the next computer reboot CFS will check the “UNC Path” location for a new version and update automatically. NOTE: Path names must follow the Windows Uniform Naming Convention (UNC). UNC names identify network resources using a specific notation. UNC names consist of three parts - a server name, a share name, and an optional file path. These three elements are combined using backslashes as follows: \\server\share\file_path.

PnP Table The PnP (Plug and Play) Table allows users to customize how non-Image Systems displays attached to the computer are recognized by CFS and added to the CFS calibration process. For example, by adding the Plug and Play number for a NEC 2190 to the PnP Table, CFS will add a display tab for this display and allow calibration with either an optional AFS or the hand held Image Systems USB photometer. Only displays that support DDC communication and VESA standards for brightness control are supported. The user can also use this mechanism to instruct CFS to ignore recognized displays. Open the CFS dialog box and click on the Preference tab. Select the PnP Table button at the bottom of the window. Click inside the popup PnP table window and add the PnP number of a supported display. Now select the appropriate communication protocol for the display. After reboot CFS will add a Display tab for the display. Contact your Canvys support team for help establishing the PnP number for your display. Example PnP Table
App Table The Application Table is where users can set up a Gamma Mode and Brightness for an individual application or multiple applications. For example if the user looks at PACS images on a high bright diagnostic monitor and opens Microsoft Word documents on a regular basis they may experience eye strain due to the bright white MS Word page. The user can open MS Word, open CFS to the Preferences tab, select the App Table button, choose MS Word from the active Application pull down menu, choose a gamma mode of 0.0, a brightness of 50%, and click the Add New Application button. After clicking confirm to exit the App Table, when the user opens an MS word document, the monitors’ brightness will be automatically reduced by 50% and the gamma table will be changed from DICOM to 0.0 (no gamma) allowing the user to experience less eye strain. If the user opens up the PACS software to

look at medical images, CFS will automatically adjust the brightness back to the Target White Level and the DICOM calibrated gamma table set up as shown on page 13. The default file name is the local computer name with the current date appended to the end. The file type is HTML. Device Parameters The Device Parameters section displays information read from the attached displays internal memory. Also displayed is the current driver for the displays graphic card and last date and time of calibration of the Front Bezel Sensor along with the serial # for the Image Systems calibration puck used to last calibrate the front sensor. Calibration of the front sensor can be initiated by clicking on the “immediate action” box. To ensure accurate calibration we recommend the front sensor be recalibrated to the Image Systems hand held USB photometer on a yearly basis.
Front Luminance Sensor selection This should be set to “Integrated” to utilize the retractable front sensor built in to each display. The “USB Puck” (hand held puck) setting is used to facilitate calibration of supported displays that do not have a Side bezel Sensor.
Color Point Adjustment The Color Point Adjustment section allows for color point matching of color displays. To match a color point value, select a Color Point Target on the General Tab. Checking the “Capture XY Color Point” box will facilitate capture of the color coordinates of the display. The XY coordinates and color temperature are displayed on the General Tab. Additional displays can now be color adjusted to these coordinates by checking the “Color Point Calibration” box on the respective Display tab.
Lamp Parameters The Lamp Parameters section displays information on the state of the backlights. As the backlights age, the Lamp Power Level value will slowly decrease.
Luminance Parameters This section displays the target White Level for the display associated with the current Display tab. Changing the target value will affect only the display associated with the current Display tab. To initiate an immediate White Level check, click the corresponding immediate action box. This will activate the front sensor and check the white level. To adjust the white level, click the second immediate action box.
DICOM Parameters The DICOM Parameters section displays important information about the current DICOM calibration parameters. The last date of DICOM calibration and verification along with the percentage deviation from nominal are shown. Checking the “Check for DICOM Compliance” immediate action box will activate the front sensor and start a DICOM check for compliance. To run a complete DICOM calibration process check the “Recalibrate to DICOM Standard” immediate action box.

