I will be at the Canada North Resources Expo in Prince George, B.C., May 2627. The show is a showcase of the resources sectors’ leading companies and products; the event covers four acres of indoor and outdoor space with tons of big iron. In this issue, we are featuring mining. Mining is important to B.C. A recent report by PricewaterhouseCoopers states t hat t he mining industry, especially in B.C., has a lot to be optimistic about. According to the report, the stability of prices and a more optimistic industry outlook have led to increased investment in the sector. As well, the Federal and B.C. governments have renewed initiatives designed to boost mining. In March, the Federal Government extended the Mineral Exploration Tax Cred it (METC) t h roug h March 2018. The METC is a measure designed to encourage junior mining companies to raise new equity through flow-through shares to finance early stage grassroots exploration. The B.C. Government stated in this year’s provincial budget that it will extend its B.C. mining flow-through share tax credit through December 31, 2017. Mining companies are also in a stronger position financially. “Gross mining revenue from survey participants was reported as $8.7 billion compared to $7.7 billion in 2015 and $8.2 billion in 2014. The 2016 year-over-year increase was driven almost entirely by increased coking coal sales, amid higher coal prices,” states the report. Also, cash flow from operations was $2.6 billion in 2016, up from $1.7 billion in 2015. E mploy ment a lso i n- Nathan Medcalf // Editor [email protected] creased. Survey respondents reported 9,329 people employed in mining, which is up from 9,221 in 2015. We completed our social media thank-you campaign. A total of 8 people who followed/liked/subscribed to one of Equipment Journal’s social media platforms or signed up for our newsletter won either a gift card or a model replica of a machine. And, thank you to Advance Construction Equipment, Bobcat of Toronto, a nd Strongco Equipment for providing the model replicas. By using a rotating telehandler, Soncin Construction could avoid the delays and costs of using scaffolding. The company purchased a Merlo Roto 40.26. The 40.26 has a maximum lift height of 26 metres (85 feet) and a maximum load capacity of 4,000 kg (8,800 pounds). On the Bayview and Lawrence bridge project, Soncin Construction is using the Merlo Roto 40.26 to gain access to the understructure of the bridge and remove the drainage boxes, to feed material up from the bottom and saved a significant amount of money by not installing scaffolding. The company also appreciates the versatility of their new telehandler; with it, they are able to use just one machine for multiple sections of the project. “It is so versatile; we are using it all the time for various lifting task,” says Dennis Soncin, owner, Soncin Construction. It is at IFPE where the technologies that power heav y equipment are exhibited. For most machines, that means a diesel engine. Here are summaries of many of the engine announcements made by major OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) at the show (March 7-11 in Las Vegas, Nevada). CUMMINS POINTS TO THE FUTURE OF OFF-HIGHWAY DRIVELINES Cummins Inc. (picture on A3) announced trials of concept future drivelines for off-highway equipment. “Approaching our second century, we see alternative power as a complement to diesel. We call it energy diversity, providing a range of powertrain solutions for customers: clean diesel, renewables, natural gas, gasoline, hybrids, and electric power,” said Shelley Knust, Executive Director – Off-Highway Engineering. Cummins understands that OEM’s want more ef- ficient, clean, and capable powertrains, with an expectation to do more with less, and improved performance and transient response while reducing fuel consumption, tailpipe (including carbon dioxide) and noise emissions. P a r a l le l h y br id s , f or example, can deliver efficiency improvements for large forklift trucks. An 8to 16-ton truck using a 100 kW diesel plus a 10 kW to 25 kW motor generator is showing major fuel consumption improvements, up to 28%. Integrating the electric motor means that the driveline delivers better transient response while the engine runs at more optimum operating points. A plug-in hybrid is suitable for applications such as mobile cranes, using diesel for transport and plug-in for crane operation. That allows silent working with reduced tailpipe emissions on urban construction sites. Fuel consumption is reduced by up to 50% on the overall duty cycle. A full-electric driveline, being trialled in a delivery