KPS Open-3 Communications Program – Installation Guide
1.0 – Before Installation 1.01 – System Requirements Microsoft 32-bit Windows computer with the following minimum specifications: Processor: Pentium 200 and up Memory: 64 Megabytes Ram Display: Super VGA Monitor and Video card (1024 by 768 by 16-bit color) Modem: v92 56k Hardware Modem – Zoom® Modems are used by HVAC Concepts. (Software Modems also known as “WinModems” tend to be problematic and are not recommended.)
1.02 – Verify Correct PC Operation Many computers in the field are poorly configured, maintained, and often times have had other programs and operating system files installed or removed improperly. It is very important that any existing problems on a customer PC be detected and reported to the customer BEFORE the KPS Open-3 Communications Program and its associated files are installed. (1) Shutdown the PC and make sure that it shuts down completely and without errors. (2) Restart the PC and make sure that it starts up and loads windows without errors. (3) Control Panel, Modems, Diagnostics: make sure that the desired modem is configured and responds to the diagnostic (more info) command. Record which Communications Port number the modem is configured for (COM1, COM2, COM3, etc…). (4) Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Ports: make sure that the desired Communications Port (COM Port) is listed. (5) Control Panel, Display, Settings: make sure that the screen resolution is at least 1024 by 768 by 16-bit color.
1.03 – Windows 98 / Windows NT / Windows 2000 / Windows XP Windows 95 is no longer supported or updated by Microsoft. Because of this HVAC Concepts Inc. does not support installation of CP on a system with Windows 95. There are many different versions of 32 bit windows – Windows 95, Windows 95b, Windows98, Windows 98 Revision 2, Windows NT 4 (multiple service pack “SP” revisions), Windows 2000, and Windows XP (Home and Professional editions). Windows 98 Revision 2, Windows 2000, and Windows XP are the recommended operating systems for the KPS Open-3 Communications Program. The KPS Open-3 Communications Program will install and run on older versions of the Windows operating system. Thousands of problems and improvements have been made in the Windows operating system from the original Windows 95 release to the current versions of the Windows operating systems. Windows NT and Windows 2000 – The installation program must be run by a user with administrator privileges.

2.0 – Install Software and Data Files It is strongly recommended that… (1) The default directories are accepted and used for program and data file installation, and (2) All other applications are closed (including virus protection software) before running the KPS Open-3 Setup. Insert KPS Open-3 CD into your CD-ROM drive. The KPS Open-3 setup selection program will load and the following dialog box will be displayed. If after several seconds the KPS Open-3 Setup Selection screen (pictured below) doesn’t appear the autorun feature (automatically executing a default program from a CD when inserted) must be disabled on your computer. To manually start the KPS Open-3 Setup Selection screen select Start, Run, browse to the CD-ROM drive, select “open3.exe”, and then select run.
There are several applications and data files for the applications on the CD. Step 1: Install Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. Installs the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and updates key system components. Step 2: Install CP and Histview (KPS Open-3 Communications Program and History Viewer Program). MMI (Man-Machine-Interface) software to interrogate LonWorks based control systems and data contained on our web server (www.hvacc.net). Prior versions of CP will be removed during installation of the current version of CP. Step 3: Install CP Data Files. Site specific files (graphics, display groups, documentation) used by CP and Histview. Step 4: Install Acrobat Reader. Program used to view site drawings and other documentation. If the KPS Open-3 setup selection program disappears between steps or computer restarts then either: (1) eject and reinsert the CD-ROM into the drive, or (2) select Start, Run, browse to the CD-ROM drive, select “open3.exe”, and then select run.

3.0 – Configuring Connection Before you can connect a site the connection must be configured. From the KPS Open-3 CP Select Site screen select Site, Edit Configuration. Note: The Modem Dial, Modem Answer, PCLTA Open, and SLTA Open fields are case sensitive and must be entered in same case as shown.
3.01 – Modem Dial (Remote Dial Up Serial LonTalk Adapter) If you are going to be calling your system via modem, this is the only relevant setting. Replace the COM2 entry with the communications port which your modem is on such as COM3, COM1 or COM4. Try to connect. If the system does not dial and stays stuck on the configuring modem screen then the initialization command on the “Open-3 Modem Init”, “System-2 Modem Init” or “Jace Modem Init” is wrong and the modem is not accepting it. Try one of the following to see if they work (without the quotes), “AT&F”, AT&F0”, “AT&F+MS=V34,0” and AT&F0+MS=V34,0” If you are still experiencing communications problems, try to disable error correction and flow control on your modem with the appropriate modem commands (read your modem manual to find out the commands – they differ from modem to modem). Command Format = SLTA COM[PORT] 38400 buffered nobufrequest modem=at[MODEM INIT COMMANDS]dt PORT = Communications Port (COM Port) to which your modem is connected (1, 2, 3, 4). MODEM INIT COMMANDS = Modem specific commands to put modem in the proper mode to connect to a remote SLTA. Example: Modem on COM1, Restore Modem Defaults before dialing = SLTA COM1 38400 buffered nobufrequest modem=at&f0dt Note: If you are using a “WinModem” and experiencing connection problems, regardless of the initialization string used (even if you are sending the AT commands to turn off flow and error control), uncheck the “Use Error Control” and the “Use Flow Control” boxes in your modem setup: Start, Control Panel, Modems, Properties, Connection, Advanced.
3.02 – SLTA-10 (Modem Connect) Configuration Switch Settings (Local Direct Cable Connection) Note: Use Echelon SLTA-10 Modem Cable (#73380). 9-Pin end of cable must be connected to the SLTA-10. If the modem has a 9-Pin connector use a gender changer from the 25 pin end of the SLTA-10 Modem Cable to make the connection. Switch 1 / CFG3 2 / CFG2 3 / CFG1

3.07 – CTI SLM / IM SiteLync (Integrated SLTA and Modem) Configuration Switch Settings The SLM / IM SiteLync is the a DIN rail mount package with an integrated SLTA and modem. The is a configuration switch block inside the front cover are docuemnted in the following table. The Run / Cfg Switch on the front panel should be set left to the run position. 3.10 – Site List Path Configuration Sets the path for the database which contains the site list. This should only have to be changed if you have installed the system to a different directory other than the default (c:\program files\kps open-3\sites\sitelist.mdb). Early versions of the Communications Program require the program to be exited and restarted after changing the Site List Path.
3.20 – Idle Disconnect Timer Configuration Sets the amount of time (in seconds) before the system will logoff the property if the system is left connected and the user is idle. For direct connections, this should be set to 0 seconds (never idle disconnect). For modem connections this should be set to 600 seconds.
3.30 – Connection Troubleshooting The system writes two log files “CpOpen.Log” and “CpClose.Log” each time a connection to a site is started and stopped respectively. These two files contain detailed debugging information which is useful in resolving connection problems. These files are normally located in the “c:\Program Files\Kps Open-3” folder.
3.40 – Support Issues Please contact us at (301) 670-0044 or
[email protected] for support issues. HVAC Concepts Inc will provide phone support for the installation and setup of the Communications Program. This will include help with checking the system configuration and setup of the modem if it is working properly. Any diagnostic or repairs needed to get a system working will be billed at a normal labor and equipment rates in effect at the time of the repair.
