“Great Plains started to successfully export its products overseas over 30 years ago. With these many years of exporting agricultural implements, Great Plains International is actually writing the book on how an American implement company can compete in the world market.” Daniel Rauchholz - President of Great Plains International
Over the years, Great Plains has exported products to over 50 different countries around the world

International Philosophy Our international objective is to always be in contention for a sale in a specific product field. We accomplish this by learning what the regional farming practices are, and then offering agronomic solutions to meet the differing needs of farmers in the area.

This emphasis on farmer needs has put our products in a strong position and helped us achieve significant growth. The initial result of this strategy is a strong market presence in over 30 countries, and the establishment of regional offices in several key markets. The 2010 acquisition of Simba International in central England was a natural progression of this strategy and it strengthens Great Plains product offerings in multiple agricultural regions around the world!

PRIVATE FAMILY OWNERSHIP
gives Great Plains a very solid foundation and the independence that many public companies can only dream about. Ownership Philosophy 1. We keep the earnings of the company in the company, so we can grow and not become highly leveraged. 2. We have grown over the years – primarily through internal new product development. 3. We are not a company that changes ownership every few years. Our founder and owner still manages the company. 4. We most often develop our managers from within; they know and understand our industry and our customers. 5. We treat our employees fairly and with respect, resulting in low turnover and a well-trained, motivated work force.
“The balance between our two primary manufacturing divisions has kept our company strong through many business cycles.” Linda Salem - President, Great Plains Mfg., Inc.

History
COMPANY FOUNDER ROY APPLEQUIST, HIS FAMILY AND BUSINESS THROUGH THE YEARS
Lots of plowing was done in the past in Kansas. Today, No-Till and Conservation Tillage farming are the norm. Great Plains has been a leader in this evolution.
Roy’s grandfather, Martin Applequist, farmed and later delivered Skelly Gas & Oil to local farmers in the Assaria community.
Roy’s grandfather, Pete Ahlstedt, operated an early day steam wheat thrashing machine in the Assaria and Smolan farming communities.
All four of Roy’s great-grandfathers’ families were the first to break the prairie on their Central Kansas homesteads. In the early 1870s, there were still Indians occasionally in the area. Bob Hlad (Great Plains’ first employee), Roy, and Roy’s oldest daughter Penny, with the first Great Plains Grain Drill in 1976.
Great Plains’ first product: a 30' Folding Grain Drill on the way to its first field test in the Fall of 1976.
Great Plains Plant from 1976 through 1979
ROY’S BACKGROUND • Born and raised in Salina, KS • Worked in his father’s business, Roberts Industries, while growing up The old Assaria High School Building, built in 1919, was the company headquarters from 1979 to 1995.
• Graduated from North Park University in Chicago, IL, in 1968 • Managed Salina Foundry Division of Roberts from 1968-1974 • Served in the US Army Reserves from 1968-1974 • Married Donice in 1972 and has 3 children • Founded Great Plains Mfg. on April 1, 1976
