Coaching Stock Apprenticeship – Syllabus for Log Books Contents: PART A – REPAIR SHOP - MECHANICAL FITTING Bogie Overhaul and Repair Buffers and Draw Gear Vehicle Underframe/Chassis Brake Equipment PART B – REPAIR SHOP – ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT Vehicle Electrical Systems and Equipment PART C – REPAIR SHOP – BODYWORK AND COACHWORK Coach Body Shell and Coach Work PART D – RUNNING REPAIRS Fault Management and FTR PART A – REPAIR SHOP - MECHANICAL FITTING 1) Bogie Overhaul and Repair Carry out inspection/repairs/overhaul/installation on the following components/equipment: • • • • • • Bogie frame inspection and repair Axlebox inspection and overhaul (Including lubrication systems) Bogie mounted brake gear Wheelset and tyre inspection and overhaul Repair and overhaul of plain and roller axle bearings Primary and secondary suspension 2) Buffers and Draw Gear Carry out inspection/repairs/overhaul/installation on the following components/equipment: • • Buffers Draw hook, drag box and head stock mountings and fastenings, draw hook rubbers 3) Vehicle Underframe/Chassis Carry out inspection/repairs/overhaul on the following components/equipment: • • • • • Vehicle underframe Underframe mounted equipment fastenings Mounting of underframe pipework Non-destructive crack detection techniques and procedures covering underframe and bogie frames General lubrication systems 4) Brake Equipment Carry out inspection/repairs/overhaul on the following components/equipment: • • • • • • • Vacuum cylinders Brake valves and gauges DA valves Hoses, pipework and cocks Brake rigging assembly, including an understanding of rigging geometry Vehicle brake system testing The above on air brake equipment if applicable PART B – REPAIR SHOP – ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT Carry out inspection/repairs/overhaul on the following components/equipment: • • • • • • • • Batteries – Testing, charging, inspection and installation Voltage regulator inspection, repair and testing Dynamo inspection, repair and testing Wiring repair and installation including protective devices Switches Installation of conduit Connectors and crimps etc. Knowledge of electrical calculations for wiring CSA for DC systems PART C – REPAIR SHOP – BODYWORK AND COACHWORK (Possibly not included as part of the mech/elect apprenticeship) Design, assembly, inspection and repair procedures • • • • • • • • • External coach doors (including hanging) Steel body shell Timber body shell Vehicle body framework Glazing Trimming Plumbing and water systems Carriage warming equipment Gas systems (kitchen equipment) PART D – RUNNING REPAIRS • • • • Interpretation of train crew fault reports Diagnosis of reported faults Undertake examination for FTR Making out a report Nigel Graham HRA Training & Education Committee 2017-08-01
