Chapter 3 – Blade Peripherals Access the Cubix Blade Server by removing the BladePoint cover panel and the blade cover panel. Now you have access to the Blade Server to add or replace blade peripheral devices such as an IDE drive or a PCI adapter. Warning: Use an anti-static strap when working with the blade so you do not cause damage to sensitive electronic components. Access a Blade To access a Server Blade inside a BladePoint enclosure, refer to the illustrations and the procedure below: 1. Down the operating system (OS). 2. Power down the BladePoint enclosure. 3. Remove the power cord. 4. Loosen the two twist-lock screws located at each top rear corner of the BladePoint cover panel. See the rear panel illustration above. 5. Remove the cover panel. 6. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws on the Blade cover panel. 7. Remove the cover panel. To install or replace a Blade Server within a BladePoint, use the following procedure: 1. Support the Blade Server with one hand while you guide it into the BladePoint enclosure with your other hand. 2. Push the Blade Server all the way in until it blind mates with the power edge connector at the rear. 3. Tighten the two blade retaining screws at the left and right of the Blade Server (see the illustration below). 4. Connect the power and data cables connected to the CD-ROM / DVD-ROM drive (see the illustration on the previous page). 5. Connect the power cable to the Blade (see the rear panel illustration on the previous page). 6. Connect the power and data cables to the IDE and CD/DVD drives. 7. Use a Phillips screwdriver to replace the four screws on the Blade cover panel. 8. Replace the cover panel. 9. Tighten the two twist-lock screws at the rear of BladePoint cover panel. 10. Connect the power, network and other cables. 11. Power up the BladePoint. Add or Replace Drives The Cubix Blade Server in BladePoint supports one 3.5inch drive at the right of the blade within the enclosure. The XP4 blade provides four IDE connectors near the top of the blade. The connectors nearest the front of the blade are the primary IDE interface for the IDE drive and the connectors farthest from the front are the secondary IDE interface for a CD or DVD drive. Each of the IDE interfaces provides both a 44-pin connector (for 2.5inch drives) and a 40-pin connector (for 3.5-inch parallel IDE drives). Pin 1 for both IDE interfaces is at the top edge of the blade and the front edge of the IDE connector. See the illustration above. Warning: Use only Cubix -provided cables for connection to IDE drives on XP4 blades. The 44-pin interface provides power, which some cables do not support. The SP1 blade provides two SATA data connectors (0 and 1) and one secondary IDE connector to support the CD/DVD drive in BladePoint. If you have one SATA drive, connect one end of the cable to the SATA-0 connector and the other end to the SATA drive. If you have a second SATA drive, use the cable to connect the SATA-1 connector to the drive. See the illustration at the right. To remove a drive, use the following procedure: 1. Remove the BladePoint and blade cover panel. 2. Loosen the drive mounting plate retaining screws (see the illustration on the previous page). 3. Disconnect the power/data cables from the drive. 4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the mounting plate to the IDE drive. To install a drive, use the following procedure: 1. Use a Phillips screwdriver to attach the mounting plate to the drive using the four screws. 2. Connect the power/data cables to the drive tray. 3. Tighten the drive mounting plate retaining screws (see the illustration on the previous page). 4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to connect the two screws holding the mounting plate to the Blade Server top. Install a PCI Adapter To install a PCI adapter, use the following procedure: 1. Remove the BladePoint and blade cover panel. 2. Loosen the blade retaining screws at the front of BladePoint. 3. Pull the blade slightly out from the BladePoint. 4. Loosen the captured screw holding the blank L-bracket from the blade front panel. 5. Insert the adapter in the PCI slot. 6. Tighten the captured screw holding the adapter L-bracket to the blade front panel. 7. Push the blade back into BladePoint. 8. Tighten the blade retaining screws on the blade front panel. 9. Replace the blade and BladePoint cover panel. The Cubix Blade Server provides a either a 3.3V PCI slot for modern, high-speed 64-bit adapters or a 5V PCI slot for legacy 32-bit adapters (see the physical difference between the two PCI slots in the illustration below).