van, will offer a solution for a range of off-highway equipment, such as drills, underground mine trucks, and terminal tractors. Using a direct DC drive with 200 kW (267 hp) peak propulsion/regen, it has a 62 kWh NMC lithium ion battery Deutz on display at IFPE. Deutz’s new engines are the product of a collabpack with a four-hour charge orative partnership with Liebherr and are well-suited to excavators and time. wheel loaders, explains Deutz. DEUTZ’S EXPANDED ENGINE PORTFOLIO IS FUTURE DRIVEN Deutz presented its expanded engine portfolio with cubic capacities now ranging from 2.2 to 18.0 litres. In the spirit of the sloga n, “Fut u re Dr iven – engine technology for tomorrow,” Deutz unveiled its new four-cylinder TCD 5.0 and TCD 9.0 diesel engines and six-cylinder TCD 12.0, TCD 13.5, and TCD 18.0 en- gines (not at the show) to the American market. The Deutz TCD 5.0 will be introduced worldwide in 2019 to meet the next EU Stage V emissions standard. The engine will also comply with US Tier 4 Final. This compact, t u rbocha rged a nd cha rge-a i r-cooled, five-cubic-litre diesel engine generates 100-150 kW (135-200 hp) and 660 ft-lbs of torque. The engine produces more power from a small- er cubic capacity, enabling customers to replace larger displacement engines with more fuel-efficient and compact four-cylinder engines. The TCD 5.0 is a brand-new de s i g n w it h m i n i mu m pipework and fewer components for less complexity and maintenance. The new 9.0-cubic-litre is well-suited to excavators and wheel loaders, says Deutz. Together, with the TCD 12.0 and 13.5, these engines will follow a standardized family design with common cus- @EQUIPJOURNAL MAY 29, 2017 tomer interfaces and high component commonality. In the future, the Deutz TCD 18.0 will mark the upper end of the power scale. Its engine, designed much like a six-cylinder in-line engine, boasts up to 830 hp (620 kW) and 2,655 fl-lbs of torque. All four engines (TCD 9.0 to 18.0) are the product of a collaborative partnership with the Liebherr Group. Deut z pla n s to m a rket these Liebherr-manufactured engines under its own brand name and make them available in 2019 via the worldwide Deutz dealership and service network. FPT PRESENTS NEW POWERFUL ENGINE FOR DIVERSE APPLICATIONS FPT Industrial launched its new 20-litre engine—the FPT V20. The FPT V20 has been specifically developed to match all the require- ments coming from different application fields. Thus, it is suitable for both stationary and mobile applications, such as construction, power generation, military, agriculture, and tailways. The V20 is best-in-class for power-to-weight ratio (13% more than 12 cylinders competitors’ average), claims the company, delivering high performance while preserving vehicle stabilit y and reducing load on axles. The V20 is also the most compact engine of its category, minimizing impact on vehicle dimensions and load capacity. The V20 features top efficiency benefits: it permits up to 2% of savings on fuel compared to 12-cylinder engines averages thanks to lower friction and smaller displacement. The D2862 LE13x has a power output range from 588 to 816 kW (800 to 1,110 hp). Waste gate charging allows for a maximum torque of 2,730 to 3,590 ft-lbs at low speeds (at 1,300-1,400 rpm). The omission of exhaust gas recirculation results in lower heat dissipation from the engine, which means that a correspondingly smaller radiator can be used. Due to its additional modular exhaust gas aftertreatment system with variable set-up options for the individual components, the engine can be used in a wide range of applications in construction machinery, and it meets the Tier 4 final and EU Stage V emissions standards without exhaust gas recirculation, purely via selective catalytic reduction. A common-rail injection system reduces noise levels and delivers reduced fuel consumption. Volvo Penta has selected to use uncooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), which delivers highly effective heat management for the engine. An electrical exhaust pressure governor (EPG) and inlet throttle enable the system to function without the need to inject fuel into the exhaust stream to raise the temperature. With this approach, the exhaust gas has an optimal temperature when it passes through the EATS. Low heat rejection from the complete system means that less cooling is required. This powerful combination leads to increased efficiency and uptime for the operator. 450-437-8848 [email protected] FAX: 450-430-5352 1983 PAYSTAR 5000, 4x4, Cummins 270, auto trans, front harness - clean. $19,500. 