USER MANUAL
Welcome to CovePDF Introduction CovePDF is a fast, lightweight and secure reader for .pdf files. With its minimalistic design, it enables every action to be performed in an easy, effective and clear way. Besides reading a document's content you can protect it by setting a password for opening documents or setting a password to restrict certain features. The first version of CovePDF closely matches the capabilities of other readers available on the market. In some areas, such as document security, Cove PDF outperformed its competitors by providing a completely new set of features for protecting the content and limiting application features. It also provides a very close look & feel/implementation of the features in Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader and requires no additional training for those users who worked with the aforementioned readers. If you would like to read about the features that are implemented in the first version of CovePDF, see section ‘What’s New in CovePDF’ in this manual.

USER MANUAL Annotations Introduction Annotations are objects, such as comments, text boxes, etc., that are inserted in specific locations of the document’s page. Annotations can be considered as a way of communication between the creator of the document and the readers that have some remarks regarding the document’s content. Every annotation that is inserted in the document is presented with an icon in the document pane and the content of the annotation is presented in the Comments Pane. By default, this pane is collapsed, but with every click on any annotation, the pane is expanded automatically. Navigation through the document and the notations is synchronized, which means that with every click an annotation from the Comment Pane, CovePDF will take you to the page where this particular annotation is inserted. There are nine annotations implemented in CovePDF:
Comment Highlight Texts Strikethrough Text Underline Text Squiggly Underline Text Text Text Box Ink Highlight Link
The comment, text box, text, ink highlight and link annotations can be inserted from the toolbar, presented in the image below.
While the other annotations can be inserted when a particular part of the text is selected and then the right mouse button is clicked.

Sorting Annotations There are four criteria for sorting annotation in CovePDF:
By Page By Author By Date By Type
Default sort criteria is by page, but you can arrange the items in the Comment Pane as it is most appropriate for your work.
Search through Annotations Sometimes it can be very difficult to find a thought, phrase or comment in documents that contain lots and lots of comments, replies, etc. That is why we have implemented a Search in the Comment Pane in order for users to find the text they want to. How does it work? Very simply. Just type the phrase or word in the Search label.

USER MANUAL Sign a PDF file Digital signature A digital signature acts as a traditional handwritten signature that can be used to authenticate the identity of a user as well as the document content. It stores information about the signer along with the date, time, and state of the document when it was signed. When you are signing a document with a digital signature, this signature represents the Digital ID of the person signing the document at a given time. The digital ID is the identity of a person/organization, which contains your name, e-mail address, a serial number, an expiration date, and the name of the company. A digital ID consists of two keys; one is a public key (certificate) that is used to encrypt or lock data, and the other is a private key that is used to decrypt or unlock data that is encrypted. You can also distribute the certificate that contains the public key and other identifying information to those people who need to use it to verify your identity, validate your signature, or encrypt a document for you. The content of the document that was encrypted using your certificate can be unlocked only by your private key. For that sole reason, you should store your digital ID in a safe place. You can not only obtain a digital ID from a trusted third-party provider called a Certificate Authority (CA), but you can also create a new certificate by specifying necessary information, using one of the key algorithms RSA 1024 or RSA 2048.
Create a signature Before you sign a document, you need to draw a signature field where the signature is placed, get a digital ID, and create the signature. To create a signature, do the following steps: 1. Click the Sign button in the left Toolbar Pane. 2. Once the Sign pane opens up, click on the Create Signature + option. 3. Drag a rectangular shape to a place in the document, where you want your signature to be positioned. The following dialog box opens up where you can specify several signature settings:
20
USER MANUAL
Sign As – Choose the certificate with which you are going to sign the document; Reason for signing the document; Location; Lock the document after signing; Leave additional contact info (which is optional). After you specify the necessary information, click on the Confirm button. Save the PDF file so your signature can be saved.
If you cannot obtain a certificate from a third-party CA, you can create a new certificate within CovePDF. Create new certificate To create an entirely new certificate, follow these steps: 1. Click on the Sign button in the left Toolbar. 2. Go to the Create Signature option. 3. Draw a rectangular shape to the position in the page where you want the signature to be displayed. 4. From the Choose Certificate dialog, click on the Create new certificate option. 5. A new dialog opens up, where you set the information for the new certificate, such as: Name, E-mail, Organizational Unit, Organization Name, Country and which key algorithm shall be used (RSA 1024/RSA 2048).
21
USER MANUAL
6. To finish the process, click on the Create button.

Signed by – who signed the document. Date and Time when the document was signed. Verification details for the specific signature. Show the certificate option – a link used to open and view more details regarding the certificate in question.
Verify signatures CovePDF allows you to verify signatures automatically when you open the PDF document. In order for this option to be used, you would have to check the option ‘Verify signatures when document is opened’ available in Edit - > Preferences -> Signatures tab. You can verify a signature, by clicking on the Verify option under each signature, presented in the Sign Pane. If a signature has been verified and the signature is valid, a green check mark icon will be shown. Click on the Details option, to view detailed verification information.
22
