LONGER LIFE FILTERS FOR LED A new concept in LED filter design Regular lighting filter can often quickly fade when used with LED lights – the Zircon range is different. With a lifespan of up to 200 times longer than standard filters and at more than double the thickness (180 microns), Zircon filters are not only slower to fade, they are durable and easy to use, too. There are 12 filters in the Zircon range; the five Minus Green filters remove the green casts often associated with LED lighting when using a digital camera. The four Warm Amber filters correct a range of different color temperature white LEDs so that they appear like Tungsten. While the three Diffusion filters offer different strengths of diffusion specifically designed for LEDs.

THE BOYS ARE BACK: ENTOURAGE HITS THE BIG SCREEN As soon as Entourage, finished its eight-year run on HBO in 201l, rumors of a feature film began swirling. This summer, the boys are back, but on the big screen this time, as Vinny Chase (Adrian Grenier) makes his feature directorial debut. The project reunites director/creator Doug Ellin and cinematographer Steven Fierberg, ASC. Fierberg (The Affair, Secretary, Love and Other Drugs) shot the first 25 episodes of the show, setting a di tinctive look that was built around the ensemble nature of most scenes, subtly underscoring a blend of comedy and drama that audiences loved. “Entourage is meant to look real,” says Fierberg. “The actors are not glamorized. Doug never asks whether it’s funny – he asks whether it’s true. And that’s one of the reasons we work well together. The lighting should always look like it does in life – natural.” That’s not to say the series look – a documentary-style camera reacting to the action as if it were unfolding organically – remained identical when Entourage made the leap to the big screen. “When we started in 2004, nobody was doing handheld like we did, and now everybody is,” says Fierberg. “It was the right choice at the time, but I didn’t want to bore the audience. I wanted to challenge the audience. We shot the feature with a more dramatic approach, using more crane shots, dollying and wide lenses than we ever did on the series. And almost no handheld. It turned out to be exactly the right thing to do.”
6
There was never a question as to the capture medium. As he had on the series, Fierberg used 35mm film. “Doug asked me what would make the women look their best,” says Fierberg. “There’s no question in my mind that film is more flattering, and it allows the audience to emotionally connect more easily with the characters. I’m convinced that it’s harder for audiences to make that connection with something shot digitally. The format was 3-perf spherical. Fierberg felt that anamorphic would lend the images an abstraction that would diminish the cinematic realism he was after. The lenses were generally Cookes, and occasionally, a Fujinon 18-85 mm zoom. “The Cookes are sharp but very flattering, and the Fujinon is a gorgeous lens but unbelievably sharp,” he says. “In combination with film, the Fujinon looked great, but with digital it might be too sharp for portraiture. Film is very forgiving. Film grain is soft and lush, like the actress’s face.” “Kodak spent a 100 years developing the science to make faces look good,” he says. “Think of the shot in Casablanca where the camera pushes in on Ingrid Bergman as she turns to the lens for her close-up. You’re emotionally overwhelmed by that gorgeous image. That’s what film does. That’s what makes us go to the movies – we want to emotionally connect.” You can see Entourage in theaters now.

CINE GEAR EXPO LEGACY LIFETIME AWARD TO BOB FISHER Bob Fisher was born and raised in Brooklyn. He earned a journalism degree from Long Island University in 1958. Fisher worked for a local newspaper for six months until the Draft Board invited him to spend two years in the army . He served as the base journalist at the Womens Army Corps Training Center in Anniston, Alabama. That experience gave him a different view of the world. Several weeks before he was scheduled to complete his military obligation, Fisher answered an ad for a six-month job in Los Angeles. He was hired to interview 40 members of the American Society of Cinematographers and write a tribute book that was presented to a member of the film industry who was retiring. Fisher estimates that he has subsequently written between 3,000 and 4,000 magazine articles about cinematographers and other narrative and documentary filmmakers. His work has taken him to all 50 states and 17 countries around the world. He was made an honorary member of ASC in 2003. Fisher is

one of seven living honorary members. Four of the others are astronauts. Fisher and Italian journalist Lorenzo Codelli recently coauthored “The Art of Cinematography”, a book envisioned by Vittorio Storaro, ASC, AIC . Each of them wrote profiles of 75 cinematographers dating back to the dawn of the industry, including how they and one of their films influence the art form. There are also a number of essays describing the evolution of the art form, an array of images that illustrate the words and a DVD with shots from all of the films featured in profiles The Cine Gear Expo Legacy Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Fisher on friday evening, June 5 during the VIP Awards Reception at The Paramount Theater Paseo Grounds.