1983 WESTERN STAR, 6x6, Cummins 270 HP, 18-46 axles, good condition! $57,000. 1987 FORD F-700, 4x4, GM Diesel, long frame, good condition. $15,500. 1988 JETAIR II, Cummins, high-velocity air duct, very clean. $55,000. 1978 SMI 5250, GM - GM, low hours, $39,500. fresh paint. 2003 BOMAG 180AD Cummins, 5,800 hours, 66” drum. The telehandler’s hightech access plat for m equipped with a telescopic boom and incorporating its own extension and slewing functions is referred to by the manufacturer as “Space System”; this feature makes it possible to reach less accessible places. The Space System can be configured to provide personnel ac- cess over 9 metres (29.5 feet) below street level. “Usi ng t he Roto w it h the Space system saved us time and money without compromising safety,” says Soncin. Another benefit to MCSS telehandlers is the Merlin (Merlo Local Interactive Network) system; the system provides a new way to electronically manage all the operating parameters of the machine. The main operating conditions and all information necessary to the operator are continuously displayed in real time. The Merlin system a lso manages all safety functions, is a tool for advanced and remote diagnostics, and can serve as an anti-theft system and immobilizer. The Merlin system features real-time display of the centre of gravity position of the machine and load, and how it moves during machine operation. The system also monitors the distance between the load and ground, distance between load and machine centreline, and the weight of the load being handled. The operator can predefine the working area of the machine by pre-setting the limits for turret rotation, boom lift angle, and extension. A digital multifunctional radio control allows the operator to remotely control the machine, and the radio control is bi-directional, meaning it can both send and receive commands to and from the machine. @EQUIPJOURNAL MAY 29, 2017 T:10.375” A23 S:9.375” ENTIRE FACTORY. For the launch at ConExpo-Con/Agg last March, Hamm presented a DV+ 70i model weighing 7.7 tons. Other models are set to follow in 2018. These pivot-steered DV+ series tandem and combi rollers are economical to use, easy to operate, and designed for maximum productivity, claims the company. An intelligent drive control plus pivot steering with four steering modes and large turning angles form the basis for the highest possible compaction quality. The design is well thought out, enabling an excellent view of the drums and the work environment, an important point when it comes to getting the smoothest mats and satisfying the strictest quality and safety requirements. LONG WORK INTERVALS = HIGH PRODUCTIVITY Refuelling breaks interrupt the compaction process. To avoid them, Hamm has equipped the DV+ series tandem rollers with large water and fuel tanks. Filling is extremely user-friendly because the water can be replenished centrally from the ground very quickly via a pressurized supply of at least 14.7 psi as a standard feature. Because the tanks are linked together via communicating pipework, they are filled simultaneously. Connection to a hydrant is also an option. Alternatively, water can be gravity-fed from above in the traditional way via one of the four filling spouts on the top. Replenishment of diesel and hydraulic fluid is also conveniently arranged: both can be carried out from ground level. THE EASY DRIVE OPERATING CONCEPT Despite the extensive machine functions, operation of the DV+ is intuitive and quickly learned. The key to this is the Easy Drive operating concept, developed by Hamm in collaboration with universities and experts in ergonomics, as well as roller drivers from different countries. At the heart of the operating concept is an ergonomically optimized operator platform with many inventive details. For example, the seat allows the driver to adopt a relaxed sitting position, facing in the direction of travel in all situations, as it can be turned mechanically by 90 degrees in either direction, and shifted to the left or right as standard. As an option, the seat can also be electrically shifted and rotated by up to 350 degrees. The height, suspension, and depth of the seat, as well as the position of the armrests, also are individually adjustable, as is the steering column angle. Thanks to the wide range of adjustment options, drivers will quickly find a healthy sitting position in the DV+, whatever their physique. Another key feature of Easy Drive is its operating structure. A steering wheel is used for steering. All other important functions are operated via a joystick and the multifunction armrest. Here, the driver is able to see