Drucker Mayor The Solon Service Department, in conjunction with the Solon Civic Club, will be hosting Solon’s 2nd Annual America Recycles Day celebration. This family friendly event will be held on Saturday November 15th from 9 am to 3 pm at the Solon Community Center. Sign the recyclying pledge and enter a contest to receive FREE mulch or compost! America Recycles Day is a nationally recognized day to raise awareness on the importance of recycling. Solon Service Department and Solon Civic Club representatives will host educational sessions and displays, have games and activities for children, and present recycling facts and figures. Artwork by Solon’s 3rd graders, depicting how their family recycles at home, will be displayed. Used footwear of any kind will be collected for donation to Souls 4 Souls and Volunteers of America in Aurora. The Summer Camp is for pre-kindergarten to fourth grade (child must be 5 years old and no older than 12 on their first day of camp). The Adventure Camp is for current fifth and sixth grade students(child must be 12 years old or younger on their first day of camp). Camp consists of sports, swimming, activities, field trips and more! The schedules and activities are age-appropriate. A tentative calendar for 2015 will be available at the Solon Community Center or on-line after February 15. The Camper Handbook, calendar, and registration information will be posted at www.solonohio.org. If you have further questions, please call Tracy at (440) 248-5747. SUMMER AND ADVENTURE CAMP REGISTRATION March 7 – 14, 2015 **ONE WEEK ONLY!!** Registration Days and Times Saturday: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday through Friday: 3:30 pm - 7:00 pm NO SUNDAY REGISTRATION! Registration Information Registration begins at the Solon Community Center on Saturday, March 7 at 8:00 am and ends on Saturday, March 14. There is a limit of 110 campers per session in Adventure Camp. Any child registered during this week for the K-4 Summer Camp is guaranteed a spot. Any child registered after March 14 will be placed on a waiting list.You will only be called if a spot becomes available. **Please note: registration is accepted for only ONE WEEK. Summer Camp Counselor The Recreation Department is looking for people interested in becoming summer camp counselors. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by June 8, 2015 and want to work with children and peers. All applicants under the age of 18 must provide a work permit from the Solon High School office once hired. CPR, FIRST AID & AED certification is required by the first day of camp. The Recreation Department will provide a select number of classes for these certifications. All applications must be submitted between November 1, 2014 and January 31, 2015. If you have any questions about this position, call Tracy Sullivan at the Recreation Department, (440) 248-5747. 5 SOLON COMMUNITY CENTER BANQUET HALL AND MEETING ROOM RENTALS Whether planning an important business meeting, family party, wedding reception, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, First Communion, birthday party, baby or bridal shower, the Solon Community Center is the ideal location. Conveniently and centrally located, the Solon Community Center is reasonably priced and is geared for a variety of personal and business functions. The community center features three meeting rooms along a large banquet hall and a fully equipped catering kitchen. Parties being held on Friday and Saturday must conclude by 12:00 am. Functions being held Sunday through Thursday must conclude by 11:00 pm. Banquet Hall The banquet hall can be rented as one large room to accommodate up to 240 people based on set-up, or it can be separated into three separate rooms. Each individual banquet room can accommodate up to 75 people based on set-up. The banquet hall opens to a beautiful terrace, which is ideal for cocktails, dining alfresco or just for conversation. All three banquet rooms have drop-down ceiling screens for audio-visual presentations and come equipped with a PA system and internet service. Audio-visual equipment is available for groups to rent. The Solon Community Center provides tables and chairs and the renter is responsible for all event decorations. Renters must complete a Rental Contract and provide a $300 refundable security deposit when booking a room. Upon conclusion, the renter will receive a security deposit refund unless damage has been caused. The Solon Community Center allows renters to use the caterer of their choice. Alcohol is permitted at functions. If alcohol is being served or if a party takes place on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights, then a security officer must be present. The Recreation Department will secure the officer from the Solon Police Department, and the renter is responsible to pay the officer at the conclusion of the function. (The hourly rate is set and is subject to change by the Solon Police Department.) Banquet Facility Rental Rates Prices are subject to change. The Play Feature will be turned on at the last ½ hour of toddler swim. 7 American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification The Solon Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. This version contains the latest