Rollback to previous DICOM Curves Each time DICOM calibration is performed, CFS saves the previous calibration file(s). The user can choose to “rollback” to previous DICOM calibrations. Clicking on the Rollback [immediate action] box opens a list of past calibration files for the corresponding display. Example: “Dicom 120220” represents calibration file created on Feb. 20th of 2012 for the first display (Display 1).

CFS with Optional Add-on Front Sensor (AFS) The Add-on Front Sensor with CFS is designed to enable hands free calibration, quality checks for DICOM conformance and brightness control on selected LCDs. Supported displays: -

Add-on Front Sensor (AFS) Mounting Instructions: 1. Install CFS Software from the CD labeled Image Systems, provided. 2. Select a location for the AFS. The best location depends on your display model. Be sure the USB connector on the AFS is accessible by the USB cable that plugs into your computer. 3. Select the correct mounting tape supplied with the AFS. Different displays have varying bezel thicknesses requiring different mounting tape. For best results the AFS sensor should be as close to the display glass as possible without touching. See below for suggested mounting positions. 4. Add the appropriate tape thickness required for your display to the AFS sensor. Before removing the final mounting tape backing, connect the USB cable, hold the AFS in your selected mounting location and check that the sensor does not touch the display glass. Remove the final mounting tape backing and carefully place the AFS in your selected location and press firmly. 5. Connect the other end of the USB cable to an available USB port on the computer. Windows 7 - Click the Start menu, right-click on the Computer link, and click Properties. Choose “Browse my computer for driver software”. Click the Browse button and select C:\Image Systems\Support Files and click Ok and then Next. Check the “Always trust software from X-Rite Incorporated” checkbox and click Install to complete the installation. Windows XP - The “Found New Hardware Wizard” will start. Select “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)”, and Click Next. Select “Search for the best driver in these locations”, check the “Include this location in the search” checkbox, click Browse, select C:\Image Systems\Support Files, click OK, and follow on screen instructions to complete.
6. Open CFS and select the display tab for the display with the AFS, select “Reposition Sensor Hotspot”. Move the slider until the white box displays under the AFS. Use the keyboard arrow keys for fine adjustments. 7. Follow the Quick CFS Set-up / Calibration instructions on page 13.

Positioning the Sensor Hotspot underneath the AFS. Troubleshooting and Support Front Sensor stuck in the ‘in’ or ‘out’ position On rare occasions such as a power failure or mechanical problems the retractable front sensor could get stuck in the ‘in’ or the ‘out’ position. Should this happen DO NOT manually force the sensor by prying it out or forcing it back in! Open the CFS dialog box and select the Display tab for the display with the stuck sensor. Select the “Check White Level Luminance” [immediate action] box to deploy the sensor. For sensors stuck in the out position, follow the same procedure and then click “Abort”. The front sensor should retract. If the sensor does not deploy or retract please contact your service representative.
Event Log shows DICOM or Luminance Maintenance bypassed Probable cause is the Bezel (Front Sensor) is not calibrated or DICOM calibration was not run at initial install (see install instructions to calibrate front bezel sensor or run DICOM calibration).
Calibration puck driver problem (“The Specified Sensor is not responding”) On rare occasions the driver for the hand held calibration puck can become corrupt. Sometimes simply plugging the puck into another USB port will remedy the problem. A system reboot may also work. If problem still persist the driver may need to be reinstalled. Open the “Unplug or Eject hardware” icon from the tool tray. Click on properties and then the driver tab. Click on uninstall and then close. Unplug the puck from the USB port and then reinsert into same USB port. The Found New Hardware Wizard will start. Click next / Select “Search for a suitable driver…..” (default) Click Next. Select “Specify a location” only. Click Next. Browse to C:\Image Systems\Support Files\ Click Ok / Next / and Finish.

Pop-up window with 30 day warning appears at boot up CFS activation code not entered or entered incorrectly. See the Preference tab section for instructions on entering the CFS activation code.
CFS Display tab missing (two displays connected but only one tab present) Un-checking the display with no tab, and re-checking should resolve this. Alternately, unplug power to the display not being recognized, reconnect, and reboot the computer. If this does not correct the situation the graphic card drivers may not be installed correctly. Contact your service representative for help installing the graphic card drivers.
