The "new" Corporate Marketing at Hewlett-Packard A r t Dauer
A r t Dauer, Director, Corporate Marketing
II
You all read, no doubt, in the March-April Measure that one of John Young's ten strategic issues is to develop a "Marketing Orientation" for HP. If you studied the organization in the centerpiece of that publication you may have noticed a collection of entities listed under the heading of "Corporate Marketing" at the bottom of the Marketing and International Sector. I would like to interrelate those "pieces" for you in this article. A company's success can be a function of how well its strategy matches its capabilities with the market place; how its organization changes to support the strategy; and how quickly and effectively it can make decisions to take advantage of opportunities in the market place. I believe that the recent organizational evolution of HP has taken us in a direction that will make these challenges easier to meet. "Marketing Orientation" infers that you spend considerable time and energy evaluating your competitors. You should know their strengths, weaknesses, and strategies. A portion of the new Corporate Marketing is designed to facilitate this process. However, winners and losers in
the marketplace will be determined, in the long-run by the customer. That is why we have chosen to show customer satisfaction at the center of this new Corporate Marketing. Corporate Marketing is a set of integrated activities, each of which has the same objectives - to enhance field productivity and customer satisfaction. The hexagonal symbol we have created shows the activities linked to each other and, appropriately, clustered around our customers and their satisfaction. This "marketing molecule" reinforces the interaction that must take place for HP to deliver our total product to our customer. Our recent reorganization has aligned divisions into groups which are intended to match our customers' needs. Internal structural barriers have been removed from our sales force, and it is now focused on integrated solution selling. The new Corporate Marketing delivers added value through four levels of marketing implementation: 1) Policies that make it easy for our customers to buy our products - and frame the best business relationship practices. 2) Systems that help us manage our resources, not simply pass audits. 3 ) Programs that maintain the technical excellence of our sales force, develop our marketing skills, provide the technologies to apply and maintain our products, give our cilstomers financial degrees of freedom, enable us to communicate with our customers, and measure our effectiveness with them. 4) Action that deliver supplies, accessories, and low-cost instruments in a timely and cost-effective manner. In summary, the key message is that this entire organization has two primary and fundamental objectives: 1) To enhance customer satisfaction. 2) To contribute to the productivity of our sales force.
This illustration shows the interaction that must take place for HP to deliver our total solution to our customer. COMPUTER NEWS For HP Use Only

SALES SUCCESSES Sales Successes reports on successful sales strategies and HP solution installations. Computer News welcomes contributions for this column from the field and divisions alike. Articles should be brief; informative, and contain the following information: (1) A description of the customer and the problem, (2) the competition's answer to the problem, (3) HP's solution and why the customer chose HP, and (4) who to call for more information about the sale. Also welcome would be some information about the amount of the sale and the solution's implementation date.
Personal Productivity Center beats the competition A1 Shrader/Valley Forge and Robert Gressens/ISG HP's Personal Productivity Center (PPC) was instrumental in establishing H P as the corporate office automation vendor a t this $5 billion pharmaceutical manufacturer based outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. T h e MIS department was responsible for company policy guidelines regarding office automation. Final equipment decisions, however, rested with end users consisting of managers, professionals, and secretaries. Existing equipment consisted of IBM PCs for managers and professionals, and IBM 5520s and Displaywriters for secretaries. In early 1984, the MIS Department began looking for one vendor to handle the diverse office automation and personal computer needs of the company. Initially they looked a t Wang, NCR, NBI, IBM, and Syntrex, but were unable to find one vendor that could handle their needs. Reluctantly, they narrowed their scope on multiuser word-processing needs. Having just won a major deal for other applications in this account, we called on the Corporate Director of MIS to talk about office applications. We were told that NCR systems had been budgeted, and their order

was imminent. Undaunted, the PPC strategy and products were presented, demonstrating that HP was the only vendor who could meet this company's shortand long-term word-processing, workgroup-computing, and personal computer needs. The MIS director was impressed with our PPC strategy and indicated that HP would get the order if NCR's base functionality could be met at or below NCR's price, HP could deliver in two months, and company secretaries felt that HP's word-processing was superior to NCR's. Within a week, the area consignment HP 3000 Series 37, HP 2628, HP Touchscreen personal computer, HP Portable, and HP 2688 were on site to demonstrate to corporate MIS staff, functional management, and administratve secretaries. The demo was very successful with the following results: Secretaries liked HP Word better than other wordprocessing packages, especially in the area of integrated words, graphics, and data, Managers liked our ability to support IBM PCs as workstations on the PPC, All were impressed by the Series 37's size, power, and ease of use in an office environment, The MIS department viewed HP as a better vendor for service and support, especially in potential Europe and Intercon locations, The MIS department appreciated the HP 3000 peer-to-peer networking as well as our communications capabilities to IBM mainframes, The MIS department liked the data integrity, security, and backup capabilities of the Series 37. The first two HP 3000 Series 37s have been implemented since January, 1985, at this company's corporate headquarters. As a result of this installation, HP has subsequently received commitments for a Series 42 and a Series 37, each with PPC software, for one of the company's divisions. HP is also being evaluated for multiple US and European locations this year. In short, the PPC strategy and our current office products are very competitive solutions for customers' overall OA needs. Ifyou would like additional information on this account, please contact A1 Shrader in the Valley Forge Sales Office, 215-666-9000. See articles beginning on page 29 for information about the new PPC release.