science in First Aid, CPR for the PR, AED, emergency cardiovascular care (ECC), rescue skills and safety protocols. This improved course will help potential lifeguards to concentrate on the basic skills and rescue situations that are most likely to occur on the job. As a pre-requisite the participants must be able to swim 12 lengths of the pool efficiently and be able to submerge to a depth of 12 feet. Registration is currently taking place at the SCC. Princess Anna along with Kristoff and his reindeer Sven set off on a journey to find Anna’s older sister, Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped their kingdom in eternal winter. They encounter extreme cold conditions and a hilarious snowman named Olaff, as they hurry to save the kingdom.The movie will start as close to 6:00 pm as possible. We will have a coloring table set up for those that do not want to swim. Bring your suits and sit in the pool. Regular pool programming will end at 6:00 pm. FROZEN will be shown for all Solon Community Center Members and Guests on December 30 at 6:00 pm at the SCC Indoor Pool. This event is FREE to all members. This program also offers the opportunity to play some organized games after a couple weeks of drills and instruction. 1st and 2nd graders will be separated. When registering sign up for 9 am, 10 am or 11 am. DAY DATE FEE Sat. 1/10-2/14 $50 GRADES 3 - 8 New for this year, we will be playing with neighboring communities. Girls in grades 3-5 will be in the Minors and girls in grades 5-7 will be in the Majors. All players will go through an evaluation and draft. Children learn the basics of dribbling, passing, shooting and defense, utilizing fun drills designed to teach good fundamentals to such young children. Teams play a short scrimmage game at the end of each session. Middle School Boys Basketball League Coaching: All practices and instruction will be conducted by Jump Start Sports basketball staff coaches, but parents are welcome to assist in the coaching. One parent from each team will be designated as a Head Coach, but he or she will not be expected to plan or run the instruction. Jump Start Sports staff coaches will also supervise each game and/or scrimmage. GRADES 7 - 8 League evaluations will be held Sunday, November 16 at 12:00 pm at the Community Center. The league will end in early March. Volunteer coaches needed for this league. See you at “The Q”. 9 SOLON COMMUNITY CENTER FENCING / ADULT ACTIVITIES Adult Open Volleyball Beginner Foil Fencing AGES 8 AND UP En Garde...Come and join Tom Nagy, the Head Coach of the ON TARGET Fencing Team, in learning the fundamentals and techniques of Foil Fencing. Boys and girls will learn the proper aspects of stretching, footwork, lunges, attack, strategy, tactics, bouting and parry-riposte. Foil fencing has a positive effect and improves eye hand coordination, agility, dexterity and stamina. Education, safety and fun are key elements of the class. All equipment is provided. Students will learn basic rules and principles, tactical themes and checkmate patterns in a supportive setting. Intro to Movement (Ages 3 - 4) Pointe (Ages 14 - Adult) This fun and exciting class was designed to introduce young students to a form of self-expression and imagination through movement! Students will improve basic coordination and rhythm while learning to dance. Once students have mastered proper alignment, technique and strength, pointe work will begin. Students eligible for this class must be enrolled concurrently in at least one upper-level Ballet class at SCA. Creative Movement (Ages 4 - 6) Beginning Jazz/Hip Hop (Ages 5 - 10), Jazz/Hip Hop II (Ages 10 - 13) Creative Movement introduces children to the basics of ballet, tap and creative forms of movement. Students will learn to express themselves through movement as well as develop a sense of grace, coordination and rhythm in a focused and fun environment. Dance Combo I (Ages 5 - 7), Dance Combo II (Ages 7 - 9), Dance Combo III (Ages 9 - 12) If you want to explore multiple styles of dance, Dance Combo is for you! This exciting program, which takes place Monday through Friday from 2:45 pm - 4:30 pm throughout the school year, is comprised of classes in Music, Theater, Art and Movement. Students are bussed from Solon City Schools and provided a snack upon arrival. The 2014 - 2015 school year’s program is currently completely full. Drawing upon their expertise and 46 years of history in the field of Music Therapy, the Settlement sends a Board Certified Music Therapist to SCA to create music experiences for individuals of all ages with special needs and/or medical issues. Both individual and group sessions are available. Music therapy sessions are built around the strengths and interests of each client. For young children, a tailored program can include singing, movement, songwriting, dramatization, improvisation, listening, and instrument playing. For school-aged children, engaging music therapy sessions are custom-designed to provide support and practice for goals such as task-orientation, communication, and behavioral control in school, at home or in the community. Adapted instruction is offered on piano, guitar, drums, and other instruments. Completion of an intake form and an assessment are required prior to registration.
