Churchfields’ Weekly Newsletter Thursday 5 May 2016 Dear Parents We welcome everyone back from the bank holiday with some fabulous news from the Genner family. Twins Clayton and Dorothy (weighing 6lbs 5 & 6lbs 1) were born on Saturday 30th April. Mother and babies are doing well and I am sure we will have photos to share soon! We send them our love and best wishes. Kind regards Mr Futcher BIKEABILITY Reminder to sign up for Bikeability! Tues 21 & Tues 28 June Dauntsey’s Dodecahedron Challenge This course is designed to ensure that children are safe riding their bikes out on the road and replaces cycling proficiency training. It is open to all children who are 10 or over, however priority will be given to those who are in Year 6 and will not get the chance to do it next year. Several children in Years 5 & 6 took part in this maths challenge. Their enthusiasm for working on really hard maths problems was fantastic to see! Children must have their own roadworthy bicycle in order to participate. Top scorer was Charlie Hindmarsh – well done Charlie. Full details and application forms are attached or can be downloaded from the school website. Key Stage 2 SATs Key Stage Two SATS begin on Monday 9th May. Forest School Class Dates We will be immensely grateful if parents of our Year 6 children ensure they arrive at school on time, having eaten breakfast. The summer term dates for our Forest School Days are in the calendar – remember to check to see when your child’s class is doing Forest School. The staff will ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible. Children need to bring in their Forest School clothes, which should include a waterproof, long trousers and sturdy shoes or boots. A reminder that information for parents about both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 SATs is available on our website. HELP! REMINDER Our Lost Property boxes are still overflowing. Please make sure all consent forms & fees are handed in on time for the after-school clubs. Club providers may refuse to allow your child/ren to participate if there is any outstanding paperwork or fees have not been paid. Any questions, please contact the school office. PLEASE come and have a sort through, you never know what long-lost treasures you might find. Perseus and Medusa Kestrel Class have been studying Greek myths. One of our favourites is the story of Perseus and Medusa, and we particularly enjoyed Christian’s retelling of the end of the myth. Perseus and Medusa The valley loomed menacingly at Perseus, reeling him in, tempting him to look around the corner. Sound was still and chilled as he stepped cautiously through needles of bracken which smothered the ground in a prison of thorns, buried in with no escape. As the valley twisted, Perseus saw stone people dotted along the landscape, shadowing the ground with their loom. A jolt hit Perseus. Those figures were alive. Every one of them. Just encased in a cocoon of stone from which there was no escape. Some men and women’s mouths were still open – screaming for eternity. Every person seemed to be photographed and held captive in the last second of their lives. A small child was holding the hand of its mother keeping its everlasting grip while burly soldiers all had fingers over their eyes; desperate for a peek at Medusa. Suddenly a carnivorous mouth of the cave opened and yawned casting a breeze, swaying the gloomy valley. Gripping his shield, he slowly crept along the grass, venturing onto the tongue of the cave. Holding his breath, Perseus stepped out of the darkness and showed his figure to the army of lifeless stone people. “Medusa!” cried Perseus to the deserted cave. “Medusa, I am Perseus, the slayer of monsters! And I have come to kill you!” A silence swallowed the cavern. Suddenly a deathly hiss filled the space as an inhuman figure slid across the uneven floor, stepping into the light and showing herself: it was Medusa. “You believe you can slay me? I’ve met many a vain killer but not one as foolish as you.” Perseus’ head immediately snapped sideways to his shield – he couldn’t look into her eyes otherwise he would never wake from the forever nightmare of stone. “Look into my eyes…” she soothed, “Come and gaze upon your destiny…” He began to sweat. “You know you want to – just look deep into my consoling eyes.” Her voice became a hiss of annoyance as Perseus stolidly stared (as Athena had instructed) at the brightly polished shield. “Look…look…” tortured Medusa. His brain suddenly whirred. He could look, just to check he was on target. But the he stopped. Taking a deep breath, he did what came naturally: he swung the sword. A fountain of blood suddenly exploded from Medusa’s neck. The grim trophy was stuffed into the sack. The monster was gone forever. It is designed to develop road sense, awareness of traffic and to improve your child’s ability to ride safely. Most of the training takes place on the road. The training is currently Government grant funded enabling approx 10 hours cycling tuition for a charge of £5.00 (to cover admin, badges, booklets and certificates). The course is aimed at pupils aged 10 years and over. Churchfields, The Village School -Tuesday 21st & Tuesday 28th June. If you would like your child to attend please return the attached form and £5.00 fee to school not later than: Wednesday 25 May. Cycling Ability Trainees must be able to ride a bike before starting the course, this includes the ability to control the bicycle and maintain balance whilst giving hand signals and being able to use gears if fitted. Bikes Although a basic safety check is carried out during the first session, it is your responsibility to ensure that the bike is roadworthy, safe and the right size for the child. You will be notified of any faults and your child may be unable to continue on the course until the faults are rectified. We therefore strongly recommend that bikes are checked before the start of the course. Dress Courses will go ahead regardless of the weather (unless it becomes unsafe) therefore trainees should be dressed accordingly. Shower proof coats available in school if required and gloves with grip are a good idea except in the warmest of weather. Cycle Helmets It is important that helmets are fitted and worn correctly. Behaviour Our first priority is the safety of the pupils. A pupil, who disrupts the course so that their safety or the safety of anyone else is put at risk, will not be allowed to continue with the course. The school will be notified of the decision and the reason for the exclusion. The course covers the basics of safe cycling. It does not guarantee pupils are safe to cycle in traffic. Your child will need practice even after completing the course to develop their skills further and consolidate what has been taught. Before you let your child ride on the road please discuss this with them and agree areas where it is safe for them to cycle. Further Information Please contact your school for course arrangement information. If the school cannot help with your enquiry please refer to the Road Safety contact details provided at the bottom of this page. Insurance The Authority does not maintain any personal accident cover, and is only insured against its legal liability to third parties (i.e. they have to prove the negligence of the Authority) if they are injured or their property is damaged during any cycle training organised and approved by the Road Safety Team. Parents/carers of pupils participating in cycle training are advised to make their own arrangements to insure their children against personal accident and loss or damage to their cycles or other personal effects. Feedback We endeavour to provide the best possible training to pupils and welcome comments on the training received so that we can continue to improve the service we offer. Pupils will therefore be asked to complete a feedback form. We hope you will support us in this matter.