HP Transform/3000 wins over IBM account again Dave Stoner, Jim Pinsky/ISG A data processing facility of a city in Utah had a problem - how could it satisfy increasing user demands on its system without a massive conversion? It's IBM System134 had performed admirably for several years, but response times were deteriorating. User demands indicated an upgrade to a larger system. The city's particular needs were to convert source codes, screens, OCL, menus, and data in a limited amount of time with a very small staff; to increase programmer productivity; to integrate personal computers into its applications; to provide for automatic recovery from power failures; distribute systems; and to stay within the limits of the budget. The city began its search and discovered the HP 3000 as a possible alternative to IBM's Systemsl38. After experiencing a demonstration of the conversion, evaluating the hardware, looking a t library systems, and visiting an HP 3000 site in another Utah city, the data-processing manager decided on an HP 3000 Series 44. The manager also evaluated an IBM Systeml38, but the conversion effort was considered too massive. The HP 3000 Series 44 system has performed with greater power and capability than the IBM Systeml34. According to the data-processing manager, "Your conversion program performed in the manner represented, and I can recommend it without any reservation." Future growth plans for the city include installing separate systems for the library and police departments and connecting them in a network. The key points of the sales strategy that won this account were: Providing a demonstration of the HP 3000. Allowing the customer to see a successful local HP 3000 site running similar applications. Emphasizing the easy transition path from the IBM System134 to an HP 3000, compared to the complicated conversion required to go from an IBM System134 to a Systeml38. Transform/3000 means sales opportunities Dick Wong/ISG Since HP's Transform/3000 program was launched last summer, HP has been steadily winning with IBM customers who have run out of gas with IBM's System1 34s. And it's not just winning with smaller systems such as HP's Series 37. For the first quarter of fiscal year 1985, two-thirds of system sales won with Transform/3000 were for Series 48s or larger. T h e average systems sale price was $185,000. T h e largest order involved a $470,000 sale of a Series 68, which replaced two IBM Systeml34s. So take advantage of Transform/3000 to replace those IBM Systeml34s that have r u n out of capacity and face a horrendous conversion to IBM's Systeml38. Are your customers eligible for additional Response Center callers? A m y Ting/CSD Did you know that for every family support product a customer orders, the customer is entitled to a Response Center Caller an an alternate? This feature of our support program offers a substantial benefit, but many of our customers are not aware that they are entitled to this service. In order to allow a customer's application family caller to access the Response Center, each caller needs to be identified in our installed-base customer data base (IBS). Please have your people notify your Applications Engineering Operation (AEO) administrator to have these callers entered on IBS. You must work through your AEO Administrator because a special procedure is required to load additional callers into IBS. Remember - this only applies to families. When Category support is ordered, a customer does not receive an additional Response Center Caller. The Category support products extend the level of support selected on the operating systein to a group of subsystem software. Customers support this subsystem software through the same Response Center Caller that supports the operating system. If you have additional questions about the software support program, please contact your Customer Support Division support specialist: Albert Liu, Neelyl Asia Pacific, 408-725-81 11, ext. 3468, or TELNET 125-3468; Pat Conard, Midwest/CanadalEurope, 408725-811 1, ext. 3491, or TELNET 125-3491; Annie Lee, SouthernlEastern/Latin America, 408-725-81 11, ext. 3470. or TELNET 125-3470.

T h e legal documents associated with the program are the key to more training on workstation products for your dealers. Without these keys, they cannot become authorized to perform maintenance on more ulorkstation products. When DCS Agreements are completed, you must take care that they are completely filled out, including the signature block with the branch business manager's signature. These various agreements and the basic DCS Exhibit will be sent to Customer Support Division, Dealer Cooperative Support Program. T h e legal requirement is that you and your dealers complete and send two originals of each document. In August, 1984, the basic DCS Exhibit was revised to include the latest warranty policies. You will want to be sure your dealers use ths latest version, PIN 59538838D, when joining the program. (It supplements the sales agreement.) You may obtain copies of the DCS Exhibit and the various "K" attachments (each product has a different one) from your sales office or the Literature Distribution Center (see your DCS Field Training Guide, which was revised and distributed in March, 1985).

Warranty and contract limitations of service policy guidelines Alan DeFever/CSD and George Griffin/Neely, Santa Clara
I
To avoid misquoting HP's position on the use of nonHP productslmedia to our customers, the following summary serves as a refresher for our official policy. When a customer chooses to buy consumables or media from other vendors, even though we strongly recommend that HP products be used, we cannot void the warranty or cancel support agreements because of this decision. If damage to HP products occurs that HP reasonably determines or believes was caused by the use of nonHP supplied media, supplies, or consumable~,we can exclude that repair from warranty or contract coverage. Upon request, we will repair such damage on a time-and-material basis. Upon completion of repair. the product will again be supported by warranty or agreement. Caution: On some products, such as the HP 7933135 disc drives, HP may not support other media due to the integral part the media plays in the disc's operation. Support for the media is included as part of the MMC or as an option to the MMC. Support is not available for media from other vendors. Helpful Hint: When you are not sure if a certain type of media or consumable can be used in an HP product and still be supported, contact Customer Support Division or the supplying HP division before you advise the customer.

Special discount for HP 2 9 3 X printers Joe Barbera/VCD For US only Vancouver Division is offering a special 10 percent discounton all of our older demo consignment units. This discount is additional to any other discounts applicable. to a maximum of 2 5 percent.
This discount expires on June 1 , 1985. We hope that by offering this added incentive to your customers, we can convert all of our demo inventory to current specifications. This discount applies to: 1) All HP 2933As in demo inventory. 2) All HP 2932A and 2934A printers in demo inventory with a serial number of 2423Axxx or less. 3) Any H P 293X printer in demo inventory that does not have a normal serial number. (There were several printers put into demo inventory before official product release.) Over the last 12 months, the print mechanism and firmware in the HP 293X printers has evolved considerably. This was necessitated mostly by the introduction of the HP 29340s sheet feeder. This has two important consequences. First is that paper handling components have been modified extensively. So much so that it is important that any customer who has a n unusual application for forms handling should try it out on a new (date code greater than 2424) printer. We recommend trying all forms on a printer to check for proper registration and handling prior to recommending any printer. T h e second involves the use of the sheet feeder and H P Word IV, which is now available. Some of the new features include the ability to use the sheet feeder with the H P 2934A. T h e H P 2934A firmware was modified to complement this new version. T h e older HP 2934As are not capable of demonstrating the sheet feeder. With this new release, we expect to see a signficant increase of H P 2934A sales in word processing applications.

