COMPOSITE SIGNAL SUMMER SUM005 Features General Description The SUM005 is a multifunction VME card. Its primary function is to linearly sum four analog inputs and output the summed signal for Summation input, typically, to a Phase Modulator. An externally supplied ♦ System Reference Frequency “station-reference” Processor frequency is also processed • Automatic & Manual and distributed by this Reference Selection module. • Automatic. Seamless ♦ Four signal Linear ♦ ♦ Fail-Over 1 PPM Internal Reference Single Slot 6U VME Card Signal Summer: Each of four analog inputs is applied to a variable gain amplifier. The gains of these amplifiers are controlled from the VME bus. The gain for each signal is varied as required for the desired Modulation Index at the Phase Modulator. After being amplified to the desired levels, the signals are summed and output to the up-stream modulator. Frequency Reference: The SUM005 also houses circuits that provide a stable reference signal to be used by other modules in a system. An External Frequency Reference at either 5 or 10 MHz is connected to a Phase Locked Loop with a 1 ppm VCXO. The output of the VCXO is buffered and provided to other cards in the system that need a frequency reference. The level of the External Frequency Reference input is monitored for levels greater than 0.6 Vp-p and less than 0.3 Vp-p. A sync monitor is used to determine when the VCXO is phase locked to the External Frequency Reference. The AUTO or MANUAL mode IN 1 Gain may be selected for the Frequency IN 2 Gain Reference. In the AUTO mode, Unity Gain SUM OUT Summer when the Reference-Frequency IN 3 Gain input level is >0.6 Vp-p, the system uses the VCXO phaseIN 4 Gain locked to the Ext Freq. Ref. If the input level falls below 0.3 Vp-p, VME v the VCXO is allowed to free run. Interface In the Manual mode, with External Frequency Reference REF OUT 1 selected, if the input level is falls Internal/ External REF IN REF OUT 2 below 0.3 Vp-p, the system shuts Reference PLL down.