all the keys on the joystick. All other operating elements are arranged around the joystick in such a way that the most frequently used ones are placed closest to it. At the same time, the operation is designed to be entirely language-neutral. Hamm uses colour coding to achieve unambiguous assignment of the functions and a clear overview. Easy Drive provides numerous benefits in and around the operator platform as well, such as a wide access way to the platform or spacious cab, foldable armrests (on request), or an easy exit with tiltable steering column. In this way, getting on and off becomes even easier and safer. Documents and personal items can be securely stored in the many compartments around the seat, and two 12 V sockets provide power for a cell phone or ice chest. Last but not least, in the optional cab, excellent sound insulation reduces noise levels from the already quiet engines. ALL-ROUND VISIBILITY FROM THE PLATFORM AND PANORAMIC CAB The Hamm DV+ is available as a tandem roller with double vibration drums or with oscillation and vibration drums, and also as a combi roller. be used even in the most strictly regulated markets, such as California. The new automatic engine stop system can also be incorporated as an optional extra; it switches the engine off during extended periods of inactivity, saving fuel. PRECISE STEERING AND SMART DRIVE CONTROL Hamm offers two versions of the DV+ for North America: with ROPS roof or with fully glazed ROPS panoramic cab. In both cases, drivers of the DV+ can enjoy a good view of the drum edges at all times. This has been made possible through the innovative design of the platform or cab and of the water tanks. A special feature is the glass viewing pane in the floor that allows an unobstructed view of the drums from above. On the models with ROPS cab, standard split doors ensure ample fresh air: the upper half can be rotated by 180 degrees, the lower by 85 degrees. When the door is closed, air is led through the window vents to the interior, and in winter, ventilation slots ensure speedy de-icing. With the DV+, surfaces can be quickly compacted to a high standard because all components in these rollers are perfectly matched to one another. An important factor is the always evenly distributed weight of the DV+. This is due to the positioning of the engine in the center of the machine and the two-part water tank distributing the weight evenly in all operational states. The standard split drums fitted as standard feature vibration, and represent a further plus factor for quality. They ensure perfectly compacted asphalt layers, even in tight curves. There is also a very large turning angle, and the enormous track offset of the pivot steering allows the DV+ to be steered with great sensitivity in four different steering modes. FUTURE-PROOF ENGINE TECHNOLOGY THREE MODELS WITH MANY OPTIONS AVAILABLE All DV+ series models are equipped with state-of-the-art engines. This enables the DV+ 70i with its 75 hp (56 kW) engine to satisfy the requirements of Tier 4 / Stage IIIB emissions requirements. The power pack filters the soot particles with a highly effective diesel particulate filter as part of the exhaust gas purification. This means that the rollers are equipped with future-proof technology that can The first roller in this series to be launched in North America will be the DV+ 70i with an operating weight of 7.7 tons. It will be available in three versions: as a double vibration roller (VV), as an oscillation roller (VO = vibration drum at front, oscillation drum at rear), and as a combi roller (VT) with vibratory drum front and pneumatic tires at rear. All vibration drums are split. Vo l v o C o n s t r u c t i o n Equipment’s PT125C ninewheeled pneumatic tire roller is an adaptable machine that delivers uniform smoothness and long-lasting performance. Designed for roadway construction and resurfacing applications, the machine employs a kneading action for the compaction of hot and warm mix asphalt. The PT125C is also appropriate for chip seal applications, thanks to its heavy-duty 14-ply tires, which press the aggregate into the binder without fracturing. “The PT125C would be a great fit for any job using stiffer mixes, or as a complement to compactors on any asphalt paving job where high density and smooth finish are key factors,” said Mark Eckert, Global Product Manager at Volvo Construction Equipment. PRESSURE MAKES PERFECT The maximum operating weight of the machine can be adjusted from 4,450 kg (9,830 pounds) to 11,340 kg (25,000 pounds) by ballasting with different materials. This, plus the central tire inflation