New extended mass storage ROM for Series 80 personal computers Bill Hodges/PCD T o continue the successful sales life of the HP-85B and HP-86B, Portable Computer Division announces the new HP Extended Mass Storage ROM, on the May 1, 1985, Corporate Price List. With the insertion of this new ROM into a slot in the Series 8 0 ROM Drawer Card, a greater amount of mass storage is made available to your Series 8 0 customers. T h e ROM supports double-sided, double-density disc drives from Greeley Division. This extra capacity allows Series 8 0 customers to store larger amounts of data than ever offered before on HP's lowest cost technical computers. T h e Extended Mass Storage ROM enables HP Series 8 0 personal computers to communicate with any HP disc drives that use the Subset-80 (SS-80) protocol. A disc protocol is the language used by the computer and the disc drive when they communicate with each other. Disc drives that use Arnigo protocol include the HP 82901M, 82902M, 9121D/S, 9133V, 9133XV, and 9134XV. T h e most recently introduced H P disc drives use the SS-80 protocol. These disc drives can only be used with Series 8 0 computers equipped with the optional Extended Mass Storage ROM. With the Extended Mass Storage ROM installed, both Amigo and SS-80 disc drives can be used simultaneously. T h e SS-80 disc drives that are supported on Series 8 0 personal computers are the HP 9122D/S, 9133DIHlL (up to 16.7 M bytes), 9134D/HlL, 9153A, and 9154A. There are two different procedures for obtaining the trade-in credit: 1) Customers who buy directly from HP will order the return credit on the same section of the HEART order as the Touchscreen 11. 2) End-users who buy from HP authorized dealers will return their equipment to FRD after they have received their new Tcluchscreen I1 computer. FRD will then mail a rebate check within four to six weeks (rebate forms and detailed return instructions will be distributed to all HP authorized dealers in early May). A major benefit of the trade-in program is its impact on the purchase price of a new Touchscreen I1 computer. Your customer may receive up to a 25 percent discount off the list price, depending upon the tradein path selected. Major accounts can now stretch their budget dollars and buy more Touchscreen I1 computers for the same amount of money. In addition, large accounts can maintain cc~mpatibilitywithin work groups or departments (e.g. single-sided versus double-sided disc formats). Customers should use the same boxes in which their new equipment arrived for returning the CPU and disc drive. Detailed instructions on packaging and returning the equipment will be included in either the Notice of Return (NOR) packet or rebate form. Return freight to HP will be paid by the customer. With EtherStartll50, your Touchscreen and Touchscreen I1 personal computer can operate on an Etherseries1150 local area network (LAN) without disc drives. Etherstart1150 consists of software and a plug-in ROM for the EtherLinkll50 accessory board. Etherstart1150 enables a networked Touchscreen personal computer to automatically load its operating system from the Winchester disc of an Etherseries network server. Now an Etherseries1150 LAN can operate economically with only two disc drives: one for disc sharing and one at a user workstation to load software. The elimination of a dual microfloppy disc drive represents a savings of $565 per node in network connection costs. Etherstart1150 is completely user installable and works on any HP Touchscreen or Touchscreen I1 personal computer with operating system C.O1.OO, firmware ~ e v i s i o nE or later, and a n ~ t h e r ~ i n k l l 5 0 accessory board.

Start out with a Winchester The ideal entry-level Winchester is the new HP 10M byte 3%-in Winchester with a %-inch 710 K byte double-sided microfloppy. Daily office tasks using word 1-2-3TM, and processing, spreadsheets with LotusTM creating high-quality graphic slides are a perfect match for the 10M byte disc. This rugged Winchester is priced attractively at $1,940. Your customer can now start out with a Winchester-based system and increase performance and capacity over a floppybased system. Is your personal computer expanding with you? Data-base and small local-area-networking applications need high capacity as well as Winchester performance. The 20M byte Winchester with 3%-inch 710K byte microfloppy is made to share common data bases and information. Workstations based on a UNIXTM operating system will find the 20M byte ideal for Basic Statistics or Numerical Analysis on HP 9000 Series 200 BASIC and Pascal computers. At $2,740, it's the perfect combination of price, performance and capacity for most business applications. Business power Large multiuser area networking applications match the new 40M byte drive with a 3%-inch 710K byte microfloppy. It has half the access time of our smaller Winchesters, significantly increasing the performance of networking and applications based on UNIX operating systems. The 40M byte will be available this summer priced at $4,240. Expand existing systems All of these new products are also available as standalone Winchesters for the expansion of existing floppy-based systems. The convenience, performance, and capacity of these Winchesters increase the productivity and efficiency of any personal computer workstation. Safeguard your investment All businesses, large or small, make a real investment in data. Whether it's payroll, research, financial, or personnel records, it's critical to the operation of that business. Safeguarding this investment is easy with the new %-inch Tape Backup with a 13152M byte (Touchscreen I1 only; up to 60M bytes on Series 200) capacity. possible loss of data by duplicating 5 0 percent of all data to allow reliable recovery of information. If your hard disc fails, this Tape Backup can be used a s a disc in emergency situations. Because it emulates a disc, you can use normal DOS commands to access files until your hard disc is repaired. And data can be restored on discs other than the one you copied from providing data interchangeability a s well as transportability. And it's softkey driven menu makes backup a snap. Combine its low $1,690 price tag, high reliability, and touchlsoftkey driven interface, and it's a wise choice to safeguard your investment. Which backup solution makes sense? T h e new tape backup, 9142A, is designed as a lowcost solution for the personal computer marketplace. T h e existing tape backup, the 9144A, was designed to be compatible with HP's high performance systems and, therefore, can exchange tape cartridges with the H P 7908,7911,7912, and 7914. T h e 9144A is also twice as fast as the 9142A for high performance usage. Each product has its own distinctly different targeted market and is not compatible with the other. PFS:File and Report and Context MBA disc-replacement program explained Kathryn MacMurray and Chris Walker/PSD Program description Double-sided Disc Replacement Program for PFS:File and Report and Context MBA. Who is affected Users of double-sided disc drives (HP 9122s) and either Context MBA (PIN 45481A) or PFS:File and Report (PIN 45488A) for the Touchscreen personal computer. Those customers who already own these products on double-sided discs (which are grey, as opposed to blue, discs) do not need to upgrade their program discs. Problem description Owners of double-sided disc drives have been advised not to use single-sided discs within double-sided drives, because single-sided media causes excessive wear to the drive head after repeated use. In addition, single-sided media become damaged in the process, and eventually, will become inoperable. PFS:File and Report and Context MBA are currently distributed on single-sided discs. Because both products are copy protected, these program discs cannot be backed up on double-sided discs a s recommended by HP. Users must therefore replace the original single-sided program discs with new, double-sided discs if they plan to use a double-sided disc drive. Otherwise, they risk damaging both the disc drive and the program disc. May 1. 1985

