Polycom’s Leadership in International Standardization Activities Among its many activities, Polycom is currently active in the following groups and committees:
ITU-T Study Group 16 – Working Party 2 ITU-T SG16 WP2 defines standards in the area of multimedia platforms and interworking. Polycom was deeply involved in the design of the H.320, H.323, H.324, and T.120 systems, as well as numerous related standards. Currently, Polycom experts are active in the following roles: • Contributor to work in H.323 and H.248. • Editor of H.323 V5 • Editor of H.323 annex Q on Far End Camera Control • Editor of H.248/MEGACO annex on Packages for Decomposed MCU. • Contributor to the work on H.235, security for H.323 systems. • Editor of ITU-T Rec. H.324 • Editor of H.239, Role Management and Additional Media Channels for H.300 Series Terminals • Editor of H.241, Extended Video Procedures and Control Signals for H.300 Series Terminals
ITU-T Study Group 16 – Working Party 3 ITU-T SG16 WP3 defines standards for coding and compression of video and audio signals. Polycom has made major contributions to ITU-T Recs. H.261, H.263, and the new H.264, and was the primary inventor of ITU-T G.722.1. In recent months, Polycom staff members have been active as follows: • Rapporteur for ITU-T Study Group 16 Question E, “Media Coding”. This question addresses all aspects of media coding, including audio, video, graphics, still-imageand character coding for, both conversational and non-conversational applications. This includes conventional and IP telephony, audiovisual multimedia communications, and other applications that not addressed by other media coding questions in ITU-T. This Question also addresses the need to define extensions to existing ITU-T media coding Recommendations for use in conversational and nonconversational services and systems. • Major contributor to ITU-T SG16 Q.6 (Video Coding Experts Group, VCEG) on the H.264 next-generation video coding project. (H.264 was formerly known as H.26L.) Over the last year, VCEG has been working jointly with the ISO MPEG committee in

the Joint Video Team (JVT). JVT is responsible for defining the emerging H.264/AVC (also known as MPEG-4 part 10) video standard. Polycom developed the error concealment feature (Flexible Macroblock Ordering) that is a key component of the Baseline and X profiles in the proposed H.264 standard. Chair of ITU-T Study Group 16 Working Party 3 (co-sponsor) Chair, JVT Ad-Hoc Group for H.264 complexity reduction. Chair, JVT Ad-Hoc Group on Profiles, Levels, and Applications (for H.264/AVC). Chair, VCEG Ad-Hoc Group on Requirements. Editor, ITU-T G.722.1, wideband audio coding at 24 and 32 kbits/sec. G.722.1 is the only high-efficiency wideband audio compression algorithm optimized for music and natural sounds as well as speech. Polycom was the primary contributor of this standard. Polycom is leading a group of 32 companies worldwide in a program to make available the Baseline profile of the H.264/AVC standard available on a royalty-free basis.
IETF Polycom is involved in the work on SIP and other working groups important for multimedia teleconferencing and voice over IP. Polycom staff are currently leading and contributing in the following roles: • Member of the SIPPING design team defineing the conferencing architecture and protocols in SIP. • Co-editor of drafts on conferencing requirements and video control. • Editor of draft on media policy control protocol.
IMTC IMTC is a group of over 80 firms working to promote standardization and widespread use of multimedia teleconferencing. Polycom has been active in IMTC since co-founding the organization in 1994, and senior Polycom staff are participating in the following roles: • Member, IMTC Board of Directors • Treasurer of the IMTC • Official Liaison Representative to MPEG on video coding issues • Co-chair of the Media Coding Activity Group • Chair, Requirements Working Group. A major focus of IMTC is to work with ITU, ISO, IETF, MPEG, and other standardization organizations for policies and standards that reflect the needs of the teleconferencing industry.