system enables the operator to meet the pressure desired on a particular job. By adjusting the air in the tires, the operator can secure high contact pressure at a moment’s notice. The rubber tires are built to carry the heaviest loads for increased performance without compromising component life. The four front tires are staggered in position to provide overlap with the five rear tires, resulting in full width coverage. Front and rear tires oscillate independently and conform to the work surface to deliver uniform density and sealing, even on irregular surfaces. The new Sakai SW654ND offers today’s paving cont rac tors a n osc i l lator y tandem drum roller in a 1.48-metre (58-inch) drum width for speedier, more profitable compaction. The design upgrade offers improved operating efficiency as well as ease-of-maintenance. Applications include both thin and thick asphalt lift compaction, as well as compaction of coarse graded asphalt mixes and aggregate base and sub-base layers. The SW654 tandem roller’s fuel efficiency is based on a 3.3-litre Kubota, EPA Tier 4 emissions compliant engine coupled with Sakai’s new ECO Compaction Mode (ECM). ECM reduces fuel consumption up to 37% claims the company. The SW654ND roller features Sakai’s unique “ND” con f ig u rat ion. N D-series asphalt rollers have independent dual drum v ibrat ion or oscillat ion capability from twin eccentric shafts. Amplitude and frequency for the ND version of the SW654ND are 0.52 mm at 2,940 vibrations per minute. “While vibration is still used on the overwhelming majority of compaction jobs to achieve density,” Steele said, “we are seeing more and more jobs spec’d as ‘no-v ibe’, meaning t hat you cannot engage your vibration,” said Josh Steele, Market ing Manager for Sakai. Sakai’s unique ND configuration, he said, increases versatility by giving paving contractors a choice between up-and-dow n v ibrator y action and the gentler forward-and-back action of an oscillating roller on both drums. And the selection can be made with a flip of a switch on the operator’s console for seamless transitions from the vibratory to no-vibe sections of a job on the fly. While oscillation mode is effective in both thin and thick layer applications, it is especially beneficial when a mat is being built up with thin layers or in jobs, for instance, paving over sensitive structures, such as bridges, in which vertical impact is undesirable. “Changing the direction of force from vertical to horizontal allows the drum, in effect, to massage the mat to density,” Steele said. Some other manufacturers feature dual-drum rollers pairing one vibratory drum with one oscillation drum on a rig. Steele said these mixeddrum rollers do not achieve the compaction quality of Sakai ND-series machines with dual-drum vibration and oscillation system, since two oscillating drums share the compaction work on a Sakai ND-series roller. “The result is gentler, smoother mat compaction to greater theoretical maximum density compared to single oscillating drum systems,” Steele said. “We even know of at least one cont ractor whose standard operating procedure required operators to use only static compaction for first passes. Otherwise, the use of their roller’s oscillation on the first pass caused material displacement. Our SW654ND, like all our Sakai ND-rollers, allows contractors to use oscillation on all passes without increased risk of displacement.” REMANUFACTURED TORQUE CONVERTERS • • • • • Backhoes Dozers Loaders Articulated Trucks Forklifts SUPER FAST 24 HR TURNAROUND TIME Name: Company: Type of Business: Address: City: Province: Telephone: Email Address*: Postal Code: Fax: *By entering my email address, I hereby agree to receive email correspondence from Equipment Journal (Pace Publishing Limited). Australian-Demo’d. Worldwide Appeal. MacLean Engineering has introduced its latest addition to the MacLean utility vehicle fleet—the LR3 Boom Lift. The company promoted the machine at the recent Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) Expo, April 30 - May 3 in Montreal and had also introduced it to the North American market at the 2017 Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference this past March in Toronto. The genesis of the unit was in the Australian market, where high-back mines were looking for a certified elevated work platform for installing fans, instead of using a wheel loader with specifically designed buckets/baskets to allow for people to stand inside them. “That solution didn’t get them the height and weight capacities that they wanted,” says Dan Stern, Product Manager at MacLean Engineering. “So, mines