COLLEGE COMPUTING     FOR RESIDENTS  2014   THE COLLEGE NETWORK AND  GETTING CONNECTED.          COLLEGES’ INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY GROUP  College Computing for New Residents Welcome to RESNET! RESNET is the name for the "Residential Network" within your College. As a member of RESNET you have access to  The RESNET Network  College Laser Printers  Computer Lab Facilities  Your UQConnect Internet Account RESNET offers a Local Area Network connection to every resident at speeds of up to 1Gb per second. This is up to 10 times faster than the fastest broadband services on offer. RESNET is operated by the Colleges' Information Technology Group (or CITG) on behalf of the group members. Members are made up of nine of the residential colleges at the University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus. CITG was formed to provide a non-profit information technology management and advice center, solely focused on delivering advanced services to the member Colleges, their Residents and Staff. For more information, please see http://www.citg.uq.edu.au or, for assistance, please contact the CITG Helpdesk:  Email [email protected]  Phone (07) 3878 0777 Network Overview The Residential Network is known as RESNET and includes all residents of the CITG member colleges. As well as being the gateway to University, RESNET provides you with internal services and support that outside colleges do not receive. At home, you may have used a dial-up or ADSL connection (over analogue phone lines) to your Internet Service Provider. A modem converts the computer’s digital signal into an analogue signal suitable for transmission. Modems do not work at the colleges because there is a digital phone system. Instead, each room is linked by a series of cables that provides a high-speed connection to the Internet. Plugging your modem into the college telephone system will cause damage to your modem. To allow your computer to connect to Resnet it needs to have a network (Ethernet) card installed. Please Note: Macbook Air users will need a USB – Ethernet adapter in order to plug into the network. Revision 1, October 2013 2 College Computing for New Residents Getting Started What do I need? 1. UQ Account: UQ students will receive a UQConnect Username and Password by mail before arriving at college. If you are not a UQ student, you will be able to organise an account on arrival. 2. RESNET ID: RESNET ID’s are given to you when you arrive at College. Providing the college with your UQConnect Username before you arrive will allow us to have an account ready for you. If you don’t receive a RESNET ID, you should apply for one from your college office when you arrive.  Under 18’s All students under 18 years of age are required by law to have a parent or guardian authorise internet access. Both of the forms below must be completed before you will be able to connect.  CITG Form: provided with your college documentation – return to college  UQ Form: http://uqconnect.net/student/student-free/under18 - return to UQ 3. Recommendation For new students starting your degree, strong consideration should be given to purchasing a new computer which will last for the duration of your studies. Whilst we are unable to recommend any specific supplier or brand, we do recommend purchasing from a reputable supplier, and ensuring that any warranty is accessible in Brisbane. UQ students can access discounted prices on hardware under the University’s preferred supplier agreements. Please visit the ITServices website http://www.its.uq.edu.au/ for further information (you will need your UQ Account to log in). Revision 1, October 2013 3 College Computing for New Residents RESNET ID vs UQConnect Account You will need both a UQConnect Account and a ResnetID account to make full use of the network facilities available to you. What do they do? Your RESNET ID allows you to access:  College Computer Labs with Laser Printing Facilities  The Local Area Network > Free-to-Air TV channels (watch TV from your computer quota free) > Student run services (DC++) and Games Servers Your UQConnect Account allows you to access:  University Lab and Library Computers  Personal Email Account, Blackboard and MySiNet  Internet Access (download limits apply– extra credit available for purchase) You will not be able to access UQ resources from College without a RESNET ID. How do I get an account? UQ Account UQ students: You will receive these details from UQ with your offer. If you do not, please call UQConnect on 3365 6000. You will only have access to internal UQ sites until you have completed your enrolment and under 18 Forms (if applicable). All Other Students: To use the internet in your room, you will need to organise a College Commercial Internet Account from UQConnect ($4/mth) when you arrive (see map next page). This account will give you 1GB quota per month and access to wireless hotspots. You can also use your normal University quota via Eduroam.