Cinetech Italiana Premieres new Lightweight Dolly www.cinetech.it Cinetech Italiana has chosen Cine Gear Expo 2015 for the world premiere of their new lightweight dolly, Capinera. After observing the innovations, changes and challenges of today’s productions involving smaller crews, smaller vehicles, smaller cameras and zooms, Cinetech came up with the new dolly. Capinera compliments Cinetech’s other existing products, since there are still many situations in productions where heavier cameras and lenses are used and require classic camera dollies. Cinetech designed Capinera to allow visual storytellers to achieve their creative goals by focusing on safety, freedom, and building it lightweight with a small footprint - to reach as many locations as possible. For decades they have worked to improve the features and the design of its dollies to better serve the people who use them every day.

The Park is Open: Jurassic World John Schwartzman, ASC recently collaborated with director Colin Trevorrow to bring movie fans the next Jurassic installment - Jurassic World, which is in theaters next week. Schwartzman proposed shooting on film. “I knew the contrast ratios of day exteriors in Hawaii (where production began), and almost everything we were going to shoot in Hawaii was day exterior,” he says. “We were there for the big vistas and the scope, and for all of the things that you can’t do on stage. Nothing else was going to capture the 18,000 footcandles in the highlights of the sky, and the 20 footcandles in the shadows of the jungle, in the same shot. I didn’t have to choose to preserve either the highlights or the shadows. I knew that if I placed my exposure where I thought it should be, I was going to have all of that information there.” Many interior scenes were filmed on set in Louisiana. In addition to shooting the majority of the film on 4-perf 35mm, Schwartzman shot roughly 150,000 feet of 5-perf 65mm film to take advantage of the additional dynamic range and resolution. “I used the 65mm camera if I knew I had a wide shot

in which we were either going to change the background or introduce dinosaurs,” he says. “Why not give ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) the master shot on a format so large that they could do a move across it if they wanted to? In Hawaii, we would generally use the 65mm for our master. When we went in for the coverage, I would go to 35mm.” ILM, the venerable effects house that brought the dinosaurs to life, approved, says Schwartzman. “They wanted the dynamic range, and all the subtlety and color gamut that negative film has versus digital. I knew that Panavision had refurbished 65mm cameras for P.T. Anderson and Mihai Malaimare on The Master.” Trevorrow, known for Safety Not Guaranteed, is now a convert, according to the cinematographer. “We shot our 65mm tests at Panavision, sent the negative over the FotoKem, and saw it projected the next day,” he says. “It was like, ‘Oh, my god. Why aren’t we doing this on every movie?’”

CINE GEAR EXPO NEWS 2015
ENVIRONMENT IS KEY FOR CLAUDIO MIRANDA, ASC Claudio Miranda, ASC, shot the groundbreaking: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Life of Pi (for which he received an Oscar® for Best Cinematography), Oblivion and Tomorrowland.
Claudio Miranda, ASC, is known for embracing new technology to produce his hallmark imagery. One process he’s been pioneering on recent projects takes its roots from the first silent films—a 21st century reinterpretation of classic rear screen projection and poor man’s process. The results are both eye-catching and ground breaking. By mixing projection and flexible LED screens with pre-shot media, Miranda is providing cast and crew the benefit of working inside seamless, photo-realistic environments while on stage. For Disney’s Tomorrowland, Miranda reached out to DPS Cinema for the technical support and assistance in building his largest media enhanced environment to date.
On stage, I believe that actors are always more comfortable being in an “ environment that’s lit appropriately, and the best way you can do that is to kind of put them in that environment. LED walls give you that flexibility. If you have the backgrounds preshot, you can actually place the talent in a lighting environment that is photo real, and the whole thing grounds itself to reality. I feel it’s just the best way to make people stick to the surfaces they’re supposed to be on. Plus the pace of production is unbelievably fast. On this project, instead of rotating the set, we kept the camera in the same position and then rotated the stage platform and media. That made it much more efficient for us.