would build muck piles—hills of rock—in order to reach the heights they want, which poses greater risk. You can get those height and weight capacities with a telehandler, but no telehandler is a certified manlift, and they aren’t designed for the rough terrains of underground mining.” The mines want to reach 8 metres (26 feet) (head height when working on the machine), with the power to lift 4,500 kg (10,000 pounds). The new LR3 Boom Lift meets those capabilities, is a certified manlift, and is built rugged for rough working environments. The machine features an 8-foot-by-12-foot (2.44-metreby-4.27-metre) basket, which is interchangeable (general purpose basket, fan basket) using a quick coupler. The basket can slew +/- 30 degrees and the boom can swing +/-15 degrees. The boom lift arm offers a full range of motion, and is even able to reach the ground. The machine comes equipped with an RDS (remote drive system) that allows the operator to drive and reposition the machine while at height. MacLean Engineering also showed at CIM (and PDAC in Toronto in March), the company’s contribution to the latest era of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in underground mining. With all-electric projects in Ontario like Goldcorp’s Borden project already under construction and Glencore’s Onaping Depth and Nickel Rim Deep projects in the project planning pipeline, the future is now and MacLean is deeply engaged in helping to move the needle on battery propulsion innovation in underground mining. The MacLean EV Series product line features a long cycle life, high density, high performing, data rich battery system, along with on-board charging and voltage adaptability for a seamless integration with mines’ existing power grids (575 V or 1,000 V). No additional charge station infrastructure is required. @EQUIPJOURNAL B9 MAY 29, 2017 Terex Trucks Outperform Competitors in Siberian Coal Mine A fleet of 10 Terex Trucks TR100 rigid haulers are outperforming the competition at an opencast operation in the heart of Russia’s mining industry—the Kuzbass. Submitting a bid on behalf of the Scotland-based manufacturer, Ferronordic put forward a compelling argument for the Terex Trucks’ TR100’s abilities, as well as a competitive service offering. Covering a vast area of approximately 10,000 square miles, the Kuzbass coalfield was discovered in 1721, but the first mines were established in 1907. Reaching a depth of 1,800 metres (5,905 feet), the seams of the basin conta i n a nt h racite a nd steam coals. Responsible for more than 30% of Russia’s coal production, the Kuzbass has an estimated 300 billion metric tons of reserves and is the main fuel and energy base for eastern Russia. Well suited to the adverse weather conditions of the Kuzbass, the TR100 provides the perfect balance of power, effective gearing, and optimum weight d ist r ibut ion to remove overburden efficiently. The rigid dump trucks’ hydraulic disc brakes deliver better operator cont rol, wh i le the transmission retarder decreases brake wear, reducing ow nership costs and increasing machine availability. Furthermore, the air suspension bears t he load t h roug h v a r iable-rate nitrogen-over-oil type struts, which ensure a smoother ride, reduces operator fatigue, and helps boost production. The handover involved sharing k nowledge w ith operators to guarantee that SGT receives the full benefits of the machines. Since commissioning the trucks, SGT has recorded an increase in production, and noted that the Terex Trucks machines are easy to operate and outperform other brands. In operation since June 2016, the machine is the mine’s first Hitachi excavator, and is proving to be a pivotal asset in its daily operations. “The open pit is right above underground mines, so there are many cavities we need to work around,” said Éric Lecomte, Mine Operations Director of Canadian Malartic Mine.“As a result, we operate machines remotely in those areas; it’s really a matter of health and safety. We had a smaller, diesel shovel that was operated remotely, but we wanted to improve production, so we decided to add the Hitachi machine to enhance productivity.” Though the EX5600-6 has only been in production for a short time, Lecomte and his team have been pleased with its performance so far. “The first time our oper- ators used the machine, they were very impressed with the power of the EX5600, especially compared to the older machine we had been using up until then,” said Lecomte. “We have achieved some good performance and reliability has been great. We are impressed and very satisfied.” Prior to making the decision