THE CLARE CHAMPION FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2017 NEWS 9 Checking in for Runway Night Run SHANNON Airport’s Bank of Ireland Runway Night Run is going to take place on June 16. It is expected that 2,000 participants of all grades and ages will gather for the fourth edition of the event, which will raise funds for Cahercalla Community Hospital and Hospice and Home Share Clare. The event will have a new route this year, going around the airport, both landside and airside, ahead of a grandstand finish outside the airport terminal. 2017 will be the fourth year of the event, which has doubled in size since it was first held in 2014. There will also be a corporate challenge, as companies can enter up to 10 staff, with times for the first five finishers accumulating counted and there is an overall team prize for the fastest company. “With such an emphasis on healthy activity, mass participation events are huge today but this one has particular appeal, as it’s such a novel course and we are expecting great interest again this year. We are, therefore, urging those who want to participate to book early and avoid disappointment,” said Shannon Airport managing director Andrew Murphy. “People just love the idea of running at an airport; it’s just so different to typical mass participation events. There’s also great excitement on the night, as we have people arriving up to two hours beforehand to take in the build-up with Mr Motivator, Richie Clifford, leading the warm-up. At the end of it all, it raises much-needed funds for our designated Shannon Group charities, which this year are Cahercalla Community Hospital and Hospice, which provides hospice care for patients with active and progressive diseases, and Home Share Clare, a Brothers of Charity service that provides short respite breaks to adults and children with learning disabilities. So those who join us on the night do so for a very good cause.” People can enter on the Shannon Airport Facebook page or on the Event Master website. Event t-shirts will be provided to all participants at registration on June 15 from 12 noon to 2.30pm and again on the night of the race from 9pm. ■ On the runway at Shannon Airport for the launch of the Runway Night Run were, from left, Andrew Murphy, managing director of Shannon Airport; Sara Hartigan, senior vice-president, UL Bohemians Rugby Club; Irish international rugby captain, Niamh Briggs; Anna Caplice, Irish rugby international and Marie Meehan, Bank of Ireland county manager, Clare. A provisional budget has been approved by the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government to build eight homes at Beech Court, Roslevan, Ennis. These homes will be made up of two two-bedroom single-story homes, five three-bedroom two- storey houses and one four-bedroom two-storey house. A total of €1,248,200 will be allocated to Clare County Council for the construction of these houses, while a further €200,000 will be provided to the local authority for site costs, with the remainder of the funding for technical fees, salaries and utilities. The funding for the eight new homes on a site at Beech Court and Beech View, which already has a housing stock of 48 houses, is being provided under the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness. Minister of State for Employment and Small Business Pat Breen said, “This latest funding for new homes in Ennis follows on from the provision of €3.66m for a links road that will free up land and allow for the construction of 200 new homes at Claureen. This funding will help deliver a mix of private, rental and social housing. “There is a strong pipeline of social housing projects for Clare being provided by both Clare County Council and approved social housing associations for Ennis, Westbury, Quilty, Shannon, Feakle, Clonlara, Sixmilebridge and Doonbeg. “Funding has been committed to all of these projects and while some projects may not be moving as quickly as I would like, I will continue to push for these homes to be built as quickly as possible. “Building a house is a long process, so, in the interim, Clare County Council has also received funding to purchase homes for their housing stock and refurbish houses already in their ownership. Since 2015, Clare County Council has acquired 172 extra houses and refurbished 175 vacant Local Authority homes, having received funding of €2.8m for refurbishment.” So far this year, Clare County Council has already spent in the region of €3.6m on social housing. Learning opportunities for early school leavers EARLY school leavers are being encouraged to take advantage of learning opportunities that have already benefited hundreds of young people across the county. The Community Training Centre (CTC) at Clare Youth Service is now taking applications for its range of programmes commencing in September. The centre has a variety of programmes, which have been specifically developed for unemployed early school leavers aged 16 to 21 years, including linked work experience. Certified programmes include Leaving Cert Applied, QQI Level 3 Employability Skills and QQI Level 4 Pathway to Employment (certified by Quality Qualifications Ireland). The Community Training Centre at Clare Youth Service has equipped more than 1,800 young people from the county with nationally-recognised qualifications and a route to employment since its establishment in the 1980s. Edel McDonough, manager of the CTC, outlines the approach taken. “These programmes are now HS 45, 18” specifically developed to take account of the earners’ needs. They give participants the opportunity to identify and pursue the options that are best suited to them. “During the course of their time at the CTC, each learner is supported by tutors in developing an Individual Learning Plan, which maps out their personal and learning goals for successful achievement of certification. “As part of this, they work with the advocacy service to develop a career path plan with progression options, including a linked work experience programme, further education and training or employment.” As with all Clare Youth Service projects, the CTC places a strong emphasis on personal and social development and learners are encouraged to get involved in other CYS projects and clubs. If you are between 16 and 21 years and interested in achieving certification in a supported environment, contact Edel McDonough at 065 6845359 or ctcadmin@ clareyouthservice.org for further information.
