. . . Affordable, Reliable, Powerful and Feature Rich . . . OVERVIEW ClusStor 918-SA is the ideal network storage appliance device providing solutions for personal, remote offices, small businesses, departmental, and enterprise storage needs. It serves the purposes of: Sharing/Serving Files, Backup Device as an alternative to Tape Drive, and Archiving-Storage, etc. It also standardizes an embedded iSCSI target function, allowing remote/network storage appear “as if” a local physical disk (block device) dedicated to specific host for typical blocking device applications.
Combining NAS/iSCSI into one single device gives users the freedom to choose the best storage solutions for their network environment and applications. SYSTEM OS & RELIABILITY FEATURE • • • • • • •

DATA PROTECTION & BACKUP PCBackup utility included for client PC/Laptop backup. It provides: Scheduled, Block-Level/File-Based, Multiple versioning backup to protect client PC/Laptop’s files, unlimited client license. ClusStor Replicator included for NAS-to-NAS Folder/Files Replication over LAN, WAN or VPN/Internet for remote data redundancy. It is Scheduled and Block-Level/File-Based with Versioning. Volume Snapshot included allowing Admin to create Scheduled & Automatic “point-in-time” Snapshots of a NAS volume, with Versioning. The snapshot can be transfer and stored else where for backup/restore purposes. System Configuration Backup & Restore. NAS system configuration includes: volume configuration and user info. It can be saved to Admin’s computer and store it elsewhere. In case of hardware failure, a new NAS unit has replaced the old one, by using the “Restoring” option on the admin web GUI, the system configuration can be easily restored from this backup. Local Tape Backup. Allow installation of optional PCI SCSI HBA for external SCSI Tape drive/auto-loader/library to support local tape backup. NDMP Support. Allow direct backup from NAS-to-Tape controlled by customers’ existing Backup Server via NDMP SA-4 module/function. rd 3 Party Backup Agent Support. Allow installation, by end customers , of CA BrightStor ARCserve Linux agent, and NetVault Linux agent to support customers ’existing backup infrastructure. User Data Backup. Multiple methods or combination of methods can be used to safeguard users’ data in NAS. Use Snapshot feature Use external/network Backup Server and install backup agent on the NAS, then backup to this network Backup Server Use ClusStor Replicator to replicate user data to an other ClusStor NAS unit or multiple NAS units. Use Local SCSI Tape Backup
ANTI-VIRUS • •
Due to its Linux nature, it is better resistent to most of the Viruses which are made to attack Windows platforms Supports CA eTrust Anti-Virus software on the NAS unit by end customers
FULLY INTEROPERABLE • • •
Fully interoperable with all other models of ClusStor NAS product line. Can be deployed across multiple remote offices & locations. It is a part of a total enterprise solution from ClusStor.
iSCSI iSCSI Target Allow IT staff to partition certain portion(s) of the total storage as iSCSI Target, and assign it to specific Host computer to work as if a local physical disk / block device. Allow Multiple iSCSI volumes to be created in a single ClusStor 918-SA Allow Multiple iSCSI volumes to be assigned to a single or different Host computers Supported Initiator Linux Initiator & Microsoft Initiator What is iSCSI ? iSCSI is also known as IP-SAN, it is used as a low-cost alternative to expensive Fibre-SAN iSCSI target provides affordable storage provisioning, protection and availability over Ethernet networks. It eliminates backup windows, minimizes downtime and enables rapid recovery. Typical iSCSI Applications Share free disk resources among servers Extend high-performance fault-tolerant disk devices across the network Storage consolidation Centralized backup Storage Space for Snapshot to achieve Instant Recovery for Exchange Server or SQL Server Cost-effective clustering
SPECIAL FEATURES NAS Aggregation & Scalability Allows Multiple NAS units aggregation for Windows clients Multiple NAS units can be aggregated under one IP address for Windows clients Each NAS unit appears as a folder/directory within the home volume of the “Master NAS” WEB Hard Drive Users have the freedom to securely upload/download files to/from home volume from any remote location via HTTPS. Users have the freedom to share his/her own NAS folder/files with other teammembers without Administrator’s involvement. Built-In “Send-Mail” function allows user sending a large size file via email by sending a URL of the file on the WEB Hard Drive instead of attaching the actual file. The recipient then can download the file from Web Hard Drive via web browser over regular Internet access. Doing so can bypass the limitation on attachment size set by most of IT staff for email servers.

ClusStor NAS OS Advantage
ClusStor NAS OS is based on Linux XFS journaling file system. It works perfectly for Pure Unix/Linux networking environment for fast NFS performance, and Unix/Linux NIS support, and Special Unix/Linux needs such as long file name, etc. In these situations, Windows Storage Server would not satisfy users’ needs. It fits perfectly in a Windows and Unix/Linux and Mac mixed networking environments too. While it is native to support Unix/Linux clients, it can seamlessly integrated into Windows network and supporting Apple/Mac. One NAS unit as centralized storage device is capable of supporting multiple OS platforms, eliminating the need to have multiple storage devices for different OS clients, otherwise. It also seamlessly and transparently integrates into a pure Windows networking environment by supporting Windows ADS/PDC/Domain/Workgroup, and by using simply IE web browser to setup and configure.
How does PCBackup Utility Work? The embedded PCBackup utility is a very powerful backup tool to protect Windows based PC/Laptop computers’ data/files. When a user login to the NAS, the NAS will automatically create and assign a “Backup” folder to that user. When the user click on this backup folder via the Web GUI, he/she will be prompted to allow installation of the backup agent on the local computer. The PCBackup utility GUI will allow user to define when to backup, how often to backup and if use compression or not, and most importantly, how many versions does the user want to keep before over-write the first backup version. Compression will allow saving disk space on the NAS. The first backup is always a full backup of the original files. All following backups will transfer only the changed blocks in each file, if there are no changes in a file, then there will be no blocks in that file need to be transfer. The delta info (changed blocks) then gets transfer to the NAS from PC, and based on the original file, the backup engine in NAS will reconstruct the complete file based on the original file and the delta blocks. So each backup file on the NAS is a complete file on its own. Because only the delta blocks not the entire file are transferred, the network traffic is very light, and backup performance is very fast. This technology/process is called Block-Level/File-Based backup.
How does NAS-to-NAS Replicator Work? The embedded Replicator can replicate folders locally to itself, or to another ClusStor NAS in the same LAN, or to an other ClusStor NAS over internet/VPN/WAN. The Replication can be initiated by the Source unit or by the Target unit. The Replication also utilizes the “Block-Level/File-Based” delta block transferring technology/techniques.
Why Hardware RAID-5 ?
Software RAID-5 is simply not a business class configuration. Software RAID-0, 1, and 0+1 will work fine, but in case of software RAID-5, we have seen and heard a lots of failures, especially during a software RAID-5 Rebuilding if there are heavy data access by clients at the same time. We have also seen IT staff and Administrators who do not setup the remote email notification and/or do not routinely check on the system status. In case a disk fails, customers would keep on using it without taking any action to replace the bad disk and rebuild the RAID, until the 2nd disk fails, then the entire NAS suddenly became unusable and all data in it is gone. By employing the hardware RAID controller, ClusStor provides “Audible Alarm” to make sure proper attention must be paid by the IT staff or Administrators, even if they are ignorance enough not to setup the remote email notification and not to do routinely check system status.