to purchas e the EX5600-6, Lecomte and his team visited other open pit mines to see the machine in operation. “We spoke to the maintenance guys and operation guys and heard some good things,” he said. “Overall, we had some good references from our colleagues in the mining industry.” The Canadian Malartic operation was built by Osisko Mining Corp., which was jointly acquired in June 2014 by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited and Yamana Gold Corporation. Application-Specific Data & Advanced Analytics Improve Cutting in Underground Mines Joy Globa l is helpi ng mines cut cutting costs and improve cutting performance and efficiency through the company’s JoyCut program. “Global mining companies are challenged more and more today to be viable in ever more tough market conditions; they are putting more emphasis on the costs of their operations,” says Dirk van Dyk, Global Product Director, Joy Global. “This is a global t rend t hat is ev ident in most underground mining operations—not just coal, but also most other commodities, such as potash, gypsum, and salt.” Joy Cut is a n integ rated cutting system that is d e s i g ne d f or m i n i n g ’s toughest cutting challenges. Developed by Joy Global, JoyCut is designed to improve the performance of the underground mining system by improving the cutting executed by machines that use a drum for cutting, such as a continuous miner (CM) or shearer. “The cutting system is an important sub-system of the mechanized mining system [such as the CM or shearer], and it is integrated to the extent that it can impact your productivity and efficiency of the overall underground mechanized mining system,” says van Dyk. The JoyCut program has four parts: environment, application, advanced design, and JoySmart. During the first part—environment—the company examines the following factors: safety, cost, particle size, specific energy, pick life, reliability, and frictional ignition. Then Joy Global performs an on-site analysis (application), so that the company can understand the challenges, and develop an accurate problem statement. Advanced design refers to the work performed at the company’s in-house lab and the engineered solutions created there. JoySmart is when the application-specific data and advanced analy tics comes into play. Essentially, Joy Global b e n c h m a r k s a m i n e ’s current design by taking specif ic measurements, such as specif ic energ y, sump and shear rates, power consumption, etc., and then they input their solution and then remeasure. Aaron Lafferre, Global P r o d u c t M a n a g e r, Jo y Global, shares an example of how the JoyCut program benef ited one polyha lite mine. “Their problem statement was they were struggling to economically mine polyhalite; they were tearing up their drums, tearing up the machine, had a high pick consumption, and low productivity. They were grinding [instead of cutting] material, meaning small particle sizes, lots of fines and dust, and lots of waste.” Then, the company conducted four tests. “With the LCTR test, we can look at what the pick life should be, what is the best attack angle, and at parallel cuts to understand how the cracks propagate between that and the core to see what the proper pick spacing should be. We take a sample from the mine, and use different picks, pick spacing, cutting angles, and cutting widths, and measure the specific energy.” Specific energy is a direct measure of the penetration of a cutting system. Better penetration means better product sizes; larger pieces means less surface, which means less fines and dust. Joy Global identified that the polyhalite mine needed to lower the specific energy in order to improve performance. Then, Joy Global cond uc t e d J&W t e s t i n g , a Loadmaster α100 • Scale for wheeled, telescopic and tractor type loaders • 7” colour touch screen • Suitable for use with up to 10 different attachments • Optional backup camera Since 1987 1-800-363-8727 www.innotag.com cool operators can do it all day long. [email protected] proprietar y test used to measure the cuttability and wear properties of the cut material. “Schmidt Hammer testing of polyhalite compressive strength allows us to go on site and take measurements of the product in situ, draw that back, and compare it to what we are seeing in the lab, so we tie it closer to the application,” says Lafferre. And lastly, on-site application inspection. “One of t he t hings we measured is tons per pick,” says Lafferre. “In our solutions, we offered a pick that is sharper and smaller in carbide diameter, which seems cou nter i nt u it ive when you