What to do H P will provide, at no cost to t h e user, new doublesided PFS:File and Report and Context MBA program discs. T h i s offer will be good for three months only, so users must follow the instructions below before July 30, 1985. After July 30, users will have to purchase double-sided replacement discs from Direct Marketing Division. T o participate in this free exchange program, customers must first send back their original master program discs. Context MBA users should send back both the MBA 2 and MBA 3 program discs. PFS:File and Report users should send back only the PFS: master program disc. These discs should be sent to: Double-Sided Disc Replacement Program Hewlett-Packard Company Personal Software Division Product Marketing 3410 Central Expressway Santa Clara, CA 95051 Users should be sure to keep their backup program discs, since delivery of the new double-sided discs may take u p t o six weeks. Even though t h e new media will be grey and double-sided, the program will be in single-sided format. As a result, PFS:File and Report and Context MBA can continue to be operated with either a single-sided or a double-sided disc drive. What not to do Do not send back the manual. Do not send back PFS:Write or PFS:Graph. These products a r e already shipped on double-sided (grey) discs. Do not send back any program discs that are grey. A grey disc is double-sided and thus does not need to be upgraded.

The HP LaserJet and ThinkJet printers now can hook up to the Macintosh thanks to special software drivers. T h e software drivers, Jetstart'" and Laserstart'", bring the ThinkJet and LaserJet printers and the Macintosh together with all the Macintosh printing capabilities. T h e software drivers work by substituting ThinkJet and LaserJet printer drivers in place of the Imagewriter driver on Macintosh application programs. T h e drivers will also reverse the process. T h e Jetstart and Laserstart drivers are compatible with Macintosh software that uses standard Macintosh printing conventions. T h a t means MacPaint, MacWrite, Multiplanc"',and Microsoft@BASIC. In addition, the RS-232-C ThinkJet printer will support (for text only) the H P 2623,2624B, 2627,2628, and 2392 terminals. Other computers that will interface with the RS-232-C ThinkJet printer include HP Touchscreen personal computers; IBM PC, PC AT, PC XT, and PCjr; and Apple IIc, IIe, and Macintosh. Compatibility with the Apple Macintosh is made possible by a special software driver, called Jetstart developed for H P by SoftStyle, Inc. Jetstart can be bought from H P (PIN 35177M) or from SoftStyle for $45 (US list). Offering all the features of the earlier versions, the RS-232-C ThinkJet printer is a fast, quiet, convenient solution to a host of text and graphic printing needs. LaserJet printer firmware update Artie Stone/BOI A number of the early LaserJet printers will require a firmware update in order to use three of our LaserJet printer font cartridges. The HP 92286G, H and J cartridges (Legal Elite, Legal Courier and Math Elite) will not be recogrlized as readable fonts by the LaserJet printer until the firmware upgrade is made. To determine if your customers' LaserJet printers need an upgrade, do the following: 1) Place the printer OFF LINE (press the ON LINE key on the front panel until the ON LINE light is off). 2) Press the SELF TEST key on the printer's front panel. 3) After the printer has completed the Self Test, examine the printout and observe the date code number located in the bottom left-hand corner of the ~ r i n t o u (see t examole). If the number is 840606 or greater (such as 840901 which represents September 1,1984), the printer does not require an upgrade. n 0 A U V rVAA U

