At the same time, many applications increasingly rely on 24/7 access to business-critical data, drastically reducing the amount of time available to backup data and putting tremendous pressure on IT’s ability to meet their SLA commitments. Many customers are looking to native arraybased snapshot capabilities from vendors such as EMC® and NetApp® to meet the need for backup speed. Some of these options require expensive additional storage for snapshots, while others are much more storage efficient but require more time to rebuild data upon restore. Inherently, snapshots enable customers to make much more frequent backups of their data. That very ability creates its own set of challenges as snapshot management can quickly become complex. Exponential increases in the number of snapshots/backups make it difficult to manage and enforce consistent backup policies or quickly locate specific backup data copies from among various storage tiers. Furthermore, snapshots are typically tied to the production storage array. Any failure of the storage array itself leads to complete data loss. Creating a second copy of the data from snapshots usually requires purchasing another storage system at considerable expense and replicating data to it. However, as soon as you copy the snapshot over, you break any links of the second copy with the production system. As a result, recovery from the second copy requires several manual steps before the data is available to the production system for recovery. Smart use of snapshot capabilities should ensure that better backup speeds don’t also transfer the workload and complexity of managing myriad sets of snapshots to the central site and it shouldn’t complicate application data recovery. Fast and Simplified Data Backup, Management and Recovery The CommVault® SnapBackup solution leverages native array-based snapshots using the nextgeneration data management capabilities in its Simpana® software. Unlike traditional streaming backup methods that can take hours to complete, SnapBackup software quickly acquiesces the application or file system, triggers the arraybased snapshot and returns the system to a fully operational state within minutes. Critical applications are down for only a few minutes instead of hours with snapshots as fully recoverable as traditional backups. Snapshots are mounted on a proxy server and validated as part of a secondary process to ensure the snapshot is a valid application consistent recovery copy and readily available for recovery. Organizations can replace selective and infrequent backups with multiple recovery points throughout the day, reducing both RPO and RTO. This enables you to minimize the backup impact on production systems, while realizing faster fullfile and application recovery. Depending on your configuration, automatic rules for maintenance tasks (proxy validation, log management, snapshot aging) and a single embedded policy further simplify management. Selective snapshots can be copied using a secondary copy process and a proxy server to create a storage array independent backup copy.
