Concept Submission Student Name: Jeffrey Hong Date: 08/13/2013 NA ME YOUR A PP Be creative. An app name can make all the difference. Think about some of the best apps available, they are usually less than 11 characters and describe or hint at the user experience inside (i.e., Twitter: tweets are small sounds that birds make OR small bursts of information). Brainstorming room... Existing names/ideas: DashTop Mobile - refers to wireless mobile devices on a vehicle’s dashboard. A quick search will return a plethora of Dashtop Mobile Equipment including Satellite Radio, GPS, Vehicle Tracking, On Star, etc. Onboard Camera- refers to cameras located onboard a vehicle Dash Cam- same as onboard camera Recording- refers to data collection – either as audio, text or video in most contexts Key terms: Live Video Recording, Accident Recording, Event Recording, Emergency Help, Background Application, Evidence Logging, On-Board Camera Possible Names: Dash Recorder, Dash Recording, Dash Record, Road Watcher, Safe Watch, Eyes On, Car Camera, Car Cam Best Name?: Dash’Corder Mobile will be the “official” name of the application, but Dash’corder will be the marketed name. Dash 'Corder - The " ' " takes the place of the "Re" in Recorder similar to "Camcorder" where the "corder" means recorder. Dash'Cord sounds okay, but without the "er", "Cord" by itself reminds people of ropes which is not the application’s intention. Slogan: Event Recorder, Accident Reporter (the application allows users to record any event occurring in front of their vehicle; and if they ever witness a crash or are in one, the application can report the accident either automatically for the user, or manually if the user witnesses a crash. NAME OF YOUR APP: Samsung Mobile App Academy Dash’corder 1 Concept Submission Student Name: Jeffrey Hong Date: 08/13/2013 DESCRIBE YOUR A PP (5 0 0 WORDS) What will users be able to do? What makes your app unique? Is it going to help, inform or entertain? On Board Vehicle Cameras have been used on emergency vehicles for a long time now and these systems are slowing transitioning to civilian markets. However, these systems are very expensive and are not worth the price for most consumers. Dash'corder will change this. By using a smart-phone as a dash camera, the user can choose to record what goes on in front of their vehicle for personal reference or as evidence. In addition, the Dash’corder Mobile application will run as a background program so users can still use their hands free communication devices or other wireless applications while in the vehicle without interference. Features      On-board live recording with GPS mapping o By recording on a three minute loop, the application will not take up a lot of memory space because it records new footage over the old. o By storing video from three minutes prior to the start of the actual recording, the user will have access to pre-event footage. o All video recorded will have a data and location stamp with the location provided by the GPS integrated in the phone. Users will have to make sure their GPS is turned on before using this feature. o To begin recording an event, users must double tap the ½ inch translucent slow flashing circle on the phone’s screen. The red circle indicates that the program is running and will not interfere with other functions on the phone. Automatic Collision Notification o Accelerometers from the phone will detect sudden decelerations as experienced in a crash and cross check with the phone’s microphone to detect collision related sound. Once a crash has been suspected, the application will ask the driver if emergency assistance is required. If there is no response, a prerecorded message will be sent to 9-1-1 with the location of the suspected accident and impact speed. It would then activate speaker phone so the operator can hear what is going on and allow the operator to attempt to establish contact with the driver. o Users can also program the application to call anyone listed under their in case of emergency (ICE) contacts. Background Application o Running as a background application, users will not lose the ability for their phones to act as music, communication, and or navigation devices. o Only the small red slow flashing circle on the screen and a red apostrophe in the status bar will indicate that the application is running. Mounted interface o The phone can be mounted either on the dashboard or the windshield and will be charging while it’s mounted. This mount tackles three birds with one stone by allowing the camera to be positioned correctly for the app to run correctly while charging the phone while keeping texting fingers away from the phone when operating a motor vehicle. Ease of use o The large and clearly labeled buttons on the main screen allow users to select the right button, even under stress. Samsung Mobile App Academy 2 Concept Submission Student Name: Jeffrey Hong Date: 08/13/2013 WHICH MOBILE PL ATFORM(S) WILL YOU DE V ELOP THI S A PP FOR? CHECK OFF A BOX BELOW: Smartphone Tablet Both HOW I S YOUR A PP GOING TO SOLV E A CURRENT NEIGHBORHOOD PROBLEM A ND HELP YOUR COMMUNIT Y? Will your app be a call to action, a medium to house information, a means to bring your community together... or all three? This application will potentially keep the community safer by promoting safe driving practices and give drivers the ability to record events and call for help. With a large amount of road users having the ability to record events and call for help, the application will reduce the “bystander” effect and allow users to call emergency services much faster. Road rage can also be reduced because no one wants to be caught committing the criminal offense. With Automatic Collision Notification, the phone will be able to able to call for help in the event of an accident, even with an injured or unconsciousness driver. Because of the nature of the application, the phone must be mounted on the dash or windshield which will also prevent users from engaging in dangerous distracted driving activities such as texting while driving. The app forces users to use the hands free applications for their social networking and non-speech communication while driving. Accessories: Additional accessories can be bought to compliment the Dash’corder application. A rear mounted Bluetooth enabled camera can record the rear and act as a backup camera as well. Limitations of Dash’Corder 1. 