HP FORTRAN 77/3000 released Bruce StowelVCLL HP FORTRAN 7713000 is now available. This new FORTRAN product for the HP 3000 is a superset of FORTRAN 77, the most recent ANSI FORTRAN standard. It provides a well-defined language standard for software portability and offers extensions that enhance the flexibility and power of the FORTRAN 77 language. New language features HP FORTRAN 7713000 offers major features not available in FORTRANl3000. IF-THEN-ELSE, Block DO, and DO-WHILE statements provide support for structured programming by eliminating the need for program labels and GOTOs. READ, WRITE, OPEN, CLOSE, and INQUIRE statements provide control and management of sequential or direct-access, formatted or unformatted files. DOUBLE COMPLEX data type and operations provide extended precision computation for engineering and scientific applications. INCLUDE statement allows insertion of program text (e.g. COMMON declarations) from another file. $IF-$THEN-$ELSE compiler directives provide conditional compilation. May 1. 1985
MPE system access HP FORTRAN 7713000 provides easy access to MPE capabilities. This includes programmatic access to MPE intrinsic functions; programmatic access to MPE subsystems, such as IMAGE, VPLUS, and DSG; and procedure call compatibility with other MPE languages, such as COBOL, FORTRANl3000, Pascal, and SPL. FORTRAN/3000 compatibility support HP FORTRAN 7713000 provides compatibility support for upgrade from FORTRANl3000: a conversion guide describes FORTRAN13000 to HP FORTRAN 7713000 conversion issues; a conversion utility, supplied with the compiler, translates FORTRAN13000 features that have HP FORTRAN 7713000 equivalents; language extensions, provided by HP FORTRAN 7713000, support most FORTRAN13000 features which do not have HP FORTRAN 7713000 equivalents. Choosing prospects for the HP 2689A is easy Matt Cuson/BOI Along with the visibility that the H P LaserJet printer has created, the laser printer market is growing tremendously. However, one of the hardest things about selling laser printers is finding good prospects. With the HP 2689A, you have the opportunity to pick and choose among your qualified leads. The opportunity The market for the HP 2689A (IBM mainframes) is large, mature, and easy to identifjr. Several good directories exist which list DP managers, type of system, mailing address, and telephone number. Usually they are expensive but the rewards can be tremendous. HP has on-line and batch access to the largest data base of IBM installations available. W e know the system, operating system, number of printers, number of systems, names, titles, new equipment plans, monthly rent, and more. Prospects and applications are easy to qualib. 'The main prospects are IBM mainframe users that are printing more than 150,000 pages per month who want a system printer. You want to look for forms replacement, paper saving (2:l or 4 : l listing), throughput, and print-quality issues. Stay away from graphics because it complicates the sale and is not a system-line printer solution. The 2689 is significantly less expensive to operate than the nearest competitor. 700,000 pages per month HP 2689A Xerox 8700

a print problem, but, in most cases, forewarns the operator that a preventive maintenance is needed.
HP has sold more laser printers than any other computer supplier in the world. The sales cycle for a laser printer is short relative to system sales. Most decisions for system printers are made within the data processing department and only go outside for financial approval. HP's support has been rated number one for four years. Use these opportunities to sell H P laser printing solutions to your IBM mainframe users.
HP 2689A customer data needed Chris Privon/BOI T o ensure the highest level of response and support for your H P 2689A customers, Boise Division has a special data base of H P 2689A installations. T h e purpose of this data base is threefold: (1) to ensure that shipments are made to customers with supported IBM operating systems; (2) to ensure your customer engineer is trained (or is scheduled for training) on the IBM system; and (3) to ensure that we a t Boise Division have the necessary information to assist the customer engineer and system programmer during installation. We will need this information from you, the sales rep, shortly after you place the order. A questionnaire requesting the following information will be sent to you via H P Desk:

MSTM Word provides the most complete Touchscreen personal computer word-processing solution, including automatic footnote support and our most complete LaserJet printer implementation; MultiMate's similarity to the Wang word processing system makes it particularly attractive to exWang users; The WordstarmProfessional, a long-standing favorite in the personal computer world, includes MailMerge, Correctstar and Star Index for a total word-processing solution; PFS: Write's ease of use has made it the most popular word-processing software package in the novice category. The following table summarizes and positions HP's word processing offerings. On the functionality scale, products are positioned according to the needs of the user, ranging from occasional, casual use to highvolume, sophisticated document preparation. The integration scale shows how closely the product is integrated with other HP software products. For instance, MultiMate files can be sent intact from one personal computer to another via HP Message and HP DeskManager, but they cannot be converted into another word processor's file format. On the other hand, Executive Memomaker and HP Word are both integrated with many other HP software products and conversion is available between the two file formats. HP Slate now works with HP 2392A terminal Steve Wright/OPD For those of you who have been waiting to use HP Slate with the new low-cost HP 2392A terminal, the waiting is over. HP Slate continues to be a popular, low-cost, basic word processor. Now HP Slate with the HP 2392A makes an excellent option for custorners who do not want to incur the extra cost of full word processing, but who do need some word-processing facilities. The new version of HP Slate (version A.04.03) is available on T-Mit Delta 1, and this fully supports a standard HP 2392A in half-screen mode if the terminal ID is set to "HP 2392A". Full--screenmode is available if the HP 2392A has the extended memory option. The HP 2392A is also supported by HP DeskManager (version A.03.00), so this new release of HP Slate is important for those HP Desk customers who want to include the HP 2392A terminal in their configuration. Note that the HP 2392A will not support localized versions of HP Slate for this release. This will be corrected in HP Slate version A.04.04, which will be offered through local software centers. Contact your !ocal software center for details of availability. Although HP Slate does not offer the full functionality of HP Word, it provides ideal basic word processing for very little extra cost, with the additional advantage that it can be used on almost any terminal.

In fact, error correction is the primary reason that higher-speed printers previously have not been supported as remote spooled printers. With this solution, the custonler is not as likely to lose data while printing. This is very important especially when printing invoicc:~,billings, or checks. Performance will vary depending on the number of devices that are connected to the HP 2334A and by the amount of data these devices are sending or receiving. For additional informistion about the HP 2334A, see "New software and hardware supported with the HP 2334A Multimux" in the Peripherals section. Many of you have been asking for a supported remote spooled printer solution. Sell an HP supported configuration in the HP 2334A.