SUPER 8 STILL IN DEMAND AS IT TURNS 50 The format that provided the creative testing grounds for many filmmakers and captured their first endeavors in motio pictures – including such mainstream Hollywood icons as J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, Tim Burton, Peter Jackson, Michael Bay, Christopher Nolan, and numerous others – is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, and shows no signs of slowing down. Super 8 remains a beloved capture medium for a variety of applications that elicits a distinctive nostalgic look, encourages experimentation, and drives creative exploits like no other format to date. It started in 1965 when Eastman Kodak Company introduced Super 8mm, a revolutionary new format that utilized an improved cartridge system that is still used today. It transformed the home movie phenomenon of the 1950s, and soon everyone was a filmmaker “8mm cameras were originally made for consumers, but evolved from being a home movie format into an educational tool as well as a professional production option,” notes Rhonda Vigeant, owner and marketing director for Pro8mm, a company that has passionately served the 8mm community since 1981. “The format continues to be used by amateurs, professionals, film fanatics and some of the world’s most famous filmmakers. Super 8mm has made a strong mark in the entertainment industry. Features, television shows, commercials, music videos, documentaries, branded entertainment content and extreme

sports footage have relied on the small gauge film. Its unique look can be seen on recent episodes of American Horror Story, American Idol, The Americans and Aquarius. Super 8’s feature credits include the Oscar®-winning JFK and Argo, as well as The Dictator, Super 8, The Fighter, and the upcoming I Saw the Light. The recent documentaries Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Brand: A Second Coming depended on 8mm to stitch their stories together. The allure of this analog format elicits fond memories for a wide range of people who grew up shooting Super 8. Vigeant adds, “Super 8 film has also captured the attention of a new generation wanting a more permanent format for recording some of life’s milestones, as well as filmmakers who want to continue the tradition of shooting films on film. There is a understanding that in our digital world, an analog reel of film is the only proven archival medium.” Kodak’s Andrew Evenski, president and general manager of Entertainment & Commercial Films, echoes that sentiment. “Super 8 has defied obscurity. It launched many filmmakers careers, captured some of life’s most important moments, and has preserved art for five decades. These are the same reasons Super 8 endures today, and will remain a strong format of choice in the future.”

Hive’s Wasp Pars and Killer Maxis were used to light the subway scenes of “Cineastes,” a Cine Gear Film Festival finalist. Hive’s lighting solution did not require cables or a generator underground. Cinematographer John Lazear felt lights were necessary to separate the actors from the background, as the film was shot in black and white. Gaffer Doug Cragoe introduced Lazear to Hive’s bright, colorbalanced plasma lights that, most importantly for this shoot, are capable of running off car batteries. “I was very happy with the intensity and control I had over these lights,” said Lazear. “With no cables, they were quick and easy to set up. We were able to bring up the walls in the background and separate the actors exactly as I wanted.”

With a lifespan of up to 200 times longer than standard lighting filter, the new Zircon range of 12 colors, from LEE Filters is designed to last. Lighting has many benefits, but one of its stumbling blocks is that its intensity can contribute to the fade times of standard lighting filters. In order to overcome this, the LEE Filters Research and Development team established a new method of production, to ensure filters last longer when used in conjunction with LED lights. Zircon filters not only last longer than their standard counterparts, they’re also sturdier. Manufactured using a 180-micron material, they are more than double the thickness of a normal lighting filter. This makes them more durable and easy-to-use.

The Camslide length is extendable, meaning it can be made as long as a filmmaker wishes, a first for the industry. Joining rails is quick and camera loads up to 300 pounds are possible. Also, the high power 100,000 lumen LED 1.0, launched at NAB 2013, now has two younger siblings, the X25 and X50. Reflex’s two new LED space lights that are in development will be quietly shown to interested parties at Cine Gear. The X25 produces 11,000 lumens and the X50 22,000 lumens.

VidOvation, a leading manufacturer of video, audio and data communications systems, announces the unveiling of two new broadcast-grade wireless video links. The new VidOlink Reacher and VidOlink Ranger are the answer to the emergent demand for reliable, high-quality wireless video transmission. The VidOlink Reacher wirelessly extends up to 2,000 feet with zero latency and no compression, and the VidOlink Ranger can go up to a mile with line of sight.
The growing demand for undersized carts is here to stay, and the Studio Carts team has stepped in to take on the task of innovation. Their new Mini Cable/Sandbag Cart has earned its stature. It can hold apple boxes, milk crates, cable or sand bags within its carriage bed. The new C-Stand Mini Quad has all the qualities of their famous Quad Cart but is substantially lighter with a reduced footprint. The creative technical team has pushed the boundaries and refined some of their most popular carts. For instance, the Quad Cart has been fitted with four female inserts; this allows two low C-stands and two turtle stands to be added to the existing structure of the cart without altering its size.
MyCaseBuilder.com is a website where users can design custom cut foam inserts for all their gear. With its easy-to-use online design program, anyone can customize a case to their specific needs. MyCaseBuilder.com makes it easy with templates for cameras and accessories in their shape library. The site also offers its Photo Tracer tool to create custom foam for specialized gear and uniquely shaped or ready-to-shoot equipment. Customers simply take a picture of any item from directly above it, and import the photo into the MyCaseBuilder.com app. The program tools let users trace around the outline to create the custom design, or the program can do it leaving adjustable points after.

