Road Weather Information System • • • •
Atmospheric observations Surface and subsurface (17”) data Temperature Data Probe (TDP) to 72” Images (24k) - low light, PTZ – Supports multiple users (FAA,NWS,military)
• Additional sensors supplied by – National Weather Service (rain gauges) – University of Alaska @ Fairbanks Geophysical Institute (rain gauges, pressure, solar radiation) 2004 NATMEC

RWIS Deployment • Phase I - 2001 – 8 sites in Anchorage area – Prototype lessons learned - to test deployment concepts, communication networks, and equipment reliability
• Phase II: 2003 - 2005 – Statewide on the major roads – New communication solutions – Design changes, new/additional sensors & cameras 2004 NATMEC
RWIS Communication Issues • Infrastructure – Coverage - cell and POTS – Slow transmission - local State networks – High cost - long distance and cell
• Geographic & Environmental – Line of sight communication – Wind and rime icing – High construction costs
2004 NATMEC
DOT Spread Spectrum Experience • “Radio Telemetry for Three RWIS Cellular Sites” Engineering and Environmental Internet Solutions, LCC, Dec 20, 2001
• Request For Proposals (RFP 253002) Phase II Road Weather Information Systems State of Alaska, Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Jul 3, 2002
• “RWIS Communications Analysis”, Surface Systems Inc (SSI) and Engineering and Environmental Internet Solutions (EEInternet), Dec 2002 2004 NATMEC
Communications Analysis RFP required a detailed look at communication opportunities at each potential RWIS location to:
• • • • • •
Maximize State Wide Area Network Provide polling from multiple locations Focus on POTS local calling areas Explore Internet technologies Look at GEO-broadband satellites Test spread spectrum technologies in an RWIS configuration 2004 NATMEC
Spread SpectrumProven Technology In Alaska • Juneau Wind Profiler - UCAR http://juneau-winds1.rap.ucar.edu/JuneauOps/combo_table.html
• Alaska Railroad Avalanche Program http://www.akrr.com/community/hourly_rpt.htm
• University of Alaska @ Fairbanks Water and Environmental Research Center http://www.uaf.edu/water/projects/atlas/metdata/atlasmetsitemap.htm http://www.uaf.edu/water/projects/cpcrw/metdata/cpcrwmetsitemap.htm

Spread Spectrum Communication • Technology - radio changes between available frequencies on user selected pattern or uses only selected slots of available frequencies for security and to minimize interference • Operates in the FCC industrial, scientific, and medical bands – 902 - 928 Mhz, no licensing required
• Minimum range (line of sight) - 20 miles
2004 NATMEC
Spread Spectrum Communication • Multiple operation modes – Point-to-point – Point-to-multipoint – Store-and-forward repeater
• Multiple operation modes – Data Speeds RS 232 1,200 baud to 115.2 K baud
• Power requirements 9.5 to 32 Volts DC

Spread Spectrum Antennas • 3 dB Omni-directional – Lower performance – Environmentally less sensitive – Multi-site capability (point to multi-point)
• 10 dB Yagi directional – Better performance – Environmentally sensitive to rime icing – Is capable for multiple RWIS capability (master to slave)