Rich Suyehira/BOI With the introduction of the HP 2334A Multimux comes support of the HP 2563A, 2687A, and LaserJet printers as remote spooled printers on the HP 3000. Prior to the re-introduction of the HP 2334A in December 1984 there was no HP support of these printers over modems, except for the HP 2563A when used with HP's multipoint software. The HP 2653A, 2687A, and LaserJet printers are supported in either the statistical multiplexer (stat mux) or the cluster controller configuraticlns using the HP 2334A. New HP INVISION brochure available
Yvonne Raleigh/FSO
Rebecca Derrington/IRO
As you well know, reference sites are a crucial element in the application selling cycle. Assistance with reference sites located in the US and Canada are now available from Financial Systems Operation (FSO) for HPFA, HPPAY, and HPPCM. This information has already been successfully and enthusiastically used by many sales reps in the selling cycle. If interested, call Yvonne Raleigh a t 408-559-5536. Reference site information is best used for a qualified customer who has seen a product demonstration and wants to know who is successfully using the financial applications software. You can choose a reference site for this customer based on a variety of customer characteristics, such as company sales volume, modules purchased, use of assist?, CPU model, and so on. Once you decide which site best fits your situation, you will be given the sales rep's and/or software engineer's name and phone number. This ensures the privacy of the customer, and the sales engineerlsales rep control their reference sites (which I'm sure you will agree is essential). A variety of reference sites are available to the field; therefore, the same reference sites wjll not be used too often. Reference site information obtained from the customer data base will be updated frequently. Every month, new customers will be taken from HEART, and the sales rep will be contacted and asked to supply additional information. For existing customers, we will ask the assigned sales engineer, on a quarterly basis, to update the customer's satisfaction rating and implementation status.
In addition to the sales materials mentioned in the April 1 5 issue of Computer News ("HP INVISION ordering information"), there is also an HP INVISION brochure. Designed for customer mailings to arouse their interest and get them to call your HP sales office for more information, the front cover of the brochure is black and white and says, "Once Inventory Management was black and white." When you open the brochure, it says, "not anymore. . . ", and then when you open it again it is four-color with information about HP INVISION. T h e brochure illustrates the idea that a t one time distributors could afford to keep on hand whatever inventory was necessary to maintain sales. They didn't worry much about having excess inventory on hand. Now, with the cost of money rising and competition becoming more fierce, distributors have to focus more on all of their investments and streamline their operations. More and more distributors are looking a t managing their inventory more effectively to help them meet their profit objectives. Now distributors face a full spectrum of multifaceted opportunities. H P INVISION helps them attain their goals. Order PIN 5954-0478 from the Literature Distribution Center. T h e order limit is 25 copies (unless you're doing a mailing), and it is available for the US, UK, Canada, Japan, South Africa, and Australia only.

SPN moves ahead with sales support Rocky Gunderson/SPNO The SPN Program was officially made an Operation in November. The Marketing Department includes Product Marketing, Sales Development, Product Support, Training and Documentation, and a factorybased SWAT team. The SWAT team is a new group in SPN Marketing with the charter of providing technical pre- and post-sales support to the field in major SPN deals. Using experienced semicc~nductor engineers, this group will allow SPNO to provide timely factory expertise when required in critical sales situations. The SWAT team concept was a key component of the Thomson business and will be part of the pre-sales of a potential sale of SPN in the northeast. In the next two months, SPN will be offering field training classes to new and veteran sales reps of SPN and putting together new product information packets and slide sets. We are also working on a new integrated SPN demo. Please contact Steve Hoch, SPNO sales development manager, for assistance in any of your current or potential SPN sales opportunities, at 408-559-5303 or HP Desk HPC700120. SPN completes record quarter The Semiconductor Productivity Network Operation (SPNO) recently completed its most successful quarter ever. The SPN product line exited the first quarter of 1985 at 123 percent of quo~ta,and 211 percent growth over a strong 1984 first quarter. SPN products leveraged more than $6.5 million in HP 3000s, HP 1000s, and system peripherals. New business included Thomson Components, part of the Thomson Group, the largest corporation in France. The Thomson deal, for the automation of 11 semiconductor facilities, was the largest ordeir ever closed by the HP sales team in France. Other business included two new GE sites, an additional Northern Telecom site, and more Sperry business. Thanks to all of the field and factory people who worked so hard to get this business. The rest of 1985 continues to look promising for the SPN product line, with what should prove to be a 50 percent growth over the 1984 business level. The UK and Italian sales teams are each working on multimillion dollar SPN deals in heavily DEC-based accounts. Japan and the Far East are proving to be opportunities for SPN since each area already has successful SPN
installations, and the field teams are trained and experienced. SPN should be the dominant semiconductor manufacturing system in Japan and the Far East. Meanwhile, the US continues to provide new and add-on SPN business. Already holding a 65 percent share of the worldwide market for semicondu tor manufacturing systems, SPN will continue to be a major player in the very competitive and DEC-biased CIM (computer integrated manufacturing) system marketplace for semiconductor manufacturers.