Marshall’s new full HD Lipstick Camera is built around a high-performing 2 megapixel single chip 1/3-inch sensor and 3.6mm lens. At 2-inches long and 3/4-inch diameter, the CV200-MB is ideal for vehicle mounts, hidden-cameras, sports-cast, weather-cast and any applications requiring an all-weather, broadcast-quality video camera. Internal camera components are sealed with an IP-67 weatherproof body allowing it to withstand extreme weather conditions. The CV200-MB offers fast 59.94 frame-rates in full HD 1080i-1080p-720p HDSDI(3G) video plus broadcast adjustments such as white balance, gamma, gain, shutter, color and other video settings not found in other POV cameras. “We are very excited to add the CV200 Lipstick Camera to our POV Pro-Series camera line,” says Tod Musgrave, director of Product Marketing-POV Pro Series. “Early adoption includes professional racing circuits where the CV200 is being mounted to bumpers, dashboards, and windshields for off road and track racing.”
SUMOLIGHT has been developing their revolutionary SUMOSPACE for the last few years. It is a bi-color LED fixture that matches the output of a tungsten 6K space light. With its interchangeable optics, the light can be intensified up to 13,000 lux at a 3 meter distance. It has high color accuracy (TLCI 99, CRI 95) for daylight, and tungsten is passively cooled without any fans or moving parts weighing only 5.5kg. It was developed by painstakingly creating super-compact, ultra-lightweight, fully-digitally controlled electronics, with an unmatched efficiency of 98%. SUMOLIGHT calculates and manufactures their optics for best efficiency and to offer the possibility of changing the beam angle. The SUMOSPACE saves a tremendous amount of energy for productions and makes the job of DPs and gaffers much easier.
To highlight the partnership between Gratical HD and Next Generation Recoil Rigs, Zacuto is offering unprecedented bundle savings. The purchase of a Gratical HD includes a Recoil Rig for as low as $200, as much as $1,000 in savings. Zacuto trusts in the Recoil system and is confident in the positive experience users will have with the rig and EVF combination. Recoil Rigs are developed with an emphasis on balance. Their balance point is directly over the shoulder, pushing focus and monitoring further forward, creating a lighter and shorter rig. The Gratical HD is an integral piece of any Recoil Rig. This new EVF incorporates the latest in micro-OLED and processing technology and offers professional features including HDMI and SDI with cross-conversion, vectorscope, waveform (3D), histogram, LUT import and creation, and more.

Band Pro will present a free screening of BARAKA projected in 65mm on Friday 6/5/2015 at 1:00 PM in the Sherry Lansing Theater. A Q&A with Producer Mark Magidson will follow the film, moderated by Jon Fauer. Shot in 25 countries on six continents, Baraka is a series of stunningly photographed scenes that capture what director Ron Fricke calls “a guided mediation on humanity.” Critic Roger Ebert once wrote: “If man sends another Voyager to the distant stars and it can carry only one film on board, that film might be Baraka.”

Science of the Beautiful
TM
CION is AJA’s new 4K/UltraHD and 2K/HD production camera, carefully crafted to leverage the best technology available, designed to be logical, powerful, and classically familiar. CION offers incredible image control for all types of production, including “flat” shooting modes. But CION can shoot the world it sees, the way we see it, directly in-camera which results in a minimum of post-production correction. It draws upon timeless ways of shooting, the artfulness of image capture, where light, color and nature merge to create a deep filmic richness, but with the incredible speed and convenience of a digital workflow. 4K Sensor with 12 Stops of Dynamic Range ProRes 444 and 422 Recording AJA Raw output up to 4K 120fps Interchangeable PL Lens Mount Ergonomic and Lightweight Open Connectivity
