Examples: CE760-1G, CE370-512, etc. ** The heat spreader functions as an interface between the COM Express module and an implementation-specific thermal solution. Heat spreaders have been found to decrease thermal performance compared to one-piece heatsinks, such as the CE-PHS, CE-PHS17, and CE-AHS. 7 Step 2: Prepare accessory components ATX power supply Use only an ATX12V-compliant power supply with the CR100 Flex ATX carrier board. An ATX P4 power supply with a 24-pin cable is recommended. A 20-pin cable can also be used. Tip Power supplies with 24-pin cables are labeled “BTX.” The power supply should be rated above 200 Watts with at least 12A output on the +12V rail. When multiple fans are used, additional amperage on the +12V rail will be required. For example, if a 4U chassis with two fans has 2A surge current for each fan, 16A is required (12A + 2A + 2A). A typical power supply for the CR100 Flex ATX carrier board may have these specifications: Type: Max Power: AC input: Frequency: Input current: DC output: ATX 12V 350W 100-120V AC, 200-240V AC 50/60Hz 10A @ 115V, 6A @ 230V Voltage +3.3V +5V +12V -5V -12V +5VSB Current 14A 30A 15A 0.5A 0.8A 3.0A CD-ROM Use a standard IDE cable to attach a CD-ROM or DVD drive to the CR100 carrier board’s IDE header. A CD-ROM drive is usually required to install the operating system and other software. Hard disk Standard computer IDE and SATA hard disks (60GB, 80GB, 120GB, etc.) can be attached to the CR100 carrier board. The CR100 board contains one IDE header and two SATA connectors. Other internal cables Additional interfaces may be added to your chassis, such as an RS-232 port, USB ports, front panel LEDs, etc. Refer to Figure 14 on page 23 for a diagram of header locations on the CR100 board. 8 COM Express QUICK S Pre-installation Instructions T A R T G U I D E Network interface The CR100 carrier board includes a 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet interface. Alternatively, a PCI Network Interface Card (NIC) can be installed in the PCI slot or a PCI Express NIC in the PCI Express x1 slot. Keyboard and mouse The CR100 carrier board supports a standard USB keyboard and USB mouse. DVI and VGA Monitors If you have a CR100-2DVI carrier board You can attach one or two digital video monitors to the DVI interfaces on the CR100 carrier board. Alternatively, one of the DVI ports can output VGA signals to support the attachment of a VGA monitor. In this case, a DVI-to-VGA adapter (CE-DVI-VGA) is required. If you have a CR100-PCIE16 carrier board The CR100-PCIE16 carrier board supports the use of a PCI Express graphics card in the PCI Express x16 slot for high-performance graphics acceleration. Alternatively, you can connect a VGA monitor to one of the DVI ports using a DVI-to-VGA adapter (CE-DVIVGA). LVDS Display A low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) interface on the CR100 carrier board allows the connection of low-voltage displays. Attachment of these devices typically require a custom cable. Use the LVDS interface pin-out chart in the Procelerant COM Express Reference Manual as a guide for obtaining an appropriate cable. Additional information Ethernet MAC addresses and IEEE 1394B GUID The CR100 carrier board has a factory-assigned Ethernet MAC address and IEEE 1394B globally unique identifier (GUID). Thermal solution assembly options There are two ways to attach a heatsink (or other thermal solution) to the COM Express module, and secure that assembly to the CR100 carrier board. Method 1 (see Figure 1) is explained in detail in this manual, and uses screws inserted from the top of the heatsink to attach the COM Express module to the CR100 carrier board. Method 2 (see Figure 2) uses longer screws from the bottom of the CR100 carrier board through the COM Express module, and is secured by nuts on the top of the heatsink. This method allows more leeway in the thickness of the thermal solution. 9 1 Figure 1. Depending on the jumper setting, the DVI-I port at J1 or J2 will provide that signal. Table 4. VGA output selection header Setting Description Pins 1 and 2 jumpered (default setting) Obtain VGA output from DVI-I port J2 Pins 1 and 2 open Obtain VGA output from DVI-I port J1 On a CR100-2DVI carrier board, both DVI-I ports output DVI signals. The jumper setting specifies which of the two ports will also output VGA signals. On a CR100-PCIE16 carrier board, only one DVI-I port can be used (as specified by the jumper), and that port will output only VGA signals. Note Due to differences in connector types, a DVI-to-VGA adapter (CE-DVI-VGA) is required when connecting a VGA monitor cable to a DVI-I port. 16 COM Express QUICK S Installation Instructions T A R T G U I D E Step 3: Attach standoffs to the CR100 carrier board Assembly method 1 (see Thermal solution assembly options on page 9) is described in this section.1 Use the five 4mm CR100 standoff screws (item 11 on page 13) to secure the CR100 standoffs (item 4). The easiest way to do this is to stand the CR100 board up on one side, and push the screws through the back of the board. You can then attach the standoffs to the screws on the other side of the board. WARNING To avoid damaging the CR100 carrier board, be careful not to over-tighten the screws. Figure 5. CR100 standoff screws on bottom of board 6WDQGRII VFUHZV 1 Assembly method 2 may be more appropriate for taller thermal solutions. Refer to Figure 2 on page 11 for a diagram of how to assemble the components using assembly method 2, which uses the five 25mm screws (item 5) and hex nuts (item 7) instead of the 4mm standoff screws. The longer screws should extend through the CR100, standoffs, COM Express module, and thermal solution. 17 2 Figure 6. CR100 standoffs attached to top of board 6WDQGRIIV Step 4: Attach the memory module to the COM Express module Attach the Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module (SO DIMM) to the COM Express embedded computing module.2 When seated correctly, the latches click into place. Figure 7. COM Express QUICK S Installation Instructions T A R T G U I D E Step 5: Attach the heatsink to the COM Express module (optional) The procedure in this section apply to all RadiSys active and passive heatsinks designed specifically for the COM Express module. Apply thermal interface material (TIM) to the heatsink Use the Thermstrate phase change TIM applicator bar (CE-TIM) to apply a thin layer of thermal interface material to the raised section under the heatsink, as shown in Figure 8. When assembled, the raised section will rest against the three main chips on the COM Express module (CPU, GMCH, and ICH). A light application of Thermstrate is sufficient, as the material will liquefy and fill in minor gaps and surface irregularities when the chips heat up. Thermstrate ensures full contact between the chips and heatsink in order to optimize heat dissipation. Figure 8. Applying thermal interface material Attach the heatsink to the COM Express module Place two spacers (item 9 on page 13) over the two screw holes used for attaching the COM Express module. Figure 9. Place spacers over the two screw holes &20([SUHVV$WWDFKPHQW+ROHV Turn the COM Express module over so that the SODIMM module is underneath and facing the heatsink. Insert the two 12mm screws (item 10 on page 13) into the middle 19 2 and edge screw holes, and place the COM Express module on top of the heatsink, as shown in Figure 10. The screws should go through the two spacers you placed on top of the heatsink. Tighten the screws to 3 inch/lbs of torque. Figure 10.