Currently, our only real competitor is the DEC RC25. Advantages Most DEC systems do not support both a fixed1 removable drive ancl a disc with a %-inch cartridge tape. The HP 9000 and HP 1000 systems do support both. HP 7907 disc cartridge is $215 versus DEC's disc cartridge at $299. In addition to doing file-by-file backup via the host CPU, the HP 7907A will do a very fast push button disc-to-disc backup without system intervention. The DEC RC25 does not offer the latter. Military contractors will find the media retention option on the HP 7907A service contract appealing. It will allow them to keep the HP 7907A fixed disc1 mechanism if it ever fails for data security reasons. This option will add $8 to the monthly maintenance cost. Performance Properly setting your customer's expectation about performance is important when selling the 110 Extender. It is ideally :suited for many applications, such as data acquisition, where the Extender is capable of Input DMA rates equal to the CPU's. MaxCOMPUTER NEWS For HP Use Only
41
Manufacturing Systems
imum DMA rates are, of course, a function of the A600+, A700, or A900 backplanes. Output DMA of the Extender is limited to approximately 40 percent of the maximum bandwidth and thus makes the Extender's use less than ideal for applications like simulation where output rates are important. In any configuration, 110 interfaces critical to system performance - such a s the disc interface - should be installed in the computer, not the Extender. Other limitations associated with the Extender relate to the table space boundaries of RTE-A. Although the Extender will be capable of greatly expanding the 110 capability of the A-Series, it is recommended that you have your support engineer verify that adequate table space exists for specific configurations. More detailed information on I10 Extender performance will be included in the next RTE-A performance brief planned for June distribution. So, add one more to your long list of reasons why the A-Series family of real-time performers is the leader in value and performance. With the new I10 Extender, even more opportunities exist for your customers to solve their processing and 110 needs today and in the future. A data sheet is available today to assist you in selling the Extender. T h e field training manual will be included in the next A-Series mailer, which will be distributed to your office in June. All HP 1000 tall cabinets are not alike Dan Meitus/DSD Recently, a large defense contractor in the west expressed serious concern over the differences in the standard A-Series and magnetic tape tall cabinets. After installing both a 2199C and 7914ST in their "showcase" computer room, they realized that the cabinets were not alike in several ways. Please be sure that your customers are aware that not all HP tall (63-inch) cabinets are the same with regard to height, color of finish, front door latching and H P logo. Appearance of the H P 1000 219xC differs noticeable from the H P 7974A, 7978A, or 7914ST cabinets. T h e 219xC and 7914TD are housed in the same 29431x cabinet. T h e 7974 and 7978 come standard in a cabinet of their own, while the 7914ST uses one of the HP standard "Rosebud" cabinet designs. While these cabinets are similar in size and design, customers who consider uniformity of appearance of their computer system a s highly important should review these differences before planning to install two dissimilar cabinets next to one another. Please refer to the "Expansion and Racking" and "Mass Storage Device" sections of the most recent H P 1 0 0 0 System Designer Guide for additional information. Data Systems Division is working with the peripheral divisions to remedy these inconsistencies and will make an announcement if the situation should change.
New HP 1000 System Designer's Guide now available Ted Proske/DSD T h e H P 1 0 0 0 System Designer's Guide has been completely revised to enhance its usability and make it easier to update. All of the latest changes are incorporated - new peripheral devices, new A-Series memory based on 256K bytes of RAM, and the new A-Series I10 Extenders. New worksheets systematize specification of HP 1000 systems and facilitate determination of main and disc memory requirements, interface and cable requirements, and checking of RTE-A system space to help you avoid specifying a n unsupportable system. racking will also help keep you and IIP out of trouble with customers. Except in the compatibility matrices in Section 6.4, all obsolete products, from the HP 2103L computer through the Series 264X terminals, have been deleted to minimize confusion in the design of new systems. If information on obsolete products is important to you, save your old designer's guide for reference. In the future, we plan to update the .HP 1000 System Designer's Guide two or three times ;a year. There will be no more gaps of a year or more between updates to the guide. You can get your own personal copy of the May 1985 HP 1000 System Designer's Guide by having your purchasing department order it from Direct Marketing Division as PIN 92007-90001. The intra-corporate price is $6.90. The clerical workload involved in keeping the list of HP 1000 sales reps ancl sales engineers up to date and cost considerations have forced us to discontinue automatic distribution of HP 1000 System Dest&ner's Guides and updates. So, if you want this new guide, you have to order it, even if you used to receive it via automatic distribution.
Image/1000-I1 enhanced Pat Adamiak/CS Y The A.85 enhancements provide some exciting new features to help you sell Image/1000-I1 (PIN 92081). Your customers will be happy to learn of full Image/ 1000-11 support for the code and data separation capability of the RTE-A VC+ operating system. For the first time they will be able to enjoy the convenience of having the cartridge tape drive as a supported backup device for Image/1000-11. The A.85 group of enhancements also allows Irnage/1000-I1 users to partially, but not fully, utilize the hierarchical file system.
May 1, 1985
Code and data separat1,on (CDS) support allows programs which access Image/1000-I1 to gain the advantages of this feature of RTE-A VC+. CDS makes handling of programs easier than ever by breaking large programs into segments transparently and automatically. CDS also allows code common to multiple programs to share one cocle partition while owning distinct data partitions -. saving memory that would otherwise be required by multiple copies of code. In addition, Image/1000-I1 now takes advantage of CDS to reduce the amount of data memory required to run the product. The cartridge tape drive (CTD) is now a supported backup device for Ima,ge/1000-11. CTD is an integral feature of the popular Command Set/80(CS/80) family of disc drives. Image/1000-I1 users can now use their CS/80 drive for data base backup, eliminating the need for a separate tape drive. Image/1000-I1 has also implemented a subset of the changes required to fully utilize the hierarchical file system. The Image/1000-I1 utilities DBDS, DBBLD, QUERY, DBUTL, DBSTR, DBRST, DBULD, DBLOD, and DBSPA now support the use of the file descriptors of the hierarchical sysltem as well as FMGR file names. Image/1000-I1 root files and data sets still use only the FMGR system, however. The modification of Image/1000-I1 to provide for full support of the hierarchical file systern is a high priority item in our plans for future produ'zt enhancements. Note that these enhancements apply only to Image/ 1000-11. Image/1000-I (PIN 92069) has not been enhanced in the A.85 The A.85 enhancements combined with Image/100011's already extensive feature set and sophisticated recovery features make it the premier minicomputer data base management system in its price class.