2. Users have to be willing to mount their phones on the car dashboard or windshield. The application can do an auto start once so turning on the application will not be a hassle. Users must buy a mount in order to use the application to its full potential. This mount will be made of ABS plastic and have a quick release for taking the phone off the mount. The mount will hopefully range from $3-$5 and should not pose a problem for most users considering the type of phones they’re using already. Samsung Mobile App Academy 3 Concept Submission Student Name: Jeffrey Hong Date: 08/13/2013 WHO I S BEST SUITED TO US E THI S A PP ? Why are they your target audience? Hint: Be descriptive about who they are, what they like and why this app is perfect for them. Primary Target: The average Joe with a personal vehicle The target of this application is for anyone who operates a private motor vehicle in any nation. Most countries in the world have cellular reception; and with compatible smart phones, anyone can use the app. At first, users may feel awkward mounting their phones on their dash or windshield before they drive, but once they have adapted to this process, they will see that now it is much easier to call for help, focus on the road, and have that guardian angel to automatically call for help when no one is around to come to their assistance. Dash’corder can also prevent road-rage. Instead of yelling expletives in the vehicle and trying to tailgate another vehicle that just cut the user of the Dash’corder off, the person driving with Dash’corder can simply click the record button and it will have events from three minutes before that point and will stop recording when the user clicks the stop recording icon on the phone’s screen. Afterwards, if necessary, the Dash’corder user can even turn the video in to police as evidence of a reckless driver if necessary. Drivers will be advised not to enter dangerous situations to record video and will also be advised not to make turning in others a habit. The point of the application is to protect oneself and to help others, not to make others live in fear. Secondary Target: Commercial Trucking and Delivery Companies Commercial trucking and delivery companies can greatly benefit from having an onboard camera. Instead of paying expensive dollars to buy a camera system for each truck, the companies can sign contracts with their workers to mount the worker’s phones in the vehicles every time they drive. This way, if there are any conflicts and lawsuits filed against the company for accidents, the companies can prove if their drivers are not at fault. WHO A RE YOUR COMPE TITORS A ND WHAT S E TS YOUR A PP A PA RT FROM THEIRS? In the app world it’s survival of the fittest. Describe differences in design, content and purpose; the weaknesses of your competitor’s app, and how your app turns those weaknesses into strengths. There are many devices out there today that have similar functions, but they come at a very expensive cost. Dash cameras typically range from $30 to over $500. The $30 ones are usually of very low quality, hard to use, and not reliable. Other similar Automatic Collision Notification (ACN) devices and roadside assistance service devices typically come with certain brands of cars and require yearly fees to operate. These include GM’s OnStar, Ford Sync, Toyota’s Safety Connect, and BMW’s Assist among others. Not all the listed ACN devices require monthly payments, however, they are only on certain vehicles that are of a certain year of manufacture or later. This limitation effectively excludes 86.4% of all vehicles on the road. (The data is based on the National Automobile Dealers Association’s 2001 study on the average age of vehicles in operation in the United States.) With Dash’corder, drivers no longer need a newer vehicle to have similar capabilities. My911, an application for smartphones, can detect collisions and call for assistance. However, My911 cannot help call 9-1-1 for another driver in an accident. When seconds count, emergency services are only minutes away. Every second it takes to dig a phone out of a pocket or purse to dial 9-1-1, is each second that is lost for emergency services to arrive on scene. Dash’corder eliminates that problem. Dash’corder was thought up independently of My911, although they share some similar characteristics. Dash’corder is different from all other applications because it uses preventive technique and proactive measures to keep drivers safe. Having the phone placed on the dash or windshield will prevent drivers from texting while driving. This preventive measure will take away a large portion of distracted driver caused accidents, and no other apps to prevent texting while driving will be required. In addition, Dash’corder’s pre-event recording and easy user interface allows everyone to use the application with ease. As a background program, users can be running Navigation Apps, traffic alerts, Weather Applications, music, hands free calls, and much more at the same time.
