Consumer Products Application Seal and Bushing on Battery Problem A battery manufacturer was experiencing quality control issues due to inconsistent placement of bushings and seals around the contact points on its product. Missing bushings or seals would cause premature product failure from fluid ingress or rapid wear of the center contact point. Standard photoelectric sensors could not reliably check for the presence of these small parts due to variations in battery position at inspection. This required inspection fixturing, which reduced line output. Solution ® Typical Hardware for This Application • Checker 202 – CKR-202-002 • Mounting bracket – CKR-200-BKT • I/O Box – CKR-200-IOBOX-002 • SensorView 350 – SV-350-000 Reference Information • Checker Reference Guide • Checker Solutions Brochure • Checker Product Guide A Checker vision sensor was installed. Checker’s part finding sensor identifies a reference feature on each battery. The reference feature is used to locate points where the seal and bushing should be visible. Checker then uses a pattern sensor to compare one point to a stored reference image of a bushing and a brightness sensor to check for presence of the white seal. Use of the part finding sensor to locate the inspection points gives consistent and reliable readings even if battery position varies. Checker’s internal logic differentiates between missing bushings and seals, enabling tighter process control. Results Return rates were reduced by reliable in-factory identification of missing parts. Higher line speeds were attained through elimination of inspection fixturing and because Checker’s part finding sensor does not need separate external triggering that would require additional time per inspection. Output 0 verifies that Checker located the battery, this output could be used as a trigger. Outputs 1 & 2 are used to determine which failure occurred. Lens: 5.8mm standard lens supplied with Checker Output 3 is used for pass/fail results. Lighting: Internal lighting from Checker – no need SensorView allows users to view jobs and images without a PC. for external lighting in this application