are trying to increase pick life, however, this gave better penetration. The pick shape and highgrade carbide led to 109% decrease in pick use. And, our overall solutions led to a 20% increase in productivity in sump and shear rates.” Also, the new design led to a 9% decrease in sump power and a 5% decrease in shear power, which translates into a lower specific energy. So, changing the pick not only increased pick life, but got better penetration and product size while lowering the specific energy and getting less dust and fines. T he Jo y C u t pr o g r a m can be used on Joy Global branded machines as well as competitive machines, and the program has already been put to use in mines in Canada, US, South Africa, and Australia. Leaders throughout the m i n i ng i ndust r y representing a dozen mining companies joined Artisan to discuss not only the 153, but also what conversion to battery powered vehicles means to the underground mining industry. “We all know the impact that this technology is having on the industry and we need to get smart about it quickly. Artisan is known as the leader, and we are here to see their new machine and to ask questions about the implementation of battery technology at our mine site” said Dick DeStefano, Director of SAMSSA. In addit ion to mining executives and government representatives (including Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger), the latest buyer of two 153’s was also present. “We at KL Gold are proud of our leadership in the transformation to battery power and our long standing strategic partnership with Artisan” said John Labine, Kirkland Lake Gold’s Procurement Manager. “153 testing is showing strong results and we are anxious to get our units into full time production use to prove their value over diesel in our Macassa operation.” The event was held in Sudbury at Science North. A fitting location for a discussion about innovation. “Sudbury is well-known for leading-edge technology, innovation, and creativity throughout the world,” said Artisan’s Mike Mayhew. “We are proud of our new machine and honoured to introduce it to so many respected and experienced mining professionals.” In addition to Mike Mayhew, Mike Kasaba (Artisan’s CEO) and Brian Huff (CTO) were in attendance and talked about the company’s vision and its approach to the market. “My goal this evening is to listen” said Mike Kasaba. “The collect- ive experience in this room tonight is overwhelming and priceless. We can learn so much about how to improve mining operations from this amazing group of people. I can’t wait to incorporate many of their ideas into our current and future products.” Artisan has designed the 153 around its cutting-edge electric powertrain, battery, and advanced operator control system. The 153, with its streamlined modernized design, is smaller in all di- mensions than a comparable diesel loader, but has 300% of the power. It loads quicker, hauls up steep grades faster, and is more precise and responsive to operator commands, claims the company. 416-801-6014 www.LundAppraisals.ca [email protected] CPPAG Accredited - USPAP Compliant 2016/17 “...power is always there when you need it.” Bobcat of Toronto Carlos Burgos, owner of Carval Contracting Inc., takes a minute out of building a customers dream backyard to take a picture with Bobcat Sales Specialist Gino Cervo from Bobcat of Toronto. Carlos Burgos said the #1 reason why he chose to purchase Bobcat® machines was the service Bobcat of Toronto provided. When he first started looking, he walked into another brand dealership, they didn’t give them the time of day because he was young. From the minute he walked into Bobcat of Toronto dealership, they were all very welcoming to him and Gino Cervo, Bobcat Sales Specialist, continues to provide Carlos with top notch service. “Gino Cervo explained what machines would work best for my business so bought a Bobcat MT85 mini loader, T650 compact track loader and a E85 compact excavator. I am so glad I did purchase these machines. They are compact, have great response and power is always there when you need it. My employees find them easy to operate and everything is straight forward on the dash. As for the cost of machines, it’s money well spent. Actually, I am just in the middle of purchasing a bigger machine from Gino,” stated Carlos. “I would highly recommend Gino Cervo, Bobcat of Toronto and Bobcat machines and attachments to anyone.” Thanks Carlos. 0% APR for up to 48 months* OR In lieu of financing rebates up to $5,200* CAD on a new Bobcat compact excavator from participating dealers in Canada. *Offer ends June 30, 2017.
