, Your CJ 17 Participant Menu June 2017 – Version 2 Meal Planning Fuel Purchase Meals can be one of the highlights at a Jamboree if you make them special. Invite a friend from another patrol, or your subcamp Service Scouter. Plan a special meal to thank your Scouters or to celebrate a birthday. You plan it, make it happen, and then review it as a patrol to see if you would have done anything differently. 16 oz Disposable Propane cylinders will be available for sale at the Quartermaster. 20 lb Propane Tanks will be available for rent and exchange or refill through the Quartermaster. Patrols bringing their own tanks should have the Unit Name and Number clearly marked on the tanks. 1 lb Propane canisters will be available for sale as will white gas (Naphtha) in sealed containers. Cooking on lightweight equipment may be a new experience for many participants, so it is important that all patrol members practice cooking the food on the suggested menu when you have your Jamboree Pre-Camp, before you arrive at the Jamboree. TIP: Pick up a copy of Field Book for Canadian Scouting from your Scout Shop for more tips and advice on setting up your kitchen. There will be a wide variety of fresh food products available for pick up at the grocery depot on site that align with the suggested menu. Don’t forget your grocery bags! The menu is pre-planned in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide. Dry goods/condiments may be brought with the Patrol. Plan ahead of time when you need to pick up food from the Grocery Depot, as there may be volumes of people at certain times. As your patrol has to store food between meals and overnight, make sure that you have a container to store food in, particularly overnight. When cooking, remember that NO OPEN FIRES ARE PERMITTED. We highly recommend that propane be your fuel of choice for all cooking stoves. While you are eating, the water will come to the boil and you will be ready to clean up immediately after your meal is finished. Camping at the Jamboree site requires special precautions concerning storage of food in order to avoid attracting animals. Bears, Skunks, Foxes, Raccoons, and Squirrels are all attracted by the smell of food. Do not, through carelessness, invite furry visitors to your Patrol campsite. Observe the following precautions: In accordance with sound health practices, wash dishes in hot soapy water; rinse in hot clear water; then pass through hot water with a small amount of bleach (or other disinfectant) added. Then cover dishes with a clean cloth and let air-dry. Use phosphate free detergent as, unlike soap, it requires only a small quantity to work up good suds. The secret to effective cleaning of pots and pans is to use very hot water, so be very careful when you’re doing the dish washing. Your Subcamp Service Scouter will be closely checking on patrol food handling and dish washing practices throughout the Jamboree, and will be available to give you guidance in safe food preparation and proper dish washing if needed. • After each meal, be certain that your Patrol campsite is clear of all food scraps and open containers. • Do not keep any food, candy or chips, in your pockets or in your pack inside your tent as they could attract animals. • Place any mint flavoured toothpaste in sealed plastic bags when you’re not using it. • Before dark, place any coolers with your patrol food in a designated area away from your tents. Staples such as salt & pepper, dry foods that do not have strong odors (such as rice, macaroni, oatmeal) or unopened canned goods can be kept in a sealed container in your camp kitchen. -3- Grey Water Disposal Ice For Food Preservation All grey water will be disposed of through the use of holding tanks which will be equipped with a filter system to prevent large food pieces, or personal utensils, from entering the waste water system. Make sure all large food pieces are scraped of dishes and pots before washing. This food must be placed in compost containers in accordance with Garbage and Recycling practices. No grey water is to be dumped anywhere other than the designated holding tanks. Ice (in cubes and blocks) will be available to purchase from the Quartermaster. Make sure that food is kept in tightly sealed containers and under ice to avoid wastage. You should bring a cooler with your unit gear, though you will be able to rent coolers from the Quartermaster by booking in advance. Details will be posted on the CJ’17 web site. -5- Recycling And Garbage Disposal As always, our goal at any Jamboree is to make it the most environmentally friendly ever. To achieve this, we all need to work together and the most important thing that each one of us can do is to reduce the amount of garbage and recyclables that each of us generates. Each patrol and scout can help through good planning of meals and by using reusable containers whenever possible. For example, take cloth/reusable shopping bags to get your groceries. Waste products left after a meal should sorted into material that can be recycled (such as cardboard, paper products), and food waste that can be composted. The Province of Nova Scotia has excellent recycling and garbage disposal practices, which we will follow. At numerous locations around the Jamboree (such as at St. Andrew’s Plaza; in the program areas; and at the Trading Post) you will see recycling and garbage stations with bins clearly labelled for sorting recyclable items. Please make sure you practice good stewardship of our environment. Fire Buckets will be clearly marked and must not be used for garbage. This is a Fire Safety issue. Water Supply The primary water system for the Jamboree Subcamps will consist of potable water that will be available on site for your use. Taps are located within easy carrying distance of each patrol camp site. Water must be carried, in containers that you bring, from the taps to your campsite. No drinking or washing is to be done at the taps. It is important that water not be wasted. Turn taps off when you have filled your water container. -6-