Two new emulators available for HP 64000 system Dianne Jarboe/LSD The HP 64253S, the second generation 280 Emulation Subsystem, is designed specifically for the high-speed 280H microprocessor and also supports the 280A, 280B, and 280L microprocessors. Allthough this new emulator supports the current feature set of the previous 280 emulator (HP 64252S), additional new features result in a very flexible emulator that will cover most, if not all, of your customer's 280 applications. Real-time execution (no wait statles) up to 8MHz, independent of emulation or target memory access. 16 software breakpoints. 64K bytes of self-contained emulation memory. DMA capability in or out of emulation memory Tracing of DMA cycles. Bank-switching capability for memory system with more than 64K bytes of memory. Displaylmodify alternate registers. Simultaneous display of all registers. Improved pod configurability. 256K byte memory mapping resolution. For customers who have received the HP 64252S, no upgrade has been planned. Obsolescence of the 64252s is scheduled for the end of this summer, which allows your customers time to transition to the HP 64253S, the most comprehensive 280 emulator on the market.. US list price is $5,500, and deliveries are scheduled at four to six weeks. The HP 64227s Emulation Subsystem opens the 80286 microprocessor market for HF'. Although this product is a user definable emulator-based design, the 64227s is, in fact an HP product (not an Application Note) with operating manual, date sheet, standard HP emulator sheetmetal package, leadless chip cqrrier probe, and so on. Thus, customers no longer have to worry about building UDEs for them:jelves in order to get 80286 emulation support on the I-IP 64000 system. The HP 64227s consists of the 6427KA GP Emulation Card, and the 64227B, 80286 Emulation Pod, with software and appropriate cables. This emulator requires an HP 64156s Memory System, and the 64302A Emulation Bus (internal) Analyzer. With this May 1, 1985
configuration, and the many compatible HP 64000 analysis and development tools, you can produce a better 80286-based product in less time, to gain a competitive edge. The data sheet for this new emulator is PIN 59539271, available through the Literature Distribution Center. US list price is $4,750, and availability is scheduled for six to eight weeks. For further information regarding these new Emulators, please contact your RSE at the Logic Systems Division.
HP 64000 Plus ad campaign Dianne Jarboe/LSD The HP 64000 Logic Development System for total microprocessor suppc~rthas a complete measurement set to rest, exercise, and debug microprocessor-based products at any stage of development. Emulators for over two dozen proce:jsor families display targetsysten~activity from .the very first code module. There are analyzers for troubleshooting and optimizing (slate analysis, and real-time, high-level language debugging).
An HP 64000 System cluster, with up to six development stations, a hard disc, and a printer, form a distributed network for quick response and close communication among designers working from a common data base. And now, with the introduction of the HP 64000 Plus system, these clusters can be added to a larger computer-based network for larger software design teams and accelerated project schedules.

T h e Shared Resource Management (SRM) system for H P 9000 computers has been enhanced with a new file and printerlplotter server and a simplified cabling scheme. These enhancements also include a price reduction of 3 0 percent over the previous SRM system. T h e previous SRM system consisted of a Y920A computer, five boards, interface cards, and a heavy cable to link the workstations together. T h e new SRM system replaces the box and boards with a single server board containing the CPU, YiM byte of RAM, DMA circuitry, HP-IB interface, and backplane control logic housed in a 325mm box. When combined with a video monitor and keyboard, the new server hardware provides the same capabilities in a much smaller package. T h e new cabling scheme replaces the SRM Multiplexer and 13mm cable, which was limited to 60 meters in length, with a 5mm RG-58 coax cable that can extend up to one kilometer. T h e new cable is thin enough to fit through conduit, so it can be placed out of sight, and is available at a lower price than the previous cables. T h e cable connects to the computers through standard BNC connectors and a new coax adaptor module that attaches directly to the SRM interface card. Up to 2 5 nodes (including workstations and servers) can be physically connected in daisy-chain fashion. T h e computers are connected electrically in bus fashion so that the link is not broken if one computer is powered down. No modification is necessary to the operating system or applications software of existing SRM workstations or to the SRM operating system to use the new link hardware. Hardware upgrade kits for existing SRM systems will be available in several months.

You can save yourself time, trouble, and unhappy customers if you consult our X-YRecorder and Graphics Plotter Selection Guide (PIN 5953-9772) before recommending a plotter or recorder for use with HP instruments. Why? Because there are slight differences on the instruction sets of our plotters; all plotters are not compatible with all instruments. A case in point is the HP 4145 Semiconductor Parameter Analyzer and the HP 7090. T h e HP 4145 uses the user-defined character instruction, UC, to generate the delta (A) character on a Schmoo plot. T h e H P 7090 ignores this instruction. It does not draw the character nor does it leave blank spaces where t h e deltas should have been, so while the plot may look reasonable, it is very inaccurate. Only recommend the H P 7470,7475, or 7550 with the H P 4145. T o ensure your success, all combinations listed in the selection guide have been tested and we know they work. So remember, check the selection guide before you sell San Diego Division products with instruments.

Discontinuance plans for HP 7970/7971 tape product family Sandy Hansen/GLD The HP 7970 tape product line has been very successful over the past 10 to 12 years since its introduction. Since the early 1970s, systems have become faster and more powerful, and disc storage on these systems has grown at a tremendous rate. With the introduction of the higher performance and less expensive HP 7974A and 7978A tape drives, demand for the earlier drive is decreasing and it is necessary to discontinue the HP 7970 tape product line. Discontinuance plan field training manual Greeley Division is announcing the discontinuance plans for the HP 7970B, 7970C, 7970E, and 7971A ?hinch magnetic tape product line with the 7970/7971 Tape Product Family Discontinuance Plan field training manual (PIN 5853-68491, which will be delivered to the entire Sales Force 15 sales and service organization by the middle of May. Three-phase discontinuance plan The discontinuance will be accomplished in three steps. (1) In August 1985 we will remove the options with very low demand (HP 3000 Series 111, slave drives, HP 7970C, and some special options will not be orderable as new equipment). (2) On November 1, 1985, all HP-IB options for the HP 1000 A-Series, HP 3000 Series 3X. 4X. and 6X. HP 9000 Series 200 and

500, and HP 9835 and 9845 systems will be removed. The HI' 7970B options will not be orderable after that date as new equipment. Many of these options will then be available on a -remarketed basis from Finance and Remarketing Division. (3) On November 1, 1986, the remaining HP 100'0EIF-Series tape drive options, component OEM options, remarketd options, and accessories will be discontinued. Ten-year support for discontinued tape products If vour customers have concerns about Hewlett~ a i k a r dsupporting their HP 7970 tape product, you can reassure them that full hardware and software support. for most of the HP 7970171 tape options will continue for a period of 10 years after November 1, 1986.
