Case Study OREGON BROADCASTER STREAMLINES THEIR TRAFFIC REPORTING WITH APANTAC HDMI CLEAN SWITCH AND SCAN CONVERTER KGW Channel 8 is the NBC Television affiliate in Portland, Oregon, the 23rd largest market in the United States was faced with the challenge of reporting live traffic in a city with rapidly growing traffic and population. The engineering team at KGW worked closely with local Portland technology provider, Apantac to find a compact and cost-effective solution. Rather than building a traditional broadcast truck, the KGW team built a company vehicle using a Subaru and a flypack. This unit uses two GoPro cameras to gather live traffic images, and together with Apantac’s Clean HDMI Switch, is able to seamlessly cut from camera to camera. Instead of using a traditional video switcher, the traffic reporter has a simple hand-held remote control, which allows him or her to switch between all the live camera feeds. The output of HDMI switch is fed into an Apantac Scan Converter, which provides a 1080i 59.94 steam to an encoder, which is then sent back to the main television station. SDI OUT to Encoder

The CLN-SW-6x1-H is 6x1HDMI switch that not only provides clean/seamless switching, it also has built-in audio delay up to 70 ms to accomodate the lip sync when necessary. The up/down/cross conversion comes in very handy when there are different sources that comes from various devices. There are seven predefined presets that can provide features such as picture in picture and picture by picture. The US-3500 is not only a scan converter that can work with signals from composite, VGA, DVI to HDMI and output various SMPTE standard SDI video with genlock, it can also embedded analog audio from the microphone into the HDMI input stream and output SDI with embedded audio. The user interface is very simple. All settings can be accessed with the front panel. 1
