Page 1 of 2 Key Tips & Considerations for Customer Purchase Chain Saws: STIHL MS 290, 310, 390 At the time of sale, use these tips below along with the more detailed information in the Safety and Instruction Manuals and you will be well on your way to creating a pro-active approach to meeting your responsibilities as a STIHL authorized retailer. Be sure to submit the product registration with each STIHL outdoor power equipment sale. If you need additional or current Safety and Instruction Manuals you can go to STIHLUSA.com and download these for free. As always, employees should read and understand all safety precautions included in the Instruction Manual, and should advise all STIHL customers to read, understand and follow the same as well. Improper use can cause serious or fatal injury. Thank you for your commitment to STIHL. Safety • Assist the customer with determining the proper PPE that STIHL recommends when operating a chain saw, such as: o ear plugs or hearing protectors. o face shield or face screen over goggles or protective glasses meeting ANSI Z87.1. o gloves. o steel-toed safety boots. o chaps or pants containing pads of cut retardant material. o approved safety hard hat. • Explain that the type of bar and saw chain used is an important factor in the occurrence and force of the kickback reaction. STIHL recommends the use of reduced kickback bars and low kickback chains. Review the reactive forces: o pushback. o kickback. o pull-in. • Explain to the customer that in order to reduce the risk of injury from reactive forces, the chain brake must be engaged when starting the saw. Never operate the chain saw without a front hand guard. In a kickback situation this guard helps protect the left hand and other parts of the body. Use • • •

Identify the main parts of the chain saw. Explain how to properly and safely fuel the chain saw, such as moving at least 10 feet from the fueling spot. Explain how to start and operate the chain saw. o Before starting, take off the chain guard (scabbard) and inspect the saw for proper condition and operation. o Show how the customer should position the chain saw so that the user’s body is clear of the cutting attachment whenever the engine is running and to stand to the left of the cut while bucking. o Do not drop start the chain saw. This method is very dangerous because the user may lose control of the saw. Describe the two recommended ways for starting a saw. o Cut only one log at a time. o Never run the chain saw above idle speed for more than three seconds when the chain brake is engaged or when the chain is pinched or otherwise caught in the cut. o Do not operate the power tool using the starting throttle lock, as the user does not have control of the engine speed. Advise never to let the power tool run unattended. Explain that the chain saw is a one-person machine. Do not allow other persons in the general work area, even when starting. Stop the engine immediately if approached.

Address the different materials that can be used with the product. o The chain saw should only be used for cutting wooden materials. If used for other purposes, it may result in an accident or damage to the machine. o Make sure that the saw chain does not touch any foreign objects such as rocks, fences, nails and the like. Such objects may be flung off, damage the saw chain or cause the saw to kickback. Explain how to properly and safely carry, transport and store the chain saw. o The user should grip the front handle in a manner that the machine is balanced horizontally. Keep the hot muffler away from the body and the cutting attachment behind the user.
Parts / Attachments • Address that a bow guide should not be mounted on any STIHL chain saw. Any chain saw equipped with a bow guide is potentially very dangerous. • Properly match the customer’s powerhead with the appropriate bar / chain combination to reduce the risk of kickback injury. • STIHL recommends the use of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake on the powerhead with green labeled reduced kickback bars and low kickback chains. Maintenance • If a customer brings in a product with an unapproved attachment, discuss the issue of unauthorized modifications. Explain the necessary repairs and have the customer sign a waiver before servicing. • Use only genuine STIHL replacement parts for maintenance and repair. Use of nonSTIHL parts may cause serious or fatal injury, potentially shorten the service life of the product and void the limited warranty. • Address how to properly sharpen a chain. A dull or improperly sharpened chain may reduce or negate the effects of the design features intended to reduce kickback energy. • Wear gloves when handling or performing maintenance on saw chains. Always stop the engine and make sure that the chain is stopped before doing any maintenance or repair work or cleaning the power tool. • Remind the customer to keep the chain, bar and sprocket clean; replace worn sprockets or chains. Keep the chain sharp, and tighten all nuts, bolts and screws except the carburetor adjustment screws after each use. • Never try to adjust the chain while the engine is running. Proper tension of the chain is extremely important. In order to avoid improper setting, the tensioning procedure must be followed as described in the manual. • Tell the customer after finishing their work, to slacken off the chain if they have retensioned it at operating temperature during cutting work. The chain contracts as it cools down. If not slackened off, it could damage the crankshaft and bearings. • Remind the customer to only perform the maintenance procedures outlined in the instruction manual. All other maintenance needs to be completed by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. • Do not modify the machine in